Understanding How to Inform Blind and Low-Vision Users about Data Privacy through Privacy Question Answering Assistants
Understanding and managing data privacy in the digital world can be
challenging for sighted users, let alone blind and low-vision (BLV) users.
There is limited research on how BLV users, who have special accessibility
needs, navigate data privacy, and how potential privacy tools could assist
them. We conducted an in-depth qualitative study with 21 US BLV participants to
understand their data privacy risk perception and mitigation, as well as their
information behaviors related to data privacy. We also explored BLV users'
attitudes towards potential privacy question answering (Q&A) assistants that
enable them to better navigate data privacy information. We found that BLV
users face heightened security and privacy risks, but their risk mitigation is
often insufficient. They do not necessarily seek data privacy information but
clearly recognize the benefits of a potential privacy Q&A assistant. They also
expect privacy Q&A assistants to possess cross-platform compatibility, support
multi-modality, and demonstrate robust functionality. Our study sheds light on
BLV users' expectations when it comes to usability, accessibility, trust and

Agronomic Utilization of Precipitated Calcium Carbonate—Effect of PCC on Sugar Beet Root Aphid Control and Herbicide Dose Response of Kochia Grown on PCC Piles
Agricultural use of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), a byproduct of sugar clarification process, as a possible source of nutrients and pest and disease control in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris.) needs a careful examination of the risk and benefit assessment at various levels of management and production. A series of controlled environment studies were conducted in Scottsbluff, NE, to assess the 1) effect of PCC on root aphids in sugar beet, and 2) risk of the weed kochia spreading by applying PCC to agricultural land and its chemical control strategy, by conducting various dose-response studies. A replicated lab study was conducted twice to determine the effect of PCC on root aphid in sugar beet using three rates of PCC (9, 18, and 27 Mg ha−1) and a control. The results showed that root aphid populations in all PCC-amended treatments were significantly reduced when compared to the control (p \u3c 0.05). Two cycles of dose-response studies using the herbicides Roundup and Clarity at 6 concentrations revealed that kochia biotypes grown on PCC piles at three western sugar production locations were effectively controlled (LD50) with the current rate recommendations administered in this region for both herbicides. More field experiments are needed to confirm the results of these controlled environment studies
Agronomic Potential of Using Precipitated Calcium Carbonate on Early Plant Growth and Soil Quality in the Intermountain West - Greenhouse Studies
Storage and management of large piles of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) from sugarbeet processing are a challenge in the western US. Potential uses of this product on surrounding agricultural lands in western NE, eastern WY and northeast CO requires an evaluation of chemical and agronomic impacts of PCC on soils and crop growth. A preliminary greenhouse study was conducted in Scottsbluff, NE using 10 soils from the 3 states. Soils were mixed with 11, 22, 33 and 44 Mg ha-1 rates of PCC to test the early plant growth of sugarbeet, corn, and dry bean in addition to determining soil chemical characteristics. Chemical analysis of PCC from the three processing factories indicates that PCC provides some nitrogen and phosphorus, in addition to some iron, depending on rate. Application of four rates of PCC to neutral to slightly alkali soils neither improved nor negatively impacted the soil chemical characteristics. Dry matter of the three crops after 7 weeks showed no significant effects of PCC. Future utilization of PCC in this region will require further research based on longterm investigations of possible effects of PCC on soil chemical characteristics and plant growth under field conditions
Submillimeter galaxies behind the Bullet Cluster (1E 0657-56)
Clusters of galaxies are effective gravitational lenses able to magnify
background galaxies and making it possible to probe the fainter part of the
galaxy population. Submillimeter galaxies, which are believed to be
star-forming galaxies at typical redshifts of 2 to 3, are a major contaminant
to the extended Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) signal of galaxy clusters. For a proper
quantification of the SZ signal the contribution of submillimeter galaxies
needs to be quantified. The aims of this study are to identify submillimeter
sources in the field of the Bullet Cluster (1E 0657-56), a massive cluster of
galaxies at z~0.3, measure their flux densities at 870 micron, and search for
counterparts at other wavelengths to constrain their properties. We carried out
deep observations of the submillimeter continuum emission at 870 micron using
the Large APEX BOlometer CAmera (LABOCA) on the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment
(APEX) telescope. Several numerical techniques were used to quantify the noise
properties of the data and extract sources. In total, seventeen sources were
found. Thirteen of them lie in the central 10 arcminutes of the map, which has
a pixel sensitivity of 1.2 mJy per 22 arcsec beam. After correction for flux
boosting and gravitational lensing, the number counts are consistent with
published submm measurements. Nine of the sources have infrared counterparts in
Spitzer maps. The strongest submm detection coincides with a source previously
reported at other wavelengths, at an estimated redshift z~2.7. If the submm
flux arises from two images of a galaxy magnified by a total factor of 75, as
models have suggested, its intrinsic flux would be around 0.6 mJy, consistent
with an intrinsic luminosity below 10^12 L_sun.Comment: Accepted by A&A, 15 pages, 11 figure
Immunoassay Urine Drug Testing among Patients Receiving Opioids at a Safety-Net Palliative Medicine Clinic
BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the use of immunoassay urine drug testing of cancer patients in palliative care clinics.
