    Ziele und Möglichkeiten der Züchtung nährstoffeffizienter Nutzpflanzen

    Zum Thema "Nährstoffeffizienz" liegt ein weites Spektrum wissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen der verschiedensten Fachgebiete vor. In diesem Beitrag wurden die vorhandenen Untersuchungsergebnisse anhand von zwei Formen der Charakterisierung nährstoffeffizienter Sorten strukturiert. Einerseits wird mit dem deskriptiven Ansatz eine Beurteilung der Ertragsleistungen einer Sorte in verschiedenen Nährstoff-Umwelten in den Vordergrund gestellt. Hieraus ist eine direkte Selektion unter Freilandbedingungen abzuleiten. Andererseits wurde eine analytische Charakterisierung formuliert, aus der eine indirekte Selektion von nährstoffeffizienten Eigenschaften als sekundäre Merkmale zu entwickeln ist. Die Vielzahl möglicher morphologischer, anatomischer und physiologischer Eigenschaften wurde in die Bereiche Aneignungs- und Verwertungseffizienz untergliedert. Eine Definition der Begriffe Low-Input Sorte, Nährstoff-, Verwertungs- und Aneignungseffizienz wurde einführend vorgenommen. Rechtliche und biologische Grenzen wurden anhand des Wertprüfungssystems und der genetischen Diversität aufgezeigt

    AUTOMATIC GENERATION OF EVENT-RELATED CHECKLISTS

    Virtual assistants provide notifications and reminders of upcoming calendar events to users. This disclosure describes the automatic generation of a checklist associated with an upcoming event that is provided to a user. The checklist includes items associated with the event to be carried to the event by the user. The checklist can also include tasks to be performed by the user prior to the event. A machine learned model that is trained to associate event types with items/tasks is utilized to generate the checklist. If the user permits, items mentioned in event related user communications are also included in the checklist. Generated checklists can be shared with other participants. With user permission and express consent, the checklists can be personalized for subsequent use based on user interaction with the checklists

    Organic small molecule field-effect transistors with Cytop(TM) gate dielectric: eliminating gate bias stress effects

    We report on organic field-effect transistors with unprecedented resistance against gate bias stress. The single crystal and thin-film transistors employ the organic gate dielectric Cytop(TM). This fluoropolymer is highly water repellent and shows a remarkable electrical breakdown strength. The single crystal transistors are consistently of very high electrical quality: near zero onset, very steep subthreshold swing (average: 1.3 nF V/(dec cm2)) and negligible current hysteresis. Furthermore, extended gate bias stress only leads to marginal changes in the transfer characteristics. It appears that there is no conceptual limitation for the stability of organic semiconductors in contrast to hydrogenated amorphous silicon.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Appl. Phys.     Multiple pathways of plasmid DNA transfer in Helicobacter pylori

    Many Helicobacter pylori (Hp) strains carry cryptic plasmids of different size and gene content, the function of which is not well understood. A subgroup of these plasmids (e.g. pHel4, pHel12), contain a mobilisation region, but no cognate type IV secretion system (T4SS) for conjugative transfer. Instead, certain H. pylori strains (e.g. strain P12 carrying plasmid pHel12) can harbour up to four T4SSs in their genome (cag-T4SS, comB, tfs3, tfs4). Here, we show that such indigenous plasmids can be efficiently transferred between H. pylori strains, even in the presence of extracellular DNaseI eliminating natural transformation. Knockout of a plasmid-encoded mobA relaxase gene significantly reduced plasmid DNA transfer in the presence of DNaseI, suggesting a DNA conjugation or mobilisation process. To identify the T4SS involved in this conjugative DNA transfer, each individual T4SS was consecutively deleted from the bacterial chromosome. Using a marker-free counterselectable gene deletion procedure (rpsL counterselection method), a P12 mutant strain was finally obtained with no single T4SS (P12ΔT4SS). Mating experiments using these mutants identified the comB T4SS in the recipient strain as the major mediator of plasmid DNA transfer between H. pylori strains, both in a DNaseI-sensitive (natural transformation) as well as a DNaseI-resistant manner (conjugative transfer). However, transfer of a pHel12::cat plasmid from a P12ΔT4SS donor strain into a P12ΔT4SS recipient strain provided evidence for the existence of a third, T4SS-independent mechanism of DNA transfer. This novel type of plasmid DNA transfer, designated as alternate DNaseI-Resistant (ADR) mechanism, is observed at a rather low frequency under in vitro conditions. Taken together, our study describes for the first time the existence of three distinct pathways of plasmid DNA transfer between H. pylori underscoring the importance of horizontal gene transfer for this species

