    Who bullies whom at a garden feeder? Interspecific agonistic interactions of small passerines during a cold winter

    Interspecific agonistic interactions are important selective factors for maintaining ecological niches of different species, but their outcome is difficult to predict a priori. Here, we examined the direction and intensity of interspecific interactions in an assemblage of small passerines at a garden feeder, focussing on three finch species of various body sizes. We found that large and mediumsized birds usually initiated and won agonistic interactions with smaller species. Also, the frequency of fights increased with decreasing differences in body size between the participants. Finally, the probability of engaging in a fight increased with the number of birds at the feeder

    Development and Vehicle Integration of XWD Driveline Technology

    The continuously ongoing development of new driveline hardware, improved vehicle state sensing capabilities and sophisticated vehicle dynamics control algorithms are strong enablers for improvements in both safety and functional performance of road vehicles. The present paper describes one of the latest achievements in this area, namely the development and vehicle integration of a state of the art all-wheel-drive driveline, named XWD or cross-wheel-drive, in the Saab 9-3.This all-wheel-drive driveline concerns an active on demand driven rear-axle, coupled to the front by means of an electronically controlled hydraulic clutch to distribute a variable amount of torque from front to rear. In addition to this front to rear distribution, the system is capable of transferring torque laterally across the rear-axle as well using an electronic Limited Slip Differential. In the next section of this paper, a complete system overview will be provided, detailing each and every component and explain both their mutual and external interfaces. Once having presented all key characteristics, the paper will further expand on how these characteristics determine system behaviour on a vehicle level, i.e. especially on vehicle dynamics properties like traction and handling performance. Furthermore, the paper will present specific development implications related to the integration in the Saab 9-3, i.e. how on one hand the vehicle architecture needs to be changed in order to incorporate the described system, and how on the other hand, the system itself is tailored to excel in this particular vehicle

    Knowledge, Fear, and Conscience: Reasons to Stop Flying Because of Climate Change

    Much research on the societal consequences of climate change has focused on inaction, seeking to explain why societies and individuals do not change according to experts’ recommendations. In this qualitative study, we instead consider people who have changed their behaviour for the sake of the climate: They have stopped travelling by air. We first asked them to elaborate their rationales for the behaviour change. Then, using topos theory to find thought structures, we analysed their 673 open-text answers. Several themes emerged, which together can be regarded as a process of change. Increased knowledge, primarily narrated as a process by which latent knowledge was transformed into insight, through experience or emotional distress, was important. Contrary to certain claims in the literature, fear stimulated change of behaviour for many in this group. Climate change was framed as a moral issue, requiring acts of conscience. Children were invoked as educators and moral guides. Role models and a supportive social context played an important part. Alternatives to flying were brought forward as a motive to refrain from flying. Only a few mentioned shame as momentous. Instead, stopping travelling by air invoked a feeling of agency and responsibility, and could also result in a positive sensation

    The Amelioration of Olfactory Acuity upon Sexual Maturation Might Affect Food Preferences

    Upon sexual maturation, olfactory acuity in women ameliorates and starts oscillating across the cycle. During ovulation, mean olfactory threshold is 30 times lower than during bleeding. Interestingly, menstruated women undergo maleodorant trimethylaminuria. We argued that olfactory amelioration during ovulation might concur to a mating strategy, whereas olfactory impairment during bleeding might protect women against self-refusal. Testosterone and its 17β-estradiol derivative might be responsible for the synchronization of these menstrual events. Furthermore, we posed the question whether olfactory detection amelioration upon sexual maturation might provoke a change in food preferences, for instance a reduction in fish consumption. A preliminary survey in Italy provided encouraging results: 15-44 year-old women have lower fish consumption than 3-14 year-old girls. Surprisingly, men exhibited the same behaviour, so new olfactory tests as well as testosterone measurements are under way

    Methanotrophy, Methylotrophy, the Human Body and Disease

    Methylotrophic Bacteria use one-carbon (C1) compounds as their carbon source. They have been known to be associated to the human body for almost 20 years as part of the normal flora and were identified as pathogens in the early 1990s in end-stage HIV patients and chemotherapy patients. In this chapter, I look at C1 compounds in the human body and exposure from the environment and then consider Methylobacterium spp. and Methylorubrum spp. in terms of infections, its role in breast and bowel cancers; Methylococcus capsulatus and its role in inflammatory bowel disease, and Brevibacterium casei and Hyphomicrobium sulfonivorans as part of the normal human flora. I also consider the abundance of methylotrophs from the Actinobacteria being identified in human studies and the potential bias of the ionic strength of culture media and the needs for future work. Within the scope of future work, I consider the need for the urgent assessment of the pathogenic, oncogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic potential of Methylobacterium spp. and Methylorubrum spp. and the need to handle them at higher containment levels until more data are available

    Trimethylamine and Trimethylamine N-Oxide, a Flavin-Containing Monooxygenase 3 (FMO3)-Mediated Host-Microbiome Metabolic Axis Implicated in Health and Disease

    Flavin-containing monooxygenase 3 (FMO3) is known primarily as an enzyme involved in the metabolism of therapeutic drugs. However, on a daily basis we are exposed to one of the most abundant substrates of the enzyme, trimethylamine, which is released from various dietary components by the action of gut bacteria. FMO3 converts the odorous trimethylamine to non-odorous trimethylamine N-oxide, which is excreted in urine. Impaired FMO3 activity gives rise to the inherited disorder primary trimethylaminuria. Affected individuals cannot produce trimethylamine N-oxide and, consequently, excrete large amounts of trimethylamine. A dysbiosis in gut bacteria can give rise to secondary trimethylaminuria. Recently, there has been much interest in FMO3 and its catalytic product trimethylamine N-oxide. This is because trimethylamine N-oxide has been implicated in various conditions affecting health, including cardiovascular disease, reverse cholesterol transport and glucose and lipid homeostasis. In this review, we consider the dietary components that can give rise to trimethylamine, the gut bacteria involved in the production of trimethylamine from dietary precursors, the metabolic reactions by which bacteria produce and utilize trimethylamine and the enzymes that catalyze the reactions. Also included is information on bacteria that produce trimethylamine in the oral cavity and vagina, two key microbiome niches that can influence health. Finally, we discuss the importance of the trimethylamine/trimethylamine N-oxide microbiome-host axis in health and disease, considering factors that affect bacterial production and host metabolism of trimethylamine, the involvement of trimethylamine N-oxide and FMO3 in disease and the implications of the host-microbiome axis for management of trimethylaminuria

    The goal of the project was to handle conflicts in teacher training between teaching styles and expectations of students with a technical background. A clash between different ways of looking at knowledge manifested in different ways of speaking e.g. by using different metaphors and value words. We wanted to use rhetorical theory to articulate these differences. But we soon discovered other tensions: between the trainers and the theories and between the theories and the curriculum. On a general level, these tensions were seen by the students as a mismatch of theory and practice. We consider this a structural problem not easily removed, but believe that a topical didactic approach can contribute to deal with it in a constructive way
