An Approach to Pilgrimage as Crucible for Leadership Formation

The Global Immersion Project targets faith leaders who are disoriented by a Christianity that justifies actions, nonactions, and political positions informed by greed, racism, and violence. Endorsements of injustice and demands for partisan allegiance by prominent Christian leaders cause many to become suspicious of their inherited religion. This often ignites a search for a faith that generates a restorative ethic. Within our immersive trainings, they encounter the values that have shaped their inherited religion and are awakened to their contrast to the values of Jesus. By training’s conclusion, many stand, on the precipice of a perilous pilgrimage, asking, “Where do I go from here?” While many embark upon the pilgrimage, we have observed that few navigate it transformatively. This project seeks to answer one question: What do these leaders need to navigate the pilgrimage through disorientation transformatively? The result of this research is a program called Beyond the Precipice. This eight-month cohort prepares disoriented faith leaders to navigate the pilgrimage from fidelity to Imperial Christianity to participation in God’s restoration. Beyond the Precipice is not the actual pilgrimage nor is it intended to be prescriptive of the journey ahead. Rather, it is an orientation to the pilgrimage. As a result of the program, participants will understand six key factors: (1) the transformational power of pilgrimage; (2) the evolution, values, and some manifestations of Imperial Christianity; (3) the values of Jesus that shape a restorative ethic; (4) the three factors that cause premature abandonment from the pilgrimage; (5) the four elements for support necessary to remain in the pilgrimage; and (6) the four practices for navigating pilgrimage as a way of life

In Human, All-Too-Human, Nietzsche initiates an unexpected criticism of art, specifically a criticism of its ability to help humans justify life in a world full of suffering. Nietzsche sets his sights on absolute music, music that perpetuates religious values inherited from Christianity and renders the modern listener unable to affirm life. Drawing from various sources in nineteenth-century Germany, including his former friend Richard Wagner, Nietzsche demonstrates that rather than relying on absolute music to help us come to terms with suffering, we must abandon it in order to overcome the life-negating values it perpetuates

Fantastic Extrapolations: An Exploratory Bibliometric Investigation into the Historic Development of English-Language Fantasy and Science Fiction Scholarship Through Fifty Years of Extrapolation

There are relatively few bibliometric or citation analysis historical studies of the scholarly literature of arts or humanities fields as compared with the science, technical, medical, or social science disciplines; many studies focus on the journal literature and use the formal works cited reference lists as captured by citation indexes as the basis for their conclusions. This study looks at aspects of the scholarship of the literary and media-based popular culture field of fantasy and science fiction (F&SF; aka: fantastic, fantastika) studies through the first 50 years of Extrapolation (December 1959-Fall 2009), the oldest continuing scholarly journal in the field, in three areas: -- History and editorial purpose, types of contributions, and recognition by general-, literature-, and F&SF-focused indexing services; -- Analyses of the 785 scholars published in the journal, by gender, co-authorship, affiliation and status (geographical, institutional, ranks, disciplines, awards), their referencing practices, and identification of the 55 most frequently published scholars; and, -- Analyses of more than 15,000 references given to 2,035 primary (creative) authors and more than 8,000 individual creative works, including collaboratively authored media, religious, and other titles, by gender and national affiliation, and by types of works. publication sources, language, and ages/dates, as found in 937 articles by 656 different authors. The primary references analyzed come not only from the traditional bibliometric locations in Works Cited lists, but also from Notes, and the references found in the rarely if ever studied informal locations (implicit citations), primarily within the text of the articles. The most frequently referenced primary authors and works are identified: 118 authors (20-563 references), beginning with Ursula K. Le Guin (563 references; 105 different works), Robert A. Heinlein (519; 90), and H. G. Wells (328; 52); 182 primary (creative) works (10-191 references), starting with Star Trek: The Original Series (191 references), Star Trek: The Next Generation (106), George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four (77), Wells’ The Time Machine (73), and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (71). This study should interest historians of arts and humanities scholarship, F&SF scholars, and librarians and archivists responsible for collection development and collections management in the areas of literature and media