    Contacting individual Fe(110) dots in a single electron-beam lithography step

    We report on a new approach, entirely based on electron-beam lithography technique, to contact electrically, in a four-probe scheme, single nanostructures obtained by self-assembly. In our procedure, nanostructures of interest are localised and contacted in the same fabrication step. This technique has been developed to study the field-induced reversal of an internal component of an asymmetric Bloch domain wall observed in elongated structures such as Fe(110) dots. We have focused on the control, using an external magnetic field, of the magnetisation orientation within N\'eel caps that terminate the domain wall at both interfaces. Preliminary magneto-transport measurements are discussed demonstrating that single Fe(110) dots have been contacted.Comment: 5 page

    Non-uniformity issues and workarounds in bounded-size sampling

    A variety of schemes have been proposed in the literature to speed up query processing and analytics by incrementally maintaining a bounded-size uniform sample from a dataset in the presence of a sequence of insertion, deletion, and update transactions. These algorithms vary according to whether the dataset is an ordinary set or a multiset and whether the transaction sequence consists only of insertions or can include deletions and updates. We report on subtle non-uniformity issues that we found in a number of these prior bounded-size sampling schemes, including some of our own. We provide workarounds that can avoid the non-uniformity problem; these workarounds are easy to implement and incur negligible additional cost. We also consider the impact of non-uniformity in practice and describe simple statistical tests that can help detect non-uniformity in new algorithms

    Linking sea ice deformation to ice thickness redistribution using high-resolution satellite and airborne observations

    An unusual, large, latent-heat polynya opened and then closed by freezing and convergence north of Greenland's coast in late winter 2018. The closing presented a natural but well-constrained full-scale ice deformation experiment. We observed the closing of and deformation within the polynya with satellite synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) imagery and measured the accumulated effects of dynamic and thermodynamic ice growth with an airborne electromagnetic (AEM) ice thickness survey 1 month after the closing began. During that time, strong ice convergence decreased the area of the refrozen polynya by a factor of 2.5. The AEM survey showed mean and modal thicknesses of the 1-month-old ice of 1.96 ± 1.5 m and 1.1 m, respectively. We show that this is in close agreement with modeled thermodynamic growth and with the dynamic thickening expected from the polynya area decrease during that time. We found significant differences in the shapes of ice thickness distributions (ITDs) in different regions of the refrozen polynya. These closely corresponded to different deformation histories of the surveyed ice that we reconstructed from Lagrangian ice drift trajectories in reverse chronological order. We constructed the ice drift trajectories from regularly gridded, high-resolution drift fields calculated from SAR imagery and extracted deformation derived from the drift fields along the trajectories. Results show a linear proportionality between convergence and thickness change that agrees well with the ice thickness redistribution theory. We found a proportionality between the e folding of the ITDs' tails and the total deformation experienced by the ice. Lastly, we developed a simple, volume-conserving model to derive dynamic ice thickness change from the combination of Lagrangian trajectories and high-resolution SAR drift and deformation fields. The model has a spatial resolution of 1.4 km and reconstructs thickness profiles in reasonable agreement with the AEM observations. The modeled ITD resembles the main characteristics of the observed ITD, including mode, e folding, and full width at half maximum. Thus, we demonstrate that high-resolution SAR deformation observations are capable of producing realistic ice thickness distributions
