    Fluctuation dynamics of a single magnetic chain

    "Tunable" fluids such as magnetorheological "MR" and electrorheological "ER" fluids are comprised of paramagnetic or dielectric particles suspended in a low-viscosity liquid. Upon the application of a magnetic or electric field, these fluids display a dramatic, reversible, and rapid increase of the viscosity. This change in viscosity can, in fact, be tuned by varying the applied field, hence the name "tunable fluids". This effect is due to longitudinal aggregation of the particles into chains in the direction of the applied field and the subsequent lateral aggregation into larger semisolid domains. A recent theoretical model by Halsey and Toor "HT" explains chain aggregation in dipolar fluids by a fluctuation-mediated long-range interaction between chains and predicts that this interaction will be equally efficient at all applied fields. This paper describes video-microscopy observations of long, isolated magnetic chains that test HT theory. The measurements show that, in contrast to the HT theory, chain aggregation occurs more efficiently at higher magnetic field strength (H0) and that this efficiency scales as H0½. Our experiments also yield the steady-state and time-dependent fluctuation spectra C(x,x')≡ [h(x)-h(x')]²>½ and C(x,x',t,t')≡ ½ for the instantaneous deviation h(x,t) from an axis parallel to the field direction to a point x on the chain. Results show that the steady-state fluctuation growth is similar to a biased random walk with respect to the interspacing ͉ |x-x'| along the chain, C(x,x')≈|x-x'| α, with a roughness exponent α =0.53±0.02. This result is partially confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations. Time-dependent results also show that chain relaxation is slowed down with respect to classical Brownian diffusion due to the magnetic chain connectivity, C(x,x',t,t')≈|t-t'|β, with a growth exponent β=0.35±0.05<½. All data can be collapsed onto a single curve according to C(x,x',t,t')≈|x-x'| α ψ (|t-t'| / |x-x'| z ), with a dynamic exponent z= α /β≅ 1.42

    Measuring eGovernment Portal Management on the Local Level: Results from a Survey of Public Administration Officials

    Given the importance of eGovernment portals as an integral access interface of modern public service provision, this contribution concentrates on the issue of the dimensions and derived success factors of these information systems. Starting with the DeLone &amp; McLean IS success model and the resource-based view as foundations, this article conceptualizes the important success factors of eGovernment portals and then integrates these into a research model. The empirical results show the importance of the different dimensions of eGovernment Portal Management as well as the development of eGovernment portals so far. For public service portals on the local level the key management dimensions are information, system, service and privacy management. The evaluation of these dimensions as well as perceived internal and external success in public administration institutions complement user-based quality assessments and highlight organizational strengths and weaknesses

    Evaluating RNAlater® as a preservative for using near-infrared spectroscopy to predict Anopheles gambiae age and species.

    Mosquito age and species identification is a crucial determinant of the efficacy of vector control programmes. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has previously been applied successfully to rapidly, non-destructively, and simultaneously determine the age and species of freshly anesthetized African malaria vectors from the Anopheles gambiae s.l. species complex: An. gambiae s. s. and Anopheles arabiensis. However, this has only been achieved on freshly-collected specimens and future applications will require samples to be preserved between field collections and scanning by NIRS. In this study, a sample preservation method (RNAlater(®)) was evaluated for mosquito age and species identification by NIRS against scans of fresh samples. Two strains of An. gambiae s.s. (CDC and G3) and two strains of An. arabiensis (Dongola, KGB) were reared in the laboratory while the third strain of An. arabiensis (Ifakara) was reared in a semi-field system. All mosquitoes were scanned when fresh and rescanned after preservation in RNAlater(®) for several weeks. Age and species identification was determined using a cross-validation. The mean accuracy obtained for predicting the age of young (<7 days) or old (≥ 7 days) of all fresh (n = 633) and all preserved (n = 691) mosquito samples using the cross-validation technique was 83% and 90%, respectively. For species identification, accuracies were 82% for fresh against 80% for RNAlater(®) preserved. For both analyses, preserving mosquitoes in RNAlater(®) was associated with a highly significant reduction in the likelihood of a misclassification of mosquitoes as young or old using NIRS. Important to note is that the costs for preserving mosquito specimens with RNAlater(®) ranges from 3-13 cents per insect depending on the size of the tube used and the number of specimens pooled in one tube. RNAlater(®) can be used to preserve mosquitoes for subsequent scanning and analysis by NIRS to determine their age and species with minimal costs and with accuracy similar to that achieved from fresh insects. Cold storage availability allows samples to be stored longer than a week after field collection. Further study to develop robust calibrations applicable to other strains from diverse ecological settings is recommended

