Freak Waves in Random Oceanic Sea States
Freak waves are very large, rare events in a random ocean wave train. Here we
study the numerical generation of freak waves in a random sea state
characterized by the JONSWAP power spectrum. We assume, to cubic order in
nonlinearity, that the wave dynamics are governed by the nonlinear Schroedinger
(NLS) equation. We identify two parameters in the power spectrum that control
the nonlinear dynamics: the Phillips parameter and the enhancement
coefficient . We discuss how freak waves in a random sea state are more
likely to occur for large values of and . Our results are
supported by extensive numerical simulations of the NLS equation with random

Metformin for Obesity in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review
OBJECTIVE: To summarize the efficacy of metformin in reducing BMI and cardiometabolic risk in obese children and adolescents without diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Double-blind RCTs of > or =6 months duration in obese subjects age < or =19 years without diabetes were included. Our primary outcomes of interest include changes in BMI and measures of insulin sensitivity. RESULTS: Five trials met inclusion criteria (n = 320 individuals). Compared with placebo, metformin reduced BMI by 1.42 kg/m(2) (95% CI 0.83-2.02) and homeostasis model assessment insulin of resistance (HOMA-IR) score by 2.01 (95% CI 0.75-3.26). CONCLUSIONS: Metformin appears to be moderately efficacious in reducing BMI and insulin resistance in hyperinsulinemic obese children and adolescents in the short term. Larger, longer-term studies in different populations are needed to establish its role in the treatment of overweight children
Gender-specific 30-day outcomes after carotid endarterectomy and carotid artery stenting in the Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular Registry
ObjectiveAlthough the optimal treatment of carotid stenosis remains unclear, available data suggest that women have higher risk of adverse events after carotid revascularization. We used data from the Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular Registry to determine the effect of gender on outcomes after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS).MethodsThere were 9865 patients (40.6% women) who underwent CEA (n = 6492) and CAS (n = 3373). The primary end point was a composite of death, stroke, and myocardial infarction at 30 days.ResultsThere was no difference in age and ethnicity between genders, but men were more likely to be symptomatic (41.6% vs 38.6%; P < .003). There was a higher prevalence of hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in women, whereas men had a higher prevalence of coronary artery disease, history of myocardial infarction, and smoking history. For disease etiology in CAS, restenosis was more common in women (28.7% vs 19.7%; P < .0001), and radiation was higher in men (6.2% vs 2.6%; P < .0001). Comparing by gender, there were no statistically significant differences in the primary end point for CEA (women, 4.07%; men, 4.06%) or CAS (women, 6.69%; men, 6.80%). There remains no difference after stratification by symptomatology and multivariate risk adjustment.ConclusionsIn this large, real-world analysis, women and men demonstrated similar results after CEA or CAS. These data suggest that, contrary to previous reports, women do not have a higher risk of adverse events after carotid revascularization
A common genetic target for environmental and heritable influences on aggressiveness in Drosophila
Environmental and genetic factors can modulate aggressiveness, but the biological mechanisms underlying their influence are largely unknown. Social experience with conspecifics suppresses aggressiveness in both vertebrate and invertebrate species, including Drosophila. We searched for genes whose expression levels correlate with the influence of social experience on aggressiveness in Drosophila by performing microarray analysis of head tissue from socially isolated (aggressive) vs. socially experienced (nonaggressive) male flies. Among {approx}200 differentially expressed genes, only one was also present in a gene set previously identified by profiling Drosophila strains subjected to genetic selection for differences in aggressiveness [Dierick HA, Greenspan RJ (2006) Nat Genet 38:1023–1031]. This gene, Cyp6a20, encodes a cytochrome P450. Social experience increased Cyp6a20 expression and decreased aggressiveness in a reversible manner. In Cyp6a20 mutants, aggressiveness was increased in group-housed but not socially isolated flies. These data identify a common genetic target for environmental and heritable influences on aggressiveness. Cyp6a20 is expressed in a subset of nonneuronal support cells associated with pheromone-sensing olfactory sensilla, suggesting that social experience may influence aggressiveness by regulating pheromone sensitivity
Argumentation in school science : Breaking the tradition of authoritative exposition through a pedagogy that promotes discussion and reasoning
The value of argumentation in science education has become internationally recognised and has been the subject of many research studies in recent years. Successful introduction of argumentation activities in learning contexts involves extending teaching goals beyond the understanding of facts and concepts, to include an emphasis on cognitive and metacognitive processes, epistemic criteria and reasoning. The authors focus on the difficulties inherent in shifting a tradition of teaching from one dominated by authoritative exposition to one that is more dialogic, involving small-group discussion based on tasks that stimulate argumentation. The paper builds on previous research on enhancing the quality of argument in school science, to focus on how argumentation activities have been designed, with appropriate strategies, resources and modelling, for pedagogical purposes. The paper analyses design frameworks, their contexts and lesson plans, to evaluate their potential for enhancing reasoning through foregrounding the processes of argumentation. Examples of classroom dialogue where teachers adopt the frameworks/plans are analysed to show how argumentation processes are scaffolded. The analysis shows that several layers of interpretation are needed and these layers need to be aligned for successful implementation. The analysis serves to highlight the potential and limitations of the design frameworks
Public sector commissioning and the third sector: Old wine in new bottles?
