How should we measure psychological resilience in sport performers?
Psychological resilience is important in sport because athletes must constantly withstand a wide range of pressures to attain and sustain high performance. To advance psychologists’ understanding of this area, there exists an urgent need to develop a sport-specific measure of resilience. The purpose of this paper is to review psychometric issues in resilience research and to discuss the implications for sport psychology. Drawing on the wider general psychology literature to inform the discussion, the narrative is divided into three main sections relating to resilience and its assessment: adversity, positive adaptation, and protective factors. The first section reviews the different ways that adversity has been measured and considers the potential problems of using items with varying degrees of controllability and risk. The second section discusses the different approaches to assessing positive adaptation and examines the issue of circularity pervasive in resilience research. The final section explores the various issues related to the assessment of protective factors drawing directly from current measures of resilience in other psychology sub-disciplines. The commentary concludes with key recommendations for sport psychology researchers seeking to develop a measure of psychological resilience in athletes
Enhancing communication between dementia care staff and their residents: an arts-inspired intervention
Objectives: The arts are increasingly recognised as important and beneficial activities for people living with dementia. However, there is little peer-reviewed published research exploring arts-based learning for dementia care staff. In response, this paper explores (a) how dementia care staff describe forms of communication in care settings, and (b) the impact on communication following four sessions of ‘Creative Conversations’, an arts-based intervention for skills development. Method: Fourteen care homes received the intervention, delivered as 4 × 2 hour sessions. The intervention uses a range of activities (e.g. poetry, film, music, art making). Twenty–eight care staff were opportunistically sampled (mean age = 42.29), and provided pre-post qualitative data, obtained through interviews. Transcripts were analysed thematically. Results: At baseline, the dominant ‘task-focussed’ nature of care work was described as a barrier to communication, challenging opportunities for developing meaningful relationships with residents. Post-intervention, three primary themes were identified regarding improving communication: (1) learning through the arts (secondary themes: simplicity and subtlety, innovation in communication, and strengthening the role of non-verbal communication), (2) Enhancing creative approaches to care (secondary themes: element of surprise, confidence to experiment and catalyst for communication) and (3) professional introspection (secondary themes: development of empathy, sharing knowledge and experiences and a new appreciation). Conclusions: The intervention validated staff skills and confidence, enabling meaningful interactions that could be creative, ‘in the moment’, spontaneous and improvised. This arts-based intervention, which departs from formal education and fact-based learning may be particularly useful for the development of the dementia care workforce
Economic shocks and health resilience: lessons from the Russian Federation
Background: Despite extensive research on determinants of health, there is much less information on factors protecting health among those exposed to economic shocks. Using longitudinal data from the Russian Federation in the post-Soviet period, we examined individual-level factors that enhance resilience of health to economic shocks. Methods: Logistic regression analysed factors associated with good self-assessed health (SAH) and health resilience, using pooled samples from the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey-Higher School of Economics (1994–2012). Results: The general population consistently reported ‘average’ SAH, indicating almost invariant trends over the years. Male gender was the strongest predictor of good SAH and health resilience. Other factors positively associated with good SAH were age, higher education, employment, residing in rural areas, living in a larger and/or non-poor household. Among unemployed and those remaining unemployed, residing in rural areas, living in a larger and/or non-poor household remained the strongest predictors of good SAH and health resilience. These same factors were also important for males with recent job loss. Conclusions: Several factors predicting good SAH in the general population also influence health resilience factors among those remaining unemployed and experiencing a job loss. Such factors help to identify those most vulnerable and aid targeting assistance during economic crises
Increased IL-6 expression in osteoclasts is necessary but not sufficient for the development of Paget's disease of bone
Measles virus nucleocapsid protein (MVNP) expression in osteoclasts (OCLs) and mutation of the SQSTM1 (p62) gene contribute to the increased OCL activity in Paget's disease (PD). OCLs expressing MVNP display many of the features of PD OCLs. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) production is essential for the pagetic phenotype, because transgenic mice with MVNP targeted to OCLs develop pagetic OCLs and lesions, but this phenotype is absent when MVNP mice are bred to IL-6(-/-) mice. In contrast, mutant p62 expression in OCL precursors promotes receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL) hyperresponsivity and increased OCL production, but OCLs that form have normal morphology, are not hyperresponsive to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25-(OH)2 D3 ), nor produce elevated levels of IL-6. We previously generated p62(P394L) knock-in mice (p62KI) and found that although OCL numbers were increased, the mice did not develop pagetic lesions. However, mice expressing both MVNP and p62KI developed more exuberant pagetic lesions than mice expressing MVNP alone. To examine the role of elevated IL-6 in PD and determine if MVNP mediates its effects primarily through elevation of IL-6, we generated transgenic mice that overexpress IL-6 driven by the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) promoter (TIL-6 mice) and produce IL-6 at levels comparable to MVNP mice. These were crossed with p62KI mice to determine whether IL-6 overexpression cooperates with mutant p62 to produce pagetic lesions. OCL precursors from p62KI/TIL-6 mice formed greater numbers of OCLs than either p62KI or TIL-6 OCL precursors in response to 1,25-(OH)2 D3 . Histomorphometric analysis of bones from p62KI/TIL-6 mice revealed increased OCL numbers per bone surface area compared to wild-type (WT) mice. However, micro-quantitative CT (µQCT) analysis did not reveal significant differences between p62KI/TIL-6 and WT mice, and no pagetic OCLs or lesions were detected in vivo. Thus, increased IL-6 expression in OCLs from p62KI mice contributes to increased responsivity to 1,25-(OH)2 D3 and increased OCL numbers, but is not sufficient to induce Paget's-like OCLs or bone lesions in vivo
Blocking the ZZ domain of sequestosome1/p62 suppresses myeloma growth and osteoclast formation in vitro and induces dramatic bone formation in myeloma-bearing bones in vivo
We reported that p62 (sequestosome 1) serves as a signaling hub in bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) for the formation of signaling complexes, including NFκB, p38MAPK and JNK, that are involved in the increased osteoclastogenesis and multiple myeloma (MM) cell growth induced by BMSCs that are key contributors to multiple myeloma bone disease (MMBD), and demonstrated that the ZZ domain of p62 (p62-ZZ) is required for BMSC enhancement of MMBD. We recently identified a novel p62-ZZ inhibitor, XRK3F2, which inhibits MM cell growth and BMSC growth enhancement of human MM cells. In the current study, we evaluate the relative specificity of XRK3F2 for p62-ZZ, characterize XRK3F2's capacity to inhibit growth of primary MM cells and human MM cell lines, and test the in vivo effects of XRK3F2 in the immunocompetent 5TGM1 MM model. We found that XRK3F2 induces dramatic cortical bone formation that is restricted to MM containing bones and blocked the effects and upregulation of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), an osteoblast (OB) differentiation inhibitor that is increased in the MM bone marrow microenvironment and utilizes signaling complexes formed on p62-ZZ, in BMSC. Interestingly, XRK3F2 had no effect on non-MM bearing bone. These results demonstrate that targeting p62 in MM models has profound effects on MMBD