    Organization of Cellular Receptors into a Nanoscale Junction during HIV-1 Adhesion

    The fusion of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) with its host cell is the target for new antiretroviral therapies. Viral particles interact with the flexible plasma membrane via viral surface protein gp120 which binds its primary cellular receptor CD4 and subsequently the coreceptor CCR5. However, whether and how these receptors become organized at the adhesive junction between cell and virion are unknown. Here, stochastic modeling predicts that, regarding binding to gp120, cellular receptors CD4 and CCR5 form an organized, ring-like, nanoscale structure beneath the virion, which locally deforms the plasma membrane. This organized adhesive junction between cell and virion, which we name the viral junction, is reminiscent of the well-characterized immunological synapse, albeit at much smaller length scales. The formation of an organized viral junction under multiple physiopathologically relevant conditions may represent a novel intermediate step in productive infection

    RaD-X: Complementary measurements of dose rates at aviation altitudes

    The RaD-X stratospheric balloon flight organized by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration was launched from Fort Sumner on 25 September 2015 and carried several instruments to measure the radiation field in the upper atmosphere at the average vertical cutoff rigidity Rc of 4.1 GV. The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt) in cooperation with Lufthansa German Airlines supported this campaign with an independent measuring flight at the altitudes of civil aviation on a round trip from Germany to Japan. The goal was to measure dose rates under similar space weather conditions over an area on the Northern Hemisphere opposite to the RaD-X flight. Dose rates were measured in the target areas, i.e., around vertical cutoff rigidity Rc of 4.1 GV, at two flight altitudes for about 1 h at each position with acceptable counting statistics. The analysis of the space weather situation during the flights shows that measuring data were acquired under stable and moderate space weather conditions with a virtually undisturbed magnetosphere. The measured rates of absorbed dose in silicon and ambient dose equivalent complement the data recorded during the balloon flight. The combined measurements provide a set of experimental data suitable for validating and improving numerical models for the calculation of radiation exposure at aviation altitudes

    "Urban Plant" light-weight solar system for parking and other urban double use applications

    Innovations on all aspects of BOS and solar cell integration into the module are essential to further reducing the costs of PV electricity and substantial progress has been made in the past years. One other important aspect is the availability of space for PV power production, especially in densely occupied urban areas. Roof space is limited or only partially useable. A promising other application for PV power production in urban areas today are PV carports on parking lots, which require massive structures and foundations. The approach presented here is a newly developed PV plant which automatically stores the PV modules in a protection box in case of bad weather conditions. Avoiding bad weather conditions implies that only a fraction of the mechanical load is present on the PV modules and the structure, enabling light weight structural design. The newly developed PV plant is folding the PV generator into a protection box and will pull out the PV generator, carried on two supporting cables for operation during good weather conditions. An innovative autonomous control system was developed based on local meteo sensors and regional weather information. The PV modules of the Urban Plant are mounted six meters above a parking lot with the benefit of full double use of the land below. Thus a PV system has been built with currently 52 kW nominal power, 16 meter wide, with a folding roof of PV modules expanding 24 meters in one direction. The system can be extended to 104 kWp with a second folding roof expanding into the other direction. As special PV system design was developed with a light weight PV generator using module laminates with special mounting elements. Moreover the system comprises innovative string wiring and inverters that can be also integrated into the safety box. A first 250kW commercial system is scheduled to be set into operation in Jan 2014 in Southern Germany

