    The pyrolytic-plasma method and the device for the utilization of hazardous waste containing organic compounds

    This paper is focused on the new method of waste processing. The waste, including hazardous waste, contain organic compounds. The method consists in two main processes: the pyrolysis of waste and the oxidation of the pyrolytic gas with a use of non-equilibrium plasma. The practical implementation of the method requires the design, construction and testing of the new device in large laboratory scale. The experiments were carried out for the two kinds of waste: polyethylene as a model waste and the electronic waste as a real waste. The process of polyethylene decomposition showed that the operation of the device is correct because 99.74% of carbon moles contained in the PE samples was detected in the gas after the process. Thus, the PE samples practically were pyrolyzed completely to hydrocarbons, which were completely oxidized in the plasma reactor. It turned out that the device is useful for decomposition of the electronic waste. The conditions in the plasma reactor during the oxidation process of the pyrolysis products did not promote the formation of PCDD/Fs despite the presence of the oxidizing conditions. An important parameter determining the efficiency of the oxidation of the pyrolysis products is gas temperature in the plasma reactor.Web of Science31829028

    Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) is diagnosed in about one quarter of patients with lung cancer. Among all lung cancer SCLC is featured by the highest malignancy. Despite the chemo- and radiosensitivity, regardless of the stage, only a small percentage of patients achieved long-term survival. In this publication we present a case of the patient with extensive stage of SCLC who underwent three lines of chemotherapy. A long-term survival was achieved by these treatment.Drobnokomórkowy rak płuca (SCLC) rozpoznawany jest u około jednej czwartej chorych z nowotworem złośliwym płuca. Spośród wszystkich nowotworów złośliwych płuca wyróżnia się największą złośliwością. Pomimo dużej chemio- i radiowrażliwości, stosowania chemioterapii wielolekowej oraz radioterapii, niezależnie od stopnia zaawansowania tylko niewielki procent chorych uzyskuje długotrwałe przeżycie. W niniejszym opracowaniu przedstawiono przypadek chorej z rozpoznaniem SCLC w stadium rozległym, którą poddano trzem liniom chemioterapii. Dzięki leczeniu udało się uzyskać wieloletnie przeżycie.

    Estimating the incidence of rotavirus infection in children from India and Malawi from serial anti-rotavirus IgA titres.

    Accurate estimates of rotavirus incidence in infants are crucial given disparities in rotavirus vaccine effectiveness from low-income settings. Sero-surveys are a pragmatic means of estimating incidence however serological data is prone to misclassification. This study used mixture models to estimate incidence of rotavirus infection from anti-rotavirus immunoglobulin A (IgA) titres in infants from Vellore, India, and Karonga, Malawi. IgA titres were measured using serum samples collected at 6 month intervals for 36 months from 373 infants from Vellore and 12 months from 66 infants from Karonga. Mixture models (two component Gaussian mixture distributions) were fit to the difference in titres between time points to estimate risk of sero-positivity and derive incidence estimates. A peak incidence of 1.05(95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.64, 1.64) infections per child-year was observed in the first 6 months of life in Vellore. This declined incrementally with each subsequent time interval. Contrastingly in Karonga incidence was greatest in the second 6 months of life (1.41 infections per child year [95% CI: 0.79, 2.29]). This study demonstrates that infants from Vellore experience peak rotavirus incidence earlier than those from Karonga. Identifying such differences in transmission patterns is important in informing vaccine strategy, particularly where vaccine effectiveness is modest

    Bipolar spectrum features in obese individuals

    Aim. The relationships between obesity and bipolar spectrum disorders (BSD) are unclear. Thus, the aim of our study were to approximate the prevalence of soft bipolar features in patients seeking treatment for obesity. Methods. We performed a nested case-control study (cases: 90 patients with the mean BMI=38.1±7.0 [range: 30.1–62.5]; controls: 70 healthy volunteers with the mean BMI=21.6±2.1 [range: 18.5–24.9]). The participants were screened for the BSD symptoms with the Mood Disorder Questionnaire. Results. Patients with obesity were significantly more likely to score ≥7 pts. on the MDQ 25.6% vs. 8.6%; p=0.01). In comparison to non-obese individuals, the obese patients scored significantly higher in MDQ section I and on the MDQ items referring to the ‘irritability–racing thoughts’ dimension of hypomania. The multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that obesity had been significantly related to the odds of obtaining ≥7 pts. on the MDQ section 1 (odds ratio [OR] = 2.07; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.17–3.63), and marginally significantly related to experiencing periods of ‘ups’ and ‘downs’(OR = 1.67; 95% CI: 1.00–2.81). Conclusions. Our study adds to previous suggestions that obesity may be significantly related to the BSD. However, the clinical implications of this finding need to be determined in further studies, performed in accordance with the paradigm of evidence based medicine (EBM)

    Herpes simplex encephalitis is linked with selective mitochondrial damage; a post-mortem and in vitro study

    Herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) encephalitis (HSE) is the most commonly diagnosed cause of viral encephalitis in western countries. Despite antiviral treatment, HSE remains a devastating disease with high morbidity and mortality. Improved understanding of pathogenesis may lead to more effective therapies. Mitochondrial damage has been reported during HSV infection in vitro. However, whether it occurs in the human brain and whether this contributes to the pathogenesis has not been fully explored. Minocycline, an antibiotic, has been reported to protect mitochondria and limit brain damage. Minocycline has not been studied in HSV infection. In the first genome-wide transcriptomic study of post-mortem human HSE brain tissue, we demonstrated a highly preferential reduction in mitochondrial genome (MtDNA) encoded transcripts in HSE cases (n = 3) compared to controls (n = 5). Brain tissue exhibited a significant inverse correlation for immunostaining between cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1), a MtDNA encoded enzyme subunit, and HSV-1; with lower abundance for mitochondrial protein in regions where HSV-1 was abundant. Preferential loss of mitochondrial function, among MtDNA encoded components, was confirmed using an in vitro primary human astrocyte HSV-1 infection model. Dysfunction of cytochrome c oxidase (CO), a mitochondrial enzyme composed predominantly of MtDNA encoded subunits, preceded that of succinate dehydrogenase (composed entirely of nuclear encoded subunits). Minocycline treated astrocytes exhibited higher CO1 transcript abundance, sustained CO activity and cell viability compared to non-treated astrocytes. Based on observations from HSE patient tissue, this study highlights mitochondrial damage as a critical and early event during HSV-1 infection. We demonstrate minocycline preserves mitochondrial function and cell viability during HSV-1 infection. Minocycline, and mitochondrial protection, offers a novel adjunctive therapeutic approach for limiting brain cell damage and potentially improving outcome among HSE patients
