    Ultrasonic NDT Prototype for the Inspection of Ducted Post Stressing Tendons in Concrete Beams

    There is worldwide concern about concrete bridges which derive their strength from post stressed steel tendons in grouted ducts. Problems arise when grouting has not been carried out properly, since the combination of voided regions and moisture penetration can cause corrosion of the tendon and catastrophic failure of the structure [1]. Post tensioned bridges built during the middle of this century are particularly susceptible and there is a pressing need for a cost effective non destructive means of assessing the condition of the embedded ducts and tendons. In response to this problem, a track mounted ultrasonic scanning system ‘CANDI’ (Cable Analysis by Non Destructive Inspection) is currently under development in UMIST, and this work describes the CANDI prototype and results obtained

    The Nature of Nearby Counterparts to Intermediate Redshift Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies I. Optical/H I Properties and Dynamical Masses

    We present single-dish H I spectra obtained with the Green Bank Telescope, along with optical photometric properties from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, of 20 nearby (D < 70 Mpc) Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies (LCBGs). These ~L*, blue, high surface brightness, starbursting galaxies were selected with the same criteria used to define LCBGs at higher redshifts. We find these galaxies are gas-rich, with M(HI) ranging from 5*10^8 to 8*10^9 M_sun, and M(HI)/L_B ranging from 0.2 to 2 M_sun/L_sun, consistent with a variety of morphological types of galaxies. We find the dynamical masses (measured within R_25) span a wide range, from 3*10^9 to 1*10^11 M_sun. However, at least half have dynamical mass-to-light ratios smaller than nearby galaxies of all Hubble types, as found for LCBGs at intermediate redshifts. By comparing line widths and effective radii with local galaxy populations, we find that LCBGs are consistent with the dynamical mass properties of Magellanic (low luminosity) spirals, and the more massive irregulars and dwarf ellipticals, such as NGC 205.Comment: 33 pages, 8 figures, accepted by Ap

    Antibiotic prescribing in primary care and antimicrobial resistance in patients admitted to hospital with urinary tract infection: a controlled observational pilot study

    There is growing evidence that primary care prescribed antibiotics lead to antibiotic resistance in bacteria causing minor infections or being carried by asymptomatic adults, but little research to date has investigated links between primary care prescribed antibiotics and resistance among more serious infections requiring hospital care. Knowledge of these effects is likely to have a major influence on public expectations for, and primary care use of, antibiotics. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of recruiting symptomatic adult patients admitted to hospital with urinary infections and to link primary and secondary data information to investigate the relationship between primary care prescribed antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance in these patients. A microbiology database search of in patients who had submitted a urine sample identified 740 patients who were potentially eligible to take part in the study. Of these, 262 patients did not meet the eligibility criteria, mainly due to use of a urinary catheter (40%). Two-hundred and forty three patients could not be recruited as the nurse was unable to visit the patients prior to discharge, as they were too unwell. Eighty patients provided complete information. Results indicate that there is evidence that prior antibiotic use is associated with resistant infections in hospital patients. A fully powered study, conducted using routinely collected data is proposed to fully clarify the precision of the association

    Exposure of human renal proximal tubular cells to glucose leads to accumutation of type IV collagen and fibronectin by decreased degradation. Thickening and reduplication of the tubular basement membrane has been reported as an early event in diabetic nephropathy. In the current study we examined the effects of elevated D-glucose concentrations on human proximal tubular (HPTC) type IV collagen and fibronectin turnover. Incubation of confluent growth arrested HPTC with 25mM D-glucose led to accumulation of both type IV collagen and fibronectin. This effect was maximal at 48 hours and represented a sevenfold increase for fibronectin (N = 4, P = 0.04), and a threefold increase for type IV collagen (N = 3, P = 0.03) over cells exposed to 5mM D-glucose controls. This increase was not dependent on new gene transcription for either protein. Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP 1 + TIMP 2) were induced following addition of 25mM D-glucose, but not when cells were exposed to 5mM D-glucose. Twenty-four hours after the addition of 25mM D-glucose there was an eightfold increase in TIMP 1 (P = 0.009, N = 4), and a tenfold increase in TIMP 2 levels (P = 0.003, N = 4), over the control values for both inhibitors. The increase in both TIMP 1 and TIMP 2 in response to 25mM D-glucose was abrogated in a dose dependent manner by the aldose reductase inhibitor sorbinil. Gelatin-substrate gel zymography showed increased activity of gelatinase A, but not of gelatinase B in response to the addition of 25mM D-glucose to HPTC. The induction of gelatinase A was accompanied by increased gelatinase A mRNA expression, which was inhibited both by protein kinase C (PKC) depletion using PMA pre-treatment, and by the addition of a PKC inhibitor. These data demonstrate that the glucose-induced accumulation of type IV collagen and fibronectin is unrelated to increased gene transcription, but may involve alterations in the degradative pathway of these basement membrane constituents. Furthermore, the data demonstrate that glucose may simultaneously activate two intracellular pathways (the polyol pathway and a PKC dependent activation pathway), which are involved in mediating separate, complementary effects on cell function