    Introduction. The study of the biological aspects of Anopheles spp., strengthens the entomological surveillance.Objective. To determine biological aspects and behavior of adult Anopheles mosquitoes in the urban area of Puerto Carreño municipality, Vichada, Colombia.Materials and methods. Wild anophelines were collected landing on humans both indoors and outdoors between 18:00h and 06:00h for 50 min/h during two consecutive nights/month for eight months in the urban area of Puerto Carreño. The biting rate activity, the natural infection by Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax VK247 and VK210 using ELISA, and the annual entomological inoculation rate were determined for each species. The members of the Albitarsis complex were determined by amplificacion of the white gene by polymerase chain reaction. Results. In order of abundance the species found were An. darlingi (n=1,166), An. marajoara sensu stricto (n=152), An. braziliensis (n=59), An. albitarsis F (n=25), An. albitarsis sensu lato (n=16), An.argyritarsis (n=3) and An. oswaldoi sensu lato (n=2). An. darlingi showed two activity peaks between 21:00 to 22:00 and 05:00 to 06:00 hours outdoors and between 21:00 to 22:00 and 04:00 to 05:00 indoors. Natural infection of this species was found with P. vivax VK210 and its annual entomological inoculation rate was 2. Natural infection of An marajoara sensu stricto with P. falciparum was found, with an annual entomological inoculation rate of 5 and a peak biting activity between 18:00 to 19:00 hrsboth indoors and outdoors. Conclusion. Transmission of malaria in the urban area of Puerto Carreño, Vichada, can occur by An. darlingi and An. marajoara s. s.Introducción. El estudio de los aspectos de la biología de los mosquitos Anopheles spp. fortalece la vigilancia entomológica.Objetivo. Determinar los aspectos de la biología y el comportamiento de las especies adultas del género Anopheles presentes en el área urbana de Puerto Carreño.Materiales y métodos. Se capturaron Anopheles spp. silvestres que se habían posado en personas, en el intradomicilio y peridomicilio de viviendas ubicadas en el área urbana del municipio de Puerto Carreño (Vichada), entre las 18:00 y las 06:00 horas, durante dos noches consecutivas por mes y durante ocho meses. Se determinó la actividad de picadura para cada especie, la infección natural por Plasmodium falciparum y P. vivax VK247 y VK210 mediante la técnica ELISA, y se determinó la tasa de inoculación entomológica. Los individuos pertenecientes al complejo Albitarsis se determinaron mediante amplificación en cadena de la polimerasa del fragmento del gen white.Resultados. En orden de abundancia, se encontraron: An. darlingi (n=1.166), An. marajoara sensu stricto (n=152), An. braziliensis (n=59), An. albitarsis F (n=25), An. albitarsis sensu lato (n=16), An. argyritarsis (n=3) y An. oswaldoi sensu lato (n=2). Anopheles darlingi registró dos picos de actividad de picadura entre las 21:00-22:00 y las 5:00-06:00 horas en el peridomicilio y, entre las 21:00-22:00 y las 04:00-05:00 horas, en el intradomicilio. Esta especie se encontró naturalmente infectada por P. vivax VK210 y registró una tasa de inoculación entomológica de dos para el año. Anopheles marajoara s.s. se encontró naturalmente infectado por P. falciparum y registró una tasa de inoculación entomológica de 5 para el año, con un máximo de actividad de picadura entre las 18:00 y las 19:00 horas, tanto en el intradomicilio como en el peridomicilio.Conclusión. Es posible que exista transmisión de malaria en el área urbana de Puerto Carreño (Vichada) y An. darlingi y An. marajoara s.s. serían las especies incriminadas
