Considerations on bubble fragmentation models

n this paper we describe the restrictions that the probability density function (p.d.f.) of the size of particles resulting from the rupture of a drop or bubble must satisfy. Using conservation of volume, we show that when a particle of diameter, D0, breaks into exactly two fragments of sizes D and D2 = (D30−D3)1/3 respectively, the resulting p.d.f., f(D; D0), must satisfy a symmetry relation given by D22 f(D; D0) = D2 f(D2; D0), which does not depend on the nature of the underlying fragmentation process. In general, for an arbitrary number of resulting particles, m(D0), we determine that the daughter p.d.f. should satisfy the conservation of volume condition given by m(D0) ∫0D0 (D/D0)3 f(D; D0) dD = 1. A detailed analysis of some contemporary fragmentation models shows that they may not exhibit the required conservation of volume condition if they are not adequately formulated. Furthermore, we also analyse several models proposed in the literature for the breakup frequency of drops or bubbles based on different principles, g(ϵ, D0). Although, most of the models are formulated in terms of the particle size D0 and the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy, ϵ, and apparently provide different results, we show here that they are nearly identical when expressed in dimensionless form in terms of the Weber number, g*(Wet) = g(ϵ, D0) D2/30 ϵ−1/3, with Wet ~ ρ ϵ2/3 D05/3/σ, where ρ is the density of the continuous phase and σ the surface tension

This paper analyzes the autobiographical documentaries My Survival as an Aboriginal (1978) and My life as I live it (1993), by Essie Coffey. We aim to localize Coffey’s work historiographically and theoretically in relation to American, European, Australian and Latin American documentary traditions, pointing out aspects of racial and gender identity and class alterity. A cluster-randomised controlled trial of values-based training to promote autonomously held recovery values in mental health workers

The implementation and use of evidence-based practices is a key priority for recovery-oriented mental health service provision. Training and development programmes for employees continue to be a key method of knowledge and skill development, despite acknowledged difficulties with uptake and maintenance of behaviour change. Self-determination theory suggests that autonomy, or a sense that behaviour is self-generated, is a key motivator to sustained behaviour change, in this case practices in mental health services. This study examined the utility of values-focused staff intervention as a specific, reproducible method of autonomy support

Estimating exclusion: a tool to help designers

An exclusion audit assesses how inclusive a product or service is. This is useful for comparing designs and identifying points for improvement. In an exclusion audit, the designer or usability expert identifies the demands a product places on the user‟s capabilities and enters these into an exclusion calculator. This software then estimates the proportion of the adult British population who would be excluded from using the product because their capabilities do not meet these demands. This paper describes research on improving the exclusion calculator based on a recent reanalysis of the calculator‟s underlying dataset. This enabled the capabilities to be broken down into more specific sub-categories or “demand types”. An experiment investigated the use of these demand types in the context of an exclusion audit. It found that participants could determine the demand type of an action consistently, in the majority of cases. This approach was adopted in a redesign of the calculator, described in this paper

Crystal structure of Spa40, the specificity switch for the Shigella flexneri type III secretion system

The pathogenic bacterium Shigella flexneri uses a type III secretion system to inject virulence factors from the bacterial cytosol directly into host cells. The machinery that identifies secretion substrates and controls the export of extracellular components and effector proteins consists of several inner-membrane and cytoplasmic proteins. One of the inner membrane components, Spa40, belongs to a family of proteins proposed to regulate the switching of substrate specificity of the export apparatus. We show that Spa40 is cleaved within the strictly conserved amino acid sequence NPTH and substitution of the proposed autocatalytic residue abolishes cleavage. Here we also report the crystal structure of the cytoplasmic complex Spa40C and compare it with the recent structures of the homologues from Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium. These structures reveal the tight association of the cleaved fragments and show that the conserved NPTH sequence lies on a loop which, when cleaved, swings away from the catalytic N257 residue, resulting in different surface features in this region. This structural rearrangement suggests a mechanism by which non-cleaving forms of these proteins interfere with correct substrate switching of the apparatus

The Transcriptome of Human Endometrial Mesenchymal Stem Cells Under TGFβR Inhibition Reveals Improved Potential for Cell-Based Therapies

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells with favorable properties for cell therapies and regenerative medicine. Human endometrium harbors a small population of perivascular, clonogenic MSCs (eMSCs) identified by the SUSD2 marker. As for other MSCs, eMSCs require extensive in vitro expansion to generate clinically relevant numbers of cells, resulting in spontaneous differentiation, replicative senescence and cell death, decreasing therapeutic potency. We previously demonstrated that A83-01, a TGF-β receptor inhibitor, maintained eMSC clonogenicity, promoted proliferation, prevented apoptosis and maintained MSC function in vitro. Here we compare the transcriptome of passaged eMSCs from six women cultured with and without A83-01 for 7 days. We identified 1206 differentially expressed genes (DEG) using a false discovery rate cut-off at 0.01 and fold change >2. Significant enrichment of genes involved in anti-inflammatory responses, angiogenesis, cell migration and proliferation, and collagen fibril and extracellular matrix organization were revealed. TGF-β, Wnt and Akt signaling pathways were decreased. Anti-fibrotic and anti-apoptotic genes were induced, and fibroblast proliferation and myofibroblast related genes were downregulated. We found increased MSC potency genes (TWIST1, TWIST2, JAG1, LIFR, and SLIT2) validating the enhanced potency of A83-01-treated eMSCs, and importantly no pluripotency gene expression. We also identified eMSCs’ potential for secreting exosomes, possibly explaining their paracrine properties. Angiogenic and cytokine protein arrays confirmed the angiogenic, anti-fibrotic and immunomodulatory phenotype of A83-01-treated eMSCs, and increased angiogenic activity was functionally demonstrated in vitro. eMSCs culture expanded with A83-01 have enhanced clinically relevant properties, suggesting their potential for cell-therapies and regenerative medicine applications

Parallel processes in clinical supervision: Implications for coaching mental health practitioners

This paper outlines the potential of parallel processes to enhance experiential learning opportunities in coaching for mental health practitioners. Traditional views of parallel processes in clinical supervision are examined in relation to how they can be applied to enhance coaching mental health practitioners. For example, parallel relationship patterns refer to repetitive interpersonal relationship patterns that are transferred from client interactions with mental health practitioners into the coaching sessions for these mental health practitioners. In addition, experiential learning strategies that utilize parallel process concepts might include the use of equivalent protocols for staff development coaching as are used by mental health practitioners in their work with clients experiencing mental health problems. Two coaching approaches (skills acquisition and transformational coaching) to support the implementation and use of a practice model for mental health staff and clients are presented to exemplify the potential advantages of purposeful use of parallel processing in coaching mental health practitioners