Public sector commissioning has risen rapidly to prominence as the central mechanism for the ‘purchase’ of services in an increasingly mixed economy of public services in the UK and this has wide-ranging consequences for non-state actors including those in the third sector. Academic consideration of commissioning has been rather fragmented, concerned with particular service fields or sectors. This paper provides an overview, with a focus on the relationship between the state and the third sector. The paper begins by questioning whether commissioning is really ‘new’ or a continuation of exist- ing trends around procurement and contracting and whether it constitutes a genuinely transformative relationship between the state and third sector. It considers some core debates about the likely impact of commissioning on the third sector and its relationship with the state. In doing so, the paper advances two main arguments: that commissioning remains highly fragmented in policy and practice, between different localities and scales of government; and that there is a tension within commissioning policy between the ‘rhetoric’ of the ‘full cycle’ approach based on needs assessment and planning, and what appears to be an emerging reality of resource-constrained, large-scale and Payment by Results-based contracting. These raise real concerns for organizational and service quality outcomes
Swift panchromatic observations of the bright gamma-ray burst GRB050525a
The bright gamma-ray burst GRB050525a has been detected with the Swift
observatory, providing unique multiwavelength coverage from the very earliest
phases of the burst. The X-ray and optical/UV afterglow decay light curves both
exhibit a steeper slope ~0.15 days after the burst, indicative of a jet break.
This jet break time combined with the total gamma-ray energy of the burst
constrains the opening angle of the jet to be 3.2 degrees. We derive an
empirical `time-lag' redshift from the BAT data of z_hat = 0.69 +/- 0.02, in
good agreement with the spectroscopic redshift of 0.61.
Prior to the jet break, the X-ray data can be modelled by a simple power law
with index alpha = -1.2. However after 300 s the X-ray flux brightens by about
30% compared to the power-law fit. The optical/UV data have a more complex
decay, with evidence of a rapidly falling reverse shock component that
dominates in the first minute or so, giving way to a flatter forward shock
component at later times.
The multiwavelength X-ray/UV/Optical spectrum of the afterglow shows evidence
for migration of the electron cooling frequency through the optical range
within 25000 s. The measured temporal decay and spectral indices in the X-ray
and optical/UV regimes compare favourably with the standard fireball model for
Gamma-ray bursts assuming expansion into a constant density interstellar

Swift follow-up of unidentified X-ray sources in the XMM-Newton Slew Survey
We present deep Swift follow-up observations of a sample of 94 unidentified
X-ray sources from the XMM-Newton Slew Survey. The X-ray Telescope on-board
Swift detected 29% of the sample sources; the flux limits for undetected
sources suggests the bulk of the Slew Survey sources are drawn from one or more
transient populations. We report revised X-ray positions for the XRT-detected
sources, with typical uncertainties of 2.9", reducing the number of catalogued
optical matches to just a single source in most cases. We characterise the
sources detected by Swift through their X-ray spectra and variability and via
UVOT photometry and catalogued nIR, optical and radio observations. Six sources
can be associated with known objects and 8 may be associated with unidentified
ROSAT sources within the 3-sigma error radii of our revised X-ray positions. We
find 10 of the 30 XRT-detected sources are clearly stellar in nature, including
one periodic variable star and 2 high proper motion stars. For 11 sources we
propose an AGN classification, among which 4 are detected with BAT and 3 have
redshifts spanning z = 0.2 - 0.9 obtained from the literature or from optical
spectroscopy presented here. The 67 Slew Survey sources we do not detect with
Swift are studied via their characteristics in the Slew Survey and by
comparison with the XRT and BAT detected population. We suggest that these are
mostly if not all extragalactic, though unlikely to be highly absorbed sources
in the X-rays such as Compton thick AGN. A large number of these are highly
variable soft X-ray sources. A small fraction of mainly hard-band detections
may be spurious. This follow-up programme brings us a step further to
completing the identifications of a substantial sample of XMM-Newton Slew
Survey sources, important for understanding the nature of the transient sky and
