Development and testing of the Active Temperature, Ozone and Moisture Microwave Spectrometer (ATOMMS) cm and mm wavelength occultation instrument
We present initial results from testing a new remote sensing system called the Active Temperature, Ozone and Moisture Microwave Spectrometer (ATOMMS). ATOMMS is designed as a satellite-to-satellite occultation system for monitoring climate. We are developing the prototype instrument for an aircraft to aircraft occultation demonstration. Here we focus on field testing of the ATOMMS instrument, in particular the remote sensing of water by measuring the attenuation caused by the 22 GHz and 183 GHz water absorption lines.
Our measurements of the 183 GHz line spectrum along an 820 m path revealed that the AM 6.2 spectroscopic model provdes a much better match to the observed spectrum than the MPM93 model. These comparisons also indicate that errors in the ATOMMS amplitude measurements are about 0.3%. Pressure sensitivity bodes well for ATOMMS as a climate instrument. Comparisons with a hygrometer revealed consistency at the 0.05 mb level, which is about 1% of the absolute humidity.
Initial measurements of absorption by the 22 GHz line made along a 5.4 km path between two mountaintops captured a large increase in water vapor similar to that measured by several nearby hygrometers. A storm passage between the two instruments yielded our first measurements of extinction by rain and cloud droplets. Comparisons of ATOMMS 1.5 mm opacity measurements with measured visible opacity and backscatter from a weather radar revealed features simultaneously evident in all three datasets confirming the ATOMMS measurements. The combined ATOMMS, radar and visible information revealed the evolution of rain and cloud amounts along the signal path during the passage of the storm. The derived average cloud water content reached typical continental cloud amounts. These results demonstrated a significant portion of the information content of ATOMMS and its ability to penetrate through clouds and rain which is critical to its all-weather, climate monitoring capability
The narrow, inner CO ring around the magnetic Herbig Ae star, HD 101412
We describe and model emission lines in the first overtone band of CO in the
magnetic Herbig Ae star HD 101412. High-resolution CRIRES spectra reveal
unusually sharp features which suggest the emission is formed in a thin disk
centered at 1 AU with a width 0.32 AU or less. A wider disk will not fit the
observations. Previous observations have reached similar conclusions, but the

Optical spectroscopic variability of Herbig Ae/Be stars
We analysed 337 multi-epoch optical spectra of 38 Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars
to gain insights into the variability behaviour of the circumstellar (CS)
atomic gas. Equivalent widths (EWs) and line fluxes of the Halpha, [OI]6300,
HeI5876 and NaID lines were obtained for each spectrum; the Halpha line width
at 10% of peak intensity (W10) and profile shapes were also measured and
classified. The mean line strengths and relative variabilities were quantified
for each star. Simultaneous optical photometry was used to estimate the line
fluxes.
We present a homogeneous spectroscopic database of HAeBe stars. The lines are
variable in practically all stars and timescales, although 30 % of the objects
show a constant EW in [OI]6300, which is also the only line that shows no
variability on timescales of hours. The HeI5876 and NaID EW relative
variabilities are typically the largest, followed by those in [OI]6300 and
Halpha. The EW changes can be larger than one order of magnitude for the
HeI5876 line, and up to a factor 4 for Halpha. The [OI]6300 and Halpha EW
relative variabilities are correlated for most stars in the sample. The Halpha
mean EW and W10 are uncorrelated, as are their relative variabilities. The
Halpha profile changes in 70 % of the objects. The massive stars in the sample
usually show more stable Halpha profiles with blueshifted self-absorptions and
less variable 10% widths.
Our data suggest multiple causes for the different line variations, but the
[OI]6300 and Halpha variability must share a similar origin in many objects.
The physical mechanism responsible for the Halpha line broadening does not
depend on the amount of emission; unlike in lower-mass stars, physical
properties based on the Halpha luminosity and W10 would significantly differ.
Our results provide additional support to previous works that reported
different physical mechanisms in Herbig Ae and Herbig Be stars.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 2 appendixe

Photometric variability of the Herbig Ae star HD 37806
The more massive counterparts of T Tauri stars, Herbig Ae/Be stars, are known
to vary in a complex way with no variability mechanism clearly identified. We
attempt to characterize the optical variability of HD~37806 (MWC 120) on time
scales ranging between minutes and several years. A continuous, one-minute
resolution, 21 day-long sequence of MOST (Microvariability & Oscillations of
STars) satellite observations has been analyzed using wavelet, scalegram and
dispersion analysis tools. The MOST data have been augmented by sparse
observations over 9 seasons from ASAS (All Sky Automated Survey), by previously
non-analyzed ESO (European Southern Observatory) data partly covering 3 seasons
and by archival measurements dating back half a century ago. Mutually
superimposed flares or accretion instabilities grow in size from about 0.0003
of the mean flux on a time scale of minutes to a peak-to-peak range of <~0.05
on a time scale of a few years. The resulting variability has properties of
stochastic "red" noise, whose self-similar characteristics are very similar to
those observed in cataclysmic binary stars, but with much longer characteristic
time scales of hours to days (rather than minutes) and with amplitudes which
appear to cease growing in size on time scales of tens of years. In addition to
chaotic brightness variations combined with stochastic noise, the MOST data
show a weakly defined cyclic signal with a period of about 1.5 days, which may

