An Investigation of Void Fraction in the Stratified/Annular Flow Regions in Smooth, Horizontal Tubes
Refrigerants R134a and R410A have been used for void fraction measurements in smooth
horizontal tubes with diameters between 4mm and 7mm. Quality and mass flux were varied from
5% to 90% and 75 kglm2-s to 700 kglm2-s, respectively. Two test loops, one for condensing
flows at 35C and the other for evaporating flows at 5C, were used in the investigation. Results
show that near the transition from annular to stratified flow void fraction changed from viscousinertial
dependence to gravitational-inertial dominated dependence. An important feature
observed is the annular flow region's relative insensitivity to mass flux while the border region
between annular and stratified flows is characterized by strong mass flux dependence.Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Project 7
Entanglement between a qubit and the environment in the spin-boson model
The quantitative description of the quantum entanglement between a qubit and
its environment is considered. Specifically, for the ground state of the
spin-boson model, the entropy of entanglement of the spin is calculated as a
function of , the strength of the ohmic coupling to the environment,
and , the level asymmetry. This is done by a numerical
renormalization group treatment of the related anisotropic Kondo model. For
, the entanglement increases monotonically with , until it
becomes maximal for . For fixed , the entanglement
is a maximum as a function of for a value, .Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Shortened version restricted to groundstate

Operating at the extreme: Estimating the upper yield boundary of winter wheat production in commercial practice
© 2020 The Authors. Wheat farming provides 28.5% of global cereal production. After steady growth in average crop yield from 1950 to 1990, wheat yields have generally stagnated, which prompts the question of whether further improvements are possible. Statistical studies of agronomic parameters such as crop yield have so far exclusively focused on estimating parameters describing the whole of the data, rather than the highest yields specifically. These indicators include the mean or median yield of a crop, or finding the combinations of agronomic traits that are correlated with increasing average yields. In this paper, we take an alternative approach and consider high yields only. We carry out an extreme value analysis of winter wheat yield data collected in England and Wales between 2006 and 2015. This analysis suggests that, under current climate and growing conditions, there is indeed a finite upper bound for winter wheat yield, whose value we estimate to be 17.60 tonnes per hectare. We then refine the analysis for strata defined by either location or level of use of agricultural inputs. We find that there is no statistical evidence for variation of maximal yield depending on location, and neither is there statistical evidence that maximum yield levels are improved by high levels of crop protection and fertilizer use
Blood thicker than water: Kinship, disease prevalence and group size drive divergent patterns of infection risk in a social mammal
The importance of social- and kin-structuring of populations for the transmission of wildlife disease is widely assumed but poorly described. Social structure can help dilute risks of transmission for group members, and is relatively easy to measure, but kin-association represents a further level of population sub-structure that is harder to measure, particularly when association behaviours happen underground. Here, using epidemiological and molecular genetic data from a wild, high-density population of the European badger (Meles meles), we quantify the risks of infection with Mycobacterium bovis (the causative agent of tuberculosis) in cubs. The risk declines with increasing size of its social group, but this net dilution effect conceals divergent patterns of infection risk. Cubs only enjoy reduced risk when social groups have a higher proportion of test-negative individuals. Cubs suffer higher infection risk in social groups containing resident infectious adults, and these risks are exaggerated when cubs and infectious adults are closely related. We further identify key differences in infection risk associated with resident infectious males and females. We link our results to parentâ offspring interactions and other kin-biased association, but also consider the possibility that susceptibility to infection is heritable. These patterns of infection risk help to explain the observation of a herd immunity effect in badgers following low-intensity vaccination campaigns. They also reveal kinship and kin-association to be important, and often hidden, drivers of disease transmission in social mammals
Magnetotransport through a strongly interacting quantum dot
We study the effect of a magnetic field on the conductance through a strongly
interacting quantum dot by using the finite temperature extension of Wilson's
numerical renormalization group method to dynamical quantities. The quantum dot
has one active level for transport and is modelled by an Anderson impurity
attached to left and right electron reservoirs. Detailed predictions are made
for the linear conductance and the spin-resolved conductance as a function of
gate voltage, temperature and magnetic field strength. A strongly coupled
quantum dot in a magnetic field acts as a spin filter which can be tuned by
varying the gate voltage. The largest spin-filtering effect is found in the
range of gate voltages corresponding to the mixed valence regime of the
Anderson impurity model.Comment: Revised version, to appear in PRB, 4 pages, 4 figure
A Process for Improving Course Quality based on Mid-Semester Feedback
Proceedings of: First International Conference on Reforming Education, Quality of Teaching and Technology-Enhanced Learning: Learning Technologies, Quality of Education, Educational Systems, Evaluation, Pedagogies (TECH-EDUCATION 2010). Athens, Greece, May 19-21, 2010.Quality control mechanisms are becoming more important in higher educational institutions. Student evaluation of teaching is typically used to obtain feedback from students about a learning experience but its effect in the course may take too long. Fast feedback mechanisms, in exchange, look at obtaining feedback in order to apply corrective measures quickly. In this paper a process is described to obtain feedback from the students about a course, analyze the received results, and identify the most significant aspects. The process has been applied to a course and led to some adjustments that had immediate impact on the course. The authors are truly indebted to Miguel Valero for his guidance during the design of this process. Wilson chains are not thermal reservoirs
Wilson chains, based on a logarithmic discretization of a continuous
spectrum, are widely used to model an electronic (or bosonic) bath for Kondo
spins and other quantum impurities within the numerical renormalization group
method and other numerical approaches. In this short note we point out that
Wilson chains can not serve as thermal reservoirs as their temperature changes
by a number of order Delta E when a finite amount of energy Delta E is added.
This proves that for a large class of non-equilibrium problems they cannot be
used to predict the long-time behavior.Comment: 2 page
Extensions of the matrix Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy from generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction
The matrix version of the -KdV hierarchy has been recently
treated as the reduced system arising in a Drinfeld-Sokolov type Hamiltonian
symmetry reduction applied to a Poisson submanifold in the dual of the Lie
algebra . Here a
series of extensions of this matrix Gelfand-Dickey system is derived by means
of a generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction defined for the Lie algebra
using the natural
embedding for any positive integer. The
hierarchies obtained admit a description in terms of a matrix
pseudo-differential operator comprising an -KdV type positive part and a
non-trivial negative part. This system has been investigated previously in the
case as a constrained KP system. In this paper the previous results are
considerably extended and a systematic study is presented on the basis of the
Drinfeld-Sokolov approach that has the advantage that it leads to local Poisson
brackets and makes clear the conformal (-algebra) structures related to
the KdV type hierarchies. Discrete reductions and modified versions of the
extended -KdV hierarchies are also discussed.Comment: 60 pages, plain TE
STM conductance of Kondo impurities on open and structured surfaces
We study the scanning tunneling microscopy response for magnetic atoms on
open and structured surfaces using Wilson's renormalization group. We observe
Fano resonances associated with Kondo resonances and interference effects. For
a magnetic atom in a quantum corral coupled to the confined surface states, and
experimentally relevant parameters, we observe a large confinement induced
effect not present in the experiments. These results suggest that the Kondo
screening is dominated by the bulk electrons rather than the surface ones.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
