    Paul Celan\u27s Linguistic Mysticism

    Get PDF
Paul Celan\u27s works often seem to grant to language an autonomy that isolates poetic from extra-poetic concerns, including religious ones. The status of language in Celan, however, should be assessed in the context of its status within Judaic mysticism. While the importance of mysticism for Celan has been recognized, the degree to which Judaic mysticism differs from other mystical traditions has been less so. This is especially true with regard to the place given to language in the Kabbalah, and the structures and assumptions that its conception of language implies. Of importance to Celan, for example, is the Kabbalistic notion that language is the very substance constituting creation. By examining such Judaic mystical motifs in several Celan poems, this essay attempts to show that Celan\u27s preoccupation with language does not entail a withdrawal into a self-enclosed linguistic world, and that ultimately his religious concerns are intimately involved with his aesthetic ones

AbstractIn this article we shall provide an overview of the theory and methodology of Reinhart Koselleck’s conceptual history, basis of the well-known dictionary Geschichtliche Grundbegriffe this author wrote with Otto Brunner and Werner Conze. Using texts from German and English language never translated into Spanish, we emphasize topics such as the idea of the polysemic nature of concepts, the notion of a “state of things”, the idea of conceptual history understood as a critique of historical sources and as a redefinition of the notion of anachronism, and the distinction between current and past history. In the last section, it is addressed the pivotal topic of the notions space of experience and horizon of expectations.Key WordsKoselleck, Conceptual history, space of experience, horizon of expectations

Eckhart, Derrida, and The Gift of Love

    Get PDF
This paper argues that Jacques Derrida and Meister Eckhart both construe love as a gift that is entirely free of economic exchange, and both conclude on this basis that love cannot be grasped or identified. In my reading, Eckhart and Derrida do not rule out consideration of one’s own well-being, but their accounts do entail that calculated self-protection is external to love. For this reason, they suggest, lovers should not expect to balance love against a prudential restraint: although both demands are indelible, they function at different levels. A gift of this sort is ineluctably dangerous, but Derrida and Eckhart suggest that unsettling darkness must be endured in order to preserve the possibility of love

Burnt and Blossoming: Material Mysticism in Trilogy and Four Quartets

    Get PDF
This paper brings two WWII poems into dialogue: H.D.'s Trilogy and Eliot's Four Quartets. Both poems express a creative response to the destruction of war. My reading of Trilogy suggests a material mysticism in which vision and renewal are situated within the natural world, rituals and bodily experience. Bringing this understanding of mysticism to bear on Four Quartets reveals tension between transcendence and materiality. For Eliot, redemption comes through time and location, while for H.D., redemption lies within material particularity. Four Quartets oscillates between an apophatic discourse that seeks to transcend desire and history and an emphasis on material particularities

Abstract This article explores Alexander von Humboldt’s reception of Christopher Columbus as a historical figure, mainly in his Relation historique and in his Examen critique. First of all, it explores what Humboldt’s biographers have referred to as a “zweiter Kolumbus” (a second Columbus). It then proceeds to trace the history of a “poetic imagination” and a “mythical geography” attributed by Humboldt to Christopher Columbus.