    Biomechanical Evaluation of fracture Fixation Constructs using a Variable-angle Locked Periprosthetic Femur Plate System

    BackgroundIn the United States there are more than 230,000 total hip replacements annually, and periprosthetic femoral fractures occur in 0.1–4.5% of those patients. The majority of these fractures occur at the tip of the stem (Vancouver type B1). The purpose of this study was to compare the biomechanically stability and strength of three fixation constructs and identify the most desirable construct.MethodsFifteen medium adult synthetic femurs were implanted with a hip prosthesis and were osteotomized in an oblique plane at the level of the implant tip to simulate a Vancouver type B1 periprosthetic fracture. Fractures were fixed with a non-contact bridging periprosthetic proximal femur plate (Zimmer, Inc., Warsaw, IN). Three proximal fixation methods were used: Group 1, bicortical screws; Group 2, unicortical screws and one cerclage cable; and Group 3, three cerclage cables. Distally, all groups had bicortical screws. Biomechanical testing was performed using an axial-torsional testing machine in three different loading modalities (axial compression, lateral bending, and torsional/sagittal bending), next in axial cyclic loading to 10,000 cycles, again in the three loading modalities, and finally to failure in torsional/sagittal bending.ResultsGroup 1 had significantly greater load to failure and was significantly stiffer in torsional/sagittal bending than Groups 2 and 3. After cyclic loading, Group 2 had significantly greater axial stiffness than Groups 1 and 3. There was no difference between the three groups in lateral bending stiffness. The average energy absorbed during cyclic loading was significantly lower in Group 2 than in Groups 1 and 3.ConclusionsBicortical screw placement achieved the highest load to failure and the highest torsional/sagittal bending stiffness. Additional unicortical screws improved axial stiffness when using cable fixation. Lateral bending was not influenced by differences in proximal fixation.Clinical RelevanceTo treat periprosthetic fractures, bicortical screw placement should be attempted to maximize load to failure and torsional/sagittal bending stiffness

    Characterization of thermal effects in the Enhanced LIGO Input Optics

    We present the design and performance of the LIGO Input Optics subsystem as implemented for the sixth science run of the LIGO interferometers. The Initial LIGO Input Optics experienced thermal side effects when operating with 7 W input power. We designed, built, and implemented improved versions of the Input Optics for Enhanced LIGO, an incremental upgrade to the Initial LIGO interferometers, designed to run with 30 W input power. At four times the power of Initial LIGO, the Enhanced LIGO Input Optics demonstrated improved performance including better optical isolation, less thermal drift, minimal thermal lensing and higher optical efficiency. The success of the Input Optics design fosters confidence for its ability to perform well in Advanced LIGO

    Estimating oceanic primary production using vertical irradiance and chlorophyll profiles from ocean gliders in the North Atlantic

    An autonomous underwater vehicle (Seaglider) has been used to estimate marine primary production (PP) using a combination of irradiance and fluorescence vertical profiles. This method provides estimates for depth-resolved and temporally evolving PP on fine spatial scales in the absence of ship-based calibrations. We describe techniques to correct for known issues associated with long autonomous deployments such as sensor calibration drift and fluorescence quenching. Comparisons were made between the Seaglider, stable isotope (13C), and satellite estimates of PP. The Seaglider-based PP estimates were comparable to both satellite estimates and stable isotope measurements

    Wittgenstein's Thought Experiments and Relativity Theory

    In this paper, I discuss the similarity between Wittgenstein’s use of thought experiments and Relativity Theory. I begin with introducing Wittgenstein’s idea of “thought experiments” and a tentative classification of different kinds of thought experiments in Wittgenstein’s work. Then, after presenting a short recap of some remarks on the analogy between Wittgenstein’s point of view and Einstein’s, I suggest three analogies between the status of Wittgenstein’s mental experiments and Relativity theory: the topics of time dilation, the search for invariants, and the role of measuring tools in Special Relativity. This last point will help to better define Wittgenstein’s idea of description as the core of his philosophical enterprise
