Multi-scalar black holes with contingent primary hair: Mechanics and stability
We generalize a class of magnetically charged black holes holes non-minimally
coupled to two scalar fields previously found by one of us [gr-qc/9910041] to
the case of multiple scalar fields. The black holes possess a novel type of
primary scalar hair, which we call a contingent primary hair: although the
solutions possess degrees of freedom which are not completely determined by the
other charges of the theory, the charges necessarily vanish in the absence of
the magnetic monopole. Only one constraint relates the black hole mass to the
magnetic charge and scalar charges of the theory. We obtain a Smarr-type
thermodynamic relation, and the first law of black hole thermodynamics for the
system. We further explicitly show in the two-scalar-field case that, contrary
to the case of many other hairy black holes, the black hole solutions are

Gravitational energy as dark energy: Concordance of cosmological tests
We provide preliminary quantitative evidence that a new solution to averaging
the observed inhomogeneous structure of matter in the universe [gr-qc/0702082,
arxiv:0709.0732], may lead to an observationally viable cosmology without
exotic dark energy. We find parameters which simultaneously satisfy three
independent tests: the match to the angular scale of the sound horizon detected
in the cosmic microwave background anisotropy spectrum; the effective comoving
baryon acoustic oscillation scale detected in galaxy clustering statistics; and
type Ia supernova luminosity distances. Independently of the supernova data,
concordance is obtained for a value of the Hubble constant which agrees with
the measurement of the Hubble Key team of Sandage et al [astro-ph/0603647].
Best-fit parameters include a global average Hubble constant H_0 = 61.7
(+1.2/-1.1) km/s/Mpc, a present epoch void volume fraction of f_{v0} = 0.76
(+0.12/-0.09), and an age of the universe of 14.7 (+0.7/-0.5) billion years as
measured by observers in galaxies. The mass ratio of non-baryonic dark matter
to baryonic matter is 3.1 (+2.5/-2.4), computed with a baryon-to-photon ratio

Average observational quantities in the timescape cosmology
We examine the properties of a recently proposed observationally viable
alternative to homogeneous cosmology with smooth dark energy, the timescape
cosmology. In the timescape model cosmic acceleration is realized as an
apparent effect related to the calibration of clocks and rods of observers in
bound systems relative to volume-average observers in an inhomogeneous geometry
in ordinary general relativity. The model is based on an exact solution to a
Buchert average of the Einstein equations with backreaction. The present paper
examines a number of observational tests which will enable the timescape model
to be distinguished from homogeneous cosmologies with a cosmological constant
or other smooth dark energy, in current and future generations of dark energy
experiments. Predictions are presented for: comoving distance measures; H(z);
the equivalent of the dark energy equation of state, w(z); the Om(z) measure of
Sahni, Shafieloo and Starobinsky; the Alcock-Paczynski test; the baryon
acoustic oscillation measure, D_v; the inhomogeneity test of Clarkson, Bassett
and Lu; and the time drift of cosmological redshifts. Where possible, the
predictions are compared to recent independent studies of similar measures in
homogeneous cosmologies with dark energy. Three separate tests with indications
of results in possible tension with the Lambda CDM model are found to be

Charged gravitational instantons in five-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell theory
We study a solution of the Einstein-Gauus-Bonnet theory in 5 dimensions
coupled to a Maxwell field, whose euclidean continuation gives rise to an
instanton describing black hole pair production. We also discuss the dual

presented. In all cases explicit expressions, depending sinusoidally on polar
angle, are given for the density and internal supporting pressure of the
rotating source. In addition to the non-zero axial velocity of the fluid
particles it is shown that there is also a radial component of velocity which
vanishes only at the poles. The velocity four-vector has a zero component
between poles
Charged Dilaton Black Holes with a Cosmological Constant
The properties of static spherically symmetric black holes, which are either
electrically or magnetically charged, and which are coupled to the dilaton in
the presence of a cosmological constant, are considered. It is shown that such
solutions do not exist if the cosmological constant is positive (in arbitrary
spacetime dimension >= 4). However, asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole
solutions with a single horizon do exist if the cosmological constant is
negative. These solutions are studied numerically in four dimensions and the
thermodynamic properties of the solutions are derived. The extreme solutions
are found to have zero entropy and infinite temperature for all non-zero values

Psychological consequences of childhood obesity: psychiatric comorbidity and prevention
Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century with far-reaching and enduring adverse consequences for health outcomes. Over 42 million children <5 years worldwide are estimated to be overweight (OW) or obese (OB), and if current trends continue, then an estimated 70 million children will be OW or OB by 2025. The purpose of this review was to focus on psychiatric, psychological, and psychosocial consequences of childhood obesity (OBy) to include a broad range of international studies. The aim was to establish what has recently changed in relation to the common psychological consequences associated with childhood OBy. A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for articles presenting information on the identification or prevention of psychiatric morbidity in childhood obesity. Relevant data were extracted and narratively reviewed. Findings established childhood OW/OBy was negatively associated with psychological comorbidities, such as depression, poorer perceived lower scores on health-related quality of life, emotional and behavioral disorders, and self-esteem during childhood. Evidence related to the association between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and OBy remains unconvincing because of various findings from studies. OW children were more likely to experience multiple associated psychosocial problems than their healthy-weight peers, which may be adversely influenced by OBy stigma, teasing, and bullying. OBy stigma, teasing, and bullying are pervasive and can have serious consequences for emotional and physical health and performance. It remains unclear as to whether psychiatric disorders and psychological problems are a cause or a consequence of childhood obesity or whether common factors promote both obesity and psychiatric disturbances in susceptible children and adolescents. A cohesive and strategic approach to tackle this current obesity epidemic is necessary to combat this increasing trend which is compromising the health and well-being of the young generation and seriously impinging on resources and economic costs
Future deceleration due to cosmic backreaction in presence of the event horizon
The present acceleration of the universe leads to the formation of a
cosmological future event horizon. We explore the effects of the event horizon
on cosmological backreaction due to inhomogeneities in the universe. Beginning
from the onset of the present accelerated era, we show that backreaction in
presence of the event horizon causes acceleration to slow down in the
subsequent evolution. Transition to deceleration occurs eventually, ensuring