OBJECTIVES: We examined the frequency of immunoassay urine drug test (UDT) abnormalities and the factors associated with aberrancy at a safety-net hospital palliative medicine clinic.
METHODS: A retrospective review of the electronic medical records of consecutive eligible patients seen at the outpatient palliative medicine clinic in a resource-limited safety-net hospital system was conducted between 1 September 2015 and 31 December 2020. We collected longitudinal data on patient demographics, UDT findings, and potential predictors of aberrant results.
RESULTS: Of the 913 patients in the study, 500 (55%) underwent UDT testing, with 455 (50%) having the testing within the first three visits. Among those tested within the first three visits, 125 (27%) had aberrant UDT results; 44 (35%) of these 125 patients were positive for cocaine. In a multivariable regression model analysis of predictors for aberrant UDT within the first three visits, non-Hispanic White race (odds ratio (OR) = 2.13; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03-4.38;
CONCLUSION: Despite limitations of immunoassay UDT, it was able to detect aberrant drug-taking behaviors in a significant number of patients seen at a safety-net hospital palliative care clinic, including cocaine use. These findings support universal UDT monitoring and utility of immunoassay-based UDT in resource-limited settings
AKARI and BLAST Observations of the Cassiopeia A Supernova Remnant and Surrounding Interstellar Medium
We use new large area far infrared maps ranging from 65 - 500 microns
obtained with the AKARI and the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter
Telescope (BLAST) missions to characterize the dust emission toward the
Cassiopeia A supernova remnant (SNR). Using the AKARI high resolution data we
find a new "tepid" dust grain population at a temperature of ~35K and with an
estimated mass of 0.06 solar masses. This component is confined to the central
area of the SNR and may represent newly-formed dust in the unshocked supernova
ejecta. While the mass of tepid dust that we measure is insufficient by itself
to account for the dust observed at high redshift, it does constitute an
additional dust population to contribute to those previously reported. We fit
our maps at 65, 90, 140, 250, 350, and 500 microns to obtain maps of the column
density and temperature of "cold" dust (near 16 K) distributed throughout the
region. The large column density of cold dust associated with clouds seen in
molecular emission extends continuously from the surrounding interstellar
medium to project on the SNR, where the foreground component of the clouds is
also detectable through optical, X-ray, and molecular extinction. At the
resolution available here, there is no morphological signature to isolate any
cold dust associated only with the SNR from this confusing interstellar
emission. Our fit also recovers the previously detected "hot" dust in the

Adherence to Opioid Patient Prescriber Agreements at a Safety Net Hospital
Patient prescriber agreements, also known as opioid contracts or opioid treatment agreements, have been recommended as a strategy for mitigating non-medical opioid use (NMOU). The purpose of our study was to characterize the proportion of patients with PPAs, the rate of non-adherence, and clinical predictors for PPA completion and non-adherence. This retrospective study covered consecutive cancer patients seen at a palliative care clinic at a safety net hospital between 1 September 2015 and 31 December 2019. We included patients 18 years or older with cancer diagnoses who received opioids. We collected patient characteristics at consultation and information regarding PPA. The primary purpose was to determine the frequency and predictors of patients with a PPA and non-adherence to PPAs. Descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression models were used for the analysis. The survey covered 905 patients having a mean age of 55 (range 18-93), of whom 474 (52%) were female, 423 (47%) were Hispanic, 603 (67%) were single, and 814 (90%) had advanced cancer. Of patients surveyed, 484 (54%) had a PPA, and 50 (10%) of these did not adhere to their PPA. In multivariable analysis, PPAs were associated with younger age (odds ratio [OR] 1.44