An experimental study of the validity of the heat-field concept for sonic-boom alleviation

An experimental program was carried out in the NASA-Langley 4 ft x 4 ft supersonic pressure tunnel to investigate the validity of the heat-field concept for sonic boom alleviation. The concept involves heating the flow about a supersonic aircraft in such a manner as to obtain an increase in effective aircraft length and yield an effective aircraft shape that will result in a shock-free pressure signature on the ground. First, a basic body-of-revolution representing an SST configuration with its lift equivalence in volume was tested to provide a baseline pressure signature. Second, a model having a 5/2-power area distribution which, according to theory, should yield a linear pressure rise with no front shock wave was tested. Third, the concept of providing the 5/2-power area distribution by using an off-axis slender fin below the basic body was investigated. Then a substantial portion (approximately 40 percent) of the solid fin was replaced by a heat field generated by passing heated nitrogen through the rear of the fin

Resilient Transportation Systems in a Post-Disaster Environment: A Case Study of Opportunities Realized and Missed in the Greater New Orleans Region, 2010

Based upon our research in Post-Katrina New Orleans, we define transportation resiliency as a system’s ability to function before, during and after major disruptions through reliance upon multiple mobility options. The importance of a resilient transportation system becomes more apparent during disasters where multiple options for mobility are necessary for both passenger and goods movement due to the potential loss of one or more modes. Post-Katrina New Orleans offers a unique opportunity to investigate pre-disaster planning and post-disaster recovery activities in a major metropolitan city where all modes of transportation were either severely damaged or completely destroyed. In response to Hurricane Katrina, the costliest disaster in U.S. history, new policies and programs have been adopted in New Orleans, in Louisiana, and at the federal level for disaster preparedness and post-disaster recovery. This paper addresses how transportation systems and policies in New Orleans have evolved in the wake of Hurricane Katrina (2005) to achieve a greater degree of resiliency and ultimately better serve the mobility needs of the community in future disaster situations

Small-Scale Distribution of the Sand Dollars Mellita tenuis and Encope michelini (Clypeasteroida, Echinodermata) off the Central Florida Gulf Coast

Small-scale distributions of Encope michelini were quantified 27 km west of Captiva Island at 20 m depth and of Mellita tenuis 7 km west of Egmont Key at 6.5 m depth and at Mullet Key at 1.5 m depth during 2005. Encope michelini were aggregated in 33.3% of three plots in March. Off Egmont Key, M. tenuis were aggregated in 100% of four plots in March but in none of three plots in Sept. At Mullet Key, M. tenuis were aggregated in 37.5% of 16 plots in May, 12.5% of 16 plots in July, and 50.0% of 16 plots in Sept. Percentage of organic content was not correlated with sand dollar distribution, except for M. tenuis off Egmont Key. The distribution pattern of both species is dynamic. The pattern at Mullet Key changed within 2 to 5 hr after initial observations in two of eight plots in May and July and in five of eight plots in Sept. It is possible that aggregation is influenced by local, short-term concentration of food below the sensitivity of measurement of organic content and that dispersal to random distribution may occur when food concentration is decreased

Generalized Advanced Propeller Analysis System (GAPAS). Volume 2: Computer program user manual

The Generalized Advanced Propeller Analysis System (GAPAS) computer code is described. GAPAS was developed to analyze advanced technology multi-bladed propellers which operate on aircraft with speeds up to Mach 0.8 and altitudes up to 40,000 feet. GAPAS includes technology for analyzing aerodynamic, structural, and acoustic performance of propellers. The computer code was developed for the CDC 7600 computer and is currently available for industrial use on the NASA Langley computer. A description of all the analytical models incorporated in GAPAS is included. Sample calculations are also described as well as users requirements for modifying the analysis system. Computer system core requirements and running times are also discussed
