Taxing investments in the Asia-Pacific region : the importance of cross-border taxation and tax incentives
This paper investigates the taxation of investments in the Asia-Pacific region. Our analysis is based on
the methodology of Devereux and Griffith (1999, 2003) for determining effective average tax rates.
This approach allows us to account for important national and international tax regulations. Our results
show that the overall dispersion of effective tax burdens in Asia-Pacific ranges from 10.6% in Hong
Kong to 40.4% in India for domestic investments (overall average of 23.4%). In 8 out of 19
jurisdictions covered, investments are, however, effectively taxed at a rate between 20% and 25%. If
the investment is made by a foreign investor, cross-border taxation has a significant impact on the
overall tax burden. In any of the Asia-Pacific jurisdictions, foreign direct investments by a
Singaporean or a German parent company are on average taxed at 29.2% and at 32.8% in case of a US
investor. Meanwhile, tax incentives for the stimulation of private investment reduce the effective
average tax rate by 8.6 percentage points on average. Fiscal incentives targeted at investments in the
high technology sector or the development of specific geographic areas result in the lowest effective tax burdens
Brand Meaning and Virtual Brand Community Amongst Teenagers: A Study of the IPod Brand
Research on symbolic brand meaning and brand community has so far been limited to the adult population. No research has been conducted concerning the existence or characteristics of brand community amongst the adolescent population. Moreover, very little is known about virtual communities, and research on virtual brand communities of adolescents remains nonexistent to this day. Given the positive implications of brand meaning and brand community to the marketer, and the increasing economic importance of teenagers, these are significant gaps in literature.
This paper fills those research gaps by conducting an adolescent consumer study on the IPod brand. Apart form proving new insight into virtual brand community, and consumption meanings the research furthermore addresses the lack of research into the internet experiences and self-brand connections of adolescents.
Using netnography, a brand new research technique, twelve key components of virtual brand community among adolescents could be established. The first three consist of the three core components of brand community as conceptualized by Muniz and O'Guinn (2001); 1. consciousness of kind, 2. shared rituals, traditions and symbols, and 3. moral responsibility. The other nine components were identified by the research and include 4. engagement in discussing brands in a virtual environment, 5. symbolic meanings and linking values, 6. tolerance for brand failure, 7. criticism towards the brands management, 8. converting IPod arguments towards Apple, 9. the quest for individualism, 10. dealing with opposition towards the brand, 11. image concerns and 12. personification of the brand. The findings of the study have very important and interesting implications for marketers, particularly for those targeting adolescents
No association between major depression with and without childhood adversity and the stress hormone copeptin
Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) are associated with an increased risk of major depressive disorder (MDD) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation. Within the HPA axis, corticotropin-releasing hormone and vasopressin (AVP) synergistically stimulate the release of adrenocorticotropic hormone, which promotes cortisol release. The cleavage product copeptin is produced during AVP synthesis and is a surrogate marker of AVP release. Children with ACE and young adults with depressive symptoms have higher levels of copeptin than healthy controls. Objective: To uncover the effects of MDD and ACE on copeptin levels in adult females. Methods: We recruited 94 women (mean age: 34.0 +/- 3.6 years): 23 with MDD and ACE, 24 with MDD without ACE, 22 with ACE without MDD, and 25 healthy controls. ACE was defined as repeated sexual or physical abuse at least once a month over at least one year before the age of 18 years. MDD was defined by the DSM-IV criteria. Copeptin plasma levels were measured with an immunoluminometric assay. Results: The four groups did not differ in demographic variables. We found a significant negative correlation between body mass index (BMI) and copeptin plasma levels (r = -.21; p = .045). Copeptin plasma levels did not differ between the four groups after controlling for BMI. Conclusion: Neither MDD nor ACE was associated with altered plasma copeptin levels. Thus, copeptin does not seem to play a major role in MDD and ACE in adult females
Unified prebiotically plausible synthesis of pyrimidine and purine RNA ribonucleotides
Theories about the origin of life require chemical pathways that allow formation of lifeâs key building blocks under prebiotically plausible conditions. Complex molecules like RNA must have originated from small molecules whose reactivity was guided by physico-chemical processes. RNA is constructed from purine and pyrimidine nucleosides, both of which are required for accurate information transfer. This is the prerequisite for Darwinian evolution. While separate pathways to purines and pyrimidines have been reported, their concurrent syntheses remain a challenge. We report the synthesis of the pyrimidine nucleosides from small molecules and ribose, driven solely by wet-dry cycles. In the presence of phosphate-containing minerals, 5â-mono- and di-phosphates also form selectively in one-pot. The pathway is compatible with purine synthesis, allowing the concurrent formation of all Watson-Crick bases
Structural Basis of Membrane Protein Chaperoning through the Mitochondrial Intermembrane Space
