Clues to Quasar Broad Line Region Geometry and Kinematics
We present evidence that the high-velocity CIV lambda 1549 emission line gas
of radio-loud quasars may originate in a disk-like configuration, in close
proximity to the accretion disk often assumed to emit the low-ionization lines.
For a sample of 36 radio-loud z~2 quasars we find the 20--30% peak width to
show significant inverse correlations with the fractional radio core-flux
density, R, the radio axis inclination indicator. Highly inclined systems have
broader line wings, consistent with a high-velocity field perpendicular to the
radio axis. By contrast, the narrow line-core shows no such relation with R, so
the lowest velocity CIV-emitting gas has an inclination independent velocity
field. We propose that this low-velocity gas is located at higher
disk-altitudes than the high-velocity gas. A planar origin of the high-velocity
CIV-emission is consistent with the current results and with an accretion
disk-wind emitting the broad lines. A spherical distribution of randomly
orbiting broad-line clouds and a polar high-ionization outflow are ruled out.Comment: 5 Latex pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
The Effect of Motivational Highlight DVDs on State Self-Confidence in Elite Female Hockey Players
Formal coach education programmes, driven by the national governing bodies of individual sports, have for many years been regarded as essential in the development of competent, qualified coaches. However, more recent opinion suggests that such coach education is actually ‘‘low impact’’ in comparison to the hours individual aspirant coach’s spend coaching, being coached or participating (Rossi & Cassidy, 1999: Learning and teaching in physical education. London: Falmer). It appears the literature is, in part, implying that experiential learning has greater significance over formal education programmes. The aim of this study was to investigate the educational journey of a sample of paddlesport coaches by addressing why coaches chose to enter formal coach education programmes
Quasar x-ray spectra revisited
A sample of 45 quasars observed by the Imaging Proportional Counter (IPC) on the Einstein satellite is used to re-examine the relationship between the soft (0.2-3.5 keV) X-ray energy index and radio-loudness. We found the following: (1) the tendency for radio-loud quasars to have systematically flatter X-ray slopes than radio-quiet quasars (RQQ's) is confirmed with the soft X-ray excess having negligible effect; (2) there is a tendency for the flatness of the X-ray slope to correlate with radio core-dominance for radio-loud quasars, suggesting that a component of the X-ray emission is relativistically beamed; (3) for the RQQ's the soft X-ray slopes, with a mean of approximately 1.0, are consistent with the slopes found at higher energies (2-10 keV) although steeper than those observed for Seyfert 1 galaxies (also 2-10 keV) where the reflection model gives a good fit to the data; (4) the correlation of FeII emission line strength with X-ray energy index is confirmed for radio-quiet quasars using a subset of 18 quasars. The radio-loud quasars show no evidence for a correlation. This relation suggests a connection between the ionizing continuum and the line emission from the broad emission line region (BELR) of radio-quiet quasars, but in the opposite sense to that predicted by current photoionization models; and (5) the correlations of X-ray slope with radio core dominance and FeII equivalent width within the radio-loud and radio-quiet sub-classes respectively imply that the observed wide range of X-ray spectral slopes is real rather than due to the large measuring uncertainties for individual objects
International electricity prices and regulation
This thesis is a study of the international electricity industry and in particular its
pricing and regulation. As an industry, electricity is characterised by its monopolistic
tendencies and prominent government involvement. [Continues.
The Case for Optically-Thick High Velocity Broad Line Region Gas in Active Galactic Nuclei
A combined analysis of the profiles of the main broad quasar emission lines
in both Hubble Space Telescope and optical spectra shows that while the
profiles of the strong UV lines are quite similar, there is frequently a strong
increase in the Ly-alpha/H-alpha ratio in the high-velocity gas. We show that
the suggestion that the high velocity gas is optically-thin presents many
problems. We show that the relative strengths of the high velocity wings arise
naturally in an optically-thick BLR component. An optically-thick model
successfully explains the equivalent widths of the lines, the Ly-alpha/H-alpha
ratios and flatter Balmer decrements in the line wings, the strengths of CIII]
and the lambda 1400 blend, and the strong variability of high-velocity,
high-ionization lines (especially HeII and HeI).Comment: 34 pages in AASTeX, including 10 pages of figures. Submitted to

Stability, reliability and cross-mode correlations of tests in a recommended 8-minute performance assessment battery
A need exists for an automated performance test system to study drugs, agents, treatments, and stresses of interest to the aviation, space, and environmental medical community. The purpose of this present study is to evaluate tests for inclusion in the NASA-sponsored Automated Performance Test System (APTS). Twenty-one subjects were tested over 10 replications with tests previously identified as good candidates for repeated-measure research. The tests were concurrently administered in paper-and-pencil and microcomputer modes. Performance scores for the two modes were compared. Data from trials 1 to 10 were examined for indications of test stability and reliability. Nine of the ten APT system tests achieved stability. Reliabilities were generally high. Cross-correlation of microbased tests with traditional paper-and-pencil versions revealed similarity of content within tests in the different modes, and implied at least three cognition and two motor factors. This protable, inexpensive, rugged, computerized battery of tests is recommended for use in repeated-measures studies of environmental and drug effects on performance. Identification of other tests compatible with microcomputer testing and potentially capable of tapping previously unidentified factors is recommended. Documentation of APTS sensitivity to environmental agents is available for more than a dozen facilities and is reported briefly. Continuation of such validation remains critical in establishing the efficacy of APTS tests
Spectral Properties From Lyman-alpha to H-alpha For An Essentially Complete Sample of Quasars I: Data
We have obtained quasi-simultaneous ultraviolet-optical spectra for 22 out of
23 quasars in the complete PG-X-ray sample with redshift, z<0.4, and M_B<-23.
The spectra cover rest-frame wavelengths from at least Lyman-alpha to H-alpha.
Here we provide a detailed description of the data, including careful
spectrophotometry and redshift determination. We also present direct
measurements of the continua, strong emission lines and features, including
Lyman-alpha, SiIV+OIV], CIV, CIII], SiIII], MgII, H-beta, [OIII],
He5876+NaI5890,5896, H-alpha, and blended iron emission in the UV and optical.
The widths, asymmetries and velocity shifts of profiles of strong emission
lines show that CIV and Lyman-alpha are very different from H-beta and H-alpha.
This suggests that the motion of the broad line region is related to the
ionization structure, but the data appears not agree with the radially
stratified ionization structure supported by reverberation mapping studies, and
therefore suggest that outflows contribute additional velocity components to
the broad emission line profiles.Comment: 42 pages, 10 figures, 13 tables. Accepted by AJ. Supplemental figures

FMBEM analysis of sound scattering from a damping plate in the near field of a hydrophone.
As part of research into the effect of underwater noise on the communication between an under-ice Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) and it’s stationary launch vessel (the Aurora Australis), fast multipole boundary element method (FMBEM) acoustic modeling was conducted. In particular, a steel damping plate with a complex 3-dimensional structure was modeled (using up to 1.6 x 10 5 boundary elements) and the effect of sound scattering from a pinger near the ship was determined at the receiver hydrophone, which was in close proximity to the damping plate. The direct incident field from the pinger was modeled as a plane wave at a number of incidence angles (to account for the depths to which the hydrophone was lowered) and over a range of frequencies up to the pinger frequency of 10kHz. This paper presents these results and discusses some of the interesting effects observed at the ‘non-unique’ frequencies when using the different methods available to provide stability to the numerical solution. Thus far, the modeling conducted for the damping plate has treated the object as rigid. The FMBEM code being developed at CMST now has the capability to model fully coupled fluid-structure interactions and some initial results from treating the damping plate as elastic are also presented
