I have jotted down a few habits that I am afraid labor and management negotiators sometimes are found guilty of which do not make for good relationships in negotiations, nor result in a good practical contract

Predicted Secondary Current Distributions for Linear Kinetics in a Modified Three-Dimensional Hull Cell

    Get PDF
Current density distribution is an important considerationfor those involved in designing electrochemical systemsand electroplating systems in particular. Although itis important, the common practice in industry is to usetrial and error to determine designs that optimize currentdensity distributions in electroplating. The purpose of thispaper is to illustrate the use of the finite element method(FEM) to predict three-dimensional current density distributions

Video Altimeter and Obstruction Detector for an Aircraft

    Get PDF
Video-based altimetric and obstruction detection systems for aircraft have been partially developed. The hardware of a system of this type includes a downward-looking video camera, a video digitizer, a Global Positioning System receiver or other means of measuring the aircraft velocity relative to the ground, a gyroscope based or other attitude-determination subsystem, and a computer running altimetric and/or obstruction-detection software. From the digitized video data, the altimetric software computes the pixel velocity in an appropriate part of the video image and the corresponding angular relative motion of the ground within the field of view of the camera. Then by use of trigonometric relationships among the aircraft velocity, the attitude of the camera, the angular relative motion, and the altitude, the software computes the altitude. The obstruction-detection software performs somewhat similar calculations as part of a larger task in which it uses the pixel velocity data from the entire video image to compute a depth map, which can be correlated with a terrain map, showing locations of potential obstructions. The depth map can be used as real-time hazard display and/or to update an obstruction database

Recommendations for Practitioners Engaged in Antitrafficking Task Forces: An Evalaution of the Enhanced Collaborative Model Task Forces to Combat Human Trafficking

    Get PDF
The Enhanced Collaborative Model (ECM) Task Force to Combat Human Trafficking Program funded task forces comprised of law enforcement officials, prosecutors, victim service providers, and other stakeholders at the local, state, and federal levels. This brief details recommendations from the Urban Institute's 10-site evaluation of ECM task forces across the United States. Recommendations were derived from the findings of our analysis and directly from task force stakeholders' responses to interview questions about task force recommendations and best practices. Respondents summarized recommendations across four categories including structure, operation, and funding of ECM task forces; collaboration among stakeholders; survivor engagement and service provision; and task force training, focus, and activities

Excitation and Disruption of a Giant Molecular Cloud by the Supernova Remnant 3C391

Using the IRAM 30-m telescope, we observed the supernova remnant 3C 391 (G31.9+0.0) and its surroundings in the CO(2-1), HCO+(1-0), CS(2-1), CS(3-2), and CS(5-4) lines. The ambient molecular gas at the distance (9 kpc) of the remnant comprises a giant molecular cloud whose edge is closely parallel to a ridge of bright non-thermal radio continuum, which evidently delineates the blast-wave into the cloud. We found that in a small (0.6 pc) portion of the radio shell, the molecular line profiles consist of a narrow (2 km/s) component, plus a very wide (> 20 km/s) component. Both spectral components peak within 20" of a previously-detected OH 1720 MHz maser. We name this source 3C 391:BML (broad molecular line); it provides a new laboratory, similar to IC 443 but on a larger scale, to study shock interactions with dense molecular gas. The wide spectral component is relatively brighter in the higher-excitation lines. We interpret the wide spectral component as post-shock gas, either smoothly accelerated or partially dissociated and reformed behind the shock. The narrow component is either the pre-shock gas or cold gas reformed behind a fully dissociative shock. Using the 3 observed CS lines, we measured the temperature, CS column density, and H2 volume density in a dense clump in the parent molecular cloud as well as the wide-line and narrow-line portions of the shocked clump. The physical conditions of the narrow-line gas are comparable to the highest-density clumps in the giant molecular cloud, while the wide-line gas is both warmer and denser. The mass of compressed gas in 3C 391:BML is high enough that its self-gravity is significant, and eventually it could form one or several stars