International audienceThe exchange of metabolites between the mitochon- drial matrix and the cytosol depends on b-barrel channels in the outer membrane and a-helical carrier proteins in the inner membrane. The essential trans- locase of the inner membrane (TIM) chaperones escort these proteins through the intermembrane space, but the structural and mechanistic details remain elusive. We have used an integrated struc- tural biology approach to reveal the functional princi- ple of TIM chaperones. Multiple clamp-like binding sites hold the mitochondrial membrane proteins in a translocation-competent elongated form, thus mimicking characteristics of co-translational mem- brane insertion. The bound preprotein undergoes conformational dynamics within the chaperone bind- ing clefts, pointing to a multitude of dynamic local binding events. Mutations in these binding sites cause cell death or growth defects associated with impairment of carrier and b-barrel protein biogen- esis. Our work reveals how a single mitochondrial ââtransfer-chaperoneââ system is able to guide a-heli- cal and b-barrel membrane proteins in a âânascent chain-likeââ conformation through a ribosome-free compartment
Bacterial porin disrupts mitochondrial membrane potential and sensitizes host cells to apoptosis
The bacterial PorB porin, an ATP-binding beta-barrel protein of pathogenic Neisseria gonorrhoeae, triggers host cell apoptosis by an unknown mechanism. PorB is targeted to and imported by host cell mitochondria, causing the breakdown of the mitochondrial membrane potential (delta psi m). Here, we show that PorB induces the condensation of the mitochondrial matrix and the loss of cristae structures, sensitizing cells to the induction of apoptosis via signaling pathways activated by BH3-only proteins. PorB is imported into mitochondria through the general translocase TOM but, unexpectedly, is not recognized by the SAM sorting machinery, usually required for the assembly of beta-barrel proteins in the mitochondrial outer membrane. PorB integrates into the mitochondrial inner membrane, leading to the breakdown of delta psi m. The PorB channel is regulated by nucleotides and an isogenic PorB mutant defective in ATP-binding failed to induce delta psi m loss and apoptosis, demonstrating that dissipation of delta psi m is a requirement for cell death caused by neisserial infection
Socio-economic inequalities in body mass index among preschool children: do sports programs in early childhood education and care centers make a difference?
Background
Overweight in childhood is considered to be one of the most serious public health challenges. Many studies have investigated individual-level determinants of children's body mass index (BMI), yet studies exploring determinants at the meso-level are sparse. The aim of our study was to examine how a sports focus at early childhood education and care (ECEC) centers moderates the effect of parental socio-economic position (SEP) on children's BMI.
Methods
We used data from the German National Educational Panel Study and included 1,891 children (955 boys and 936 girls) from 224 ECEC centers in our analysis. Linear multilevel regressions were used to estimate the main effects of family SEP and the ECEC center sports focus, as well as their interaction, on children's BMI. All analyses were stratified by sex and adjusted for age, migration background, number of siblings, and employment status of parents.
Results
Our analysis confirmed the wellknown health inequalities in childhood overweight with a social gradient toward a higher BMI for children from lower SEP families. An interactive effect between family SEP and ECEC center sports focus was found. Boys with low family SEP not attending a sports-focused ECEC center had the highest BMI among all boys. In contrast, boys with low family SEP attending a sports-focused ECEC center had the lowest BMI. For girls, no association regarding ECEC center focus or interactive effects emerged. Girls with a high SEP had the lowest BMI, independent of the ECEC center focus.
Conclusion
We provided evidence for the gender-specific relevance of sports-focused ECEC centers for the prevention of overweight. Especially boys from low SEP families benefited from a sports focus, whereas for girls the family's SEP was more relevant. As a consequence, gender differences in determinants for BMI at different levels and their interaction should be considered in further research and preventive measures. Our research indicates that ECEC centers may decrease health inequalities by providing opportunities for physical activity.

Associations of individual factors and early childhood education and care (ECEC) centres characteristics with preschoolersâ BMI in Germany
Background
The number of obese children is rising worldwide. Many studies have investigated single determinants of childrenâs body mass index (BMI), yet studies measuring determinants at different potential levels of influence are sparse. The aim of this study is to investigate the independent role of parental socioeconomic position (SEP), additional family factors at the micro level, as well as early childhood education and care (ECEC) centre characteristics at the meso level regarding BMI.
Methods
Analyses used the baseline data of the PReschool INtervention Study (PRINS) including up to 1,151 children from 53 ECEC centres. Multi-level models first estimated the associations of parental SEP indicators (parental school education, vocational training, and household income) with the childrenâs standard deviation scores for BMI (SDS BMI, standardised for age and gender). Second, structural (number of siblings), psychosocial (strained family relationships), and nutrition behavioural (soft-drink consumption, frequency of fast-food restaurant visits) family factors at the micro level were included. Third, characteristics of the ECEC centre at the meso level in terms of average group size, the ratio of overweight children in the group, ECEC centre type (all-day care), and the location of the ECEC centre (rural vs urban) were included. All analyses were stratified by gender and adjusted for age, migration background, and parental employment status.
Results
Estimates for boys and girls appeared to differ. In the full model, for boys the parental SEP indicators were not related to SDS BMI. Factors related to SDS BMI in boys were: two or more siblings; Bâ=â-.55; pâ=â0.045 [ref.: no sibling]), the characteristics of the ECEC centre in terms of average group size (20 â 25 children; Bâ=â-.54; pâ=â0.022 [ref.:ââ25 children; Bâ=â-.52; pâ=â0.037 [ref.:â<â20 children]) were related to SDS BMI.
Conclusions
The BMI of preschool children appears to be associated with determinants at the micro and meso level, however with some gender differences. The identified factors at the micro and meso level appear largely modifiable and can inform about possible interventions to reduce obesity in preschool children