A behavioral comparison of male and female adults with high functioning autism spectrum conditions
Autism spectrum conditions (ASC) affect more males than females in the general population. However, within ASC it is unclear if there are phenotypic sex differences. Testing for similarities and differences between the sexes is important not only for clinical assessment but also has implications for theories of typical sex differences and of autism. Using cognitive and behavioral measures, we investigated similarities and differences between the sexes in age- and IQ-matched adults with ASC (high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome). Of the 83 (45 males and 38 females) participants, 62 (33 males and 29 females) met Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) cut-off criteria for autism in childhood and were included in all subsequent analyses. The severity of childhood core autism symptoms did not differ between the sexes. Males and females also did not differ in self-reported empathy, systemizing, anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive traits/symptoms or mentalizing performance. However, adult females with ASC showed more lifetime sensory symptoms (p = 0.036), fewer current socio-communication difficulties (p = 0.001), and more self-reported autistic traits (p = 0.012) than males. In addition, females with ASC who also had developmental language delay had lower current performance IQ than those without developmental language delay (p<0.001), a pattern not seen in males. The absence of typical sex differences in empathizing-systemizing profiles within the autism spectrum confirms a prediction from the extreme male brain theory. Behavioral sex differences within ASC may also reflect different developmental mechanisms between males and females with ASC. We discuss the importance of the superficially better socio-communication ability in adult females with ASC in terms of why females with ASC may more often go under-recognized, and receive their diagnosis later, than males
The relationship between sensory sensitivity and autistic traits in the general population.
Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) tend to have sensory processing difficulties (Baranek et al. in J Child Psychol Psychiatry 47:591–601, 2006). These difficulties include over- and under-responsiveness to sensory stimuli, and problems modulating sensory input (Ben-Sasson et al. in J Autism Dev Disorders 39:1–11, 2009). As those with ASD exist at the extreme end of a continuum of autistic traits that is also evident in the general population, we investigated the link between ASD and sensory sensitivity in the general population by administering two questionnaires online to 212 adult participants. Results showed a highly significant positive correlation (r = .775, p < .001) between number of autistic traits and the frequency of sensory processing problems. These data suggest a strong link between sensory processing and autistic traits in the general population, which in turn potentially implicates sensory processing problems in social interaction difficulties
Successful new product development by optimizing development process effectiveness in highly regulated sectors: the case of the Spanish medical devices sector
Rapid development and commercialization of new products is of vital importance for small and medium sized enterprises (SME) in regulated sectors. Due to strict regulations, competitive advantage can hardly be achieved through the effectiveness of product concepts only. If an SME in a highly regulated sector wants to excell in new product development (NPD) performance, the company should focus on the flexibility, speed, and productivity of its NPD function: i.e. the development process effectiveness. Our main research goals are first to explore if SMEs should focus on their their development process effectiveness rather than on their product concept effectiveness to achieve high NPD performance; and second, to explore whether a shared pattern in the organization of the NPD function can be recognized to affect NPD performance positively. The medical devices sector in Spain is used as an example of a\ud
highly regulated sector. A structured survey among 11 SMEs, of which 2 were studied also as in in-depth case studies, led to the following results. First of all, indeed the companies in the dataset which focused on the effectiveness of their development process, stood out in NPD performance. Further, the higher performing companies did have a number of commonalities in the organisation of their NPD function: 1) The majority of the higher performing firms had an NPD strategy characterized by a predominantly incremental project portfolio.\ud
2) a) Successful firms with an incremental project portfolio combined this with a functional team structure b) Successful firms with a radical project portfolio combined this with a heavyweight or autonomous team structure.\ud
3) A negative reciprocal relationship exists between formalization of the NPD processes and the climate of the NPD function, in that a formalized NPD process and an innovative climate do not seem to reinforce each other. Innovative climate combined with an informal NPD process does however contribute positively to NPD performance. This effect was stronger in combination with a radical project portfolio. The highest NPD performance was measured for companies focusing mainly on incremental innovation. It is argued that in highly regulated sectors, companies with an incremental product portfolio would benefit from employing a functional structure. Those companies who choose for a more radical project portfolio in highly regulated sectors should be aware\ud
that they are likely to excell only in the longer term by focusing on strategic flexibility. In their NPD organization, they might be well advised to combine informal innovation processes with an innovative climate
Development of the EORTC QLQ-CAX24, a questionnaire for cancer patients with cachexia
Context Cachexia is commonly found in cancer patients and has profound consequences; yet there is only one questionnaire that examines the patient's perspective. Objective To report a rigorously developed module for patient self-reported impact of cancer cachexia. Methods Module development followed published guidelines. Patients from across the cancer cachexia trajectory were included. In Phase 1, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) issues were generated from a literature review and interviews with patients in four countries. The issues were revised based on patient and health care professional (HCP) input. In Phase 2, questionnaire items were formulated and translated into the languages required for Phase 3, the pilot phase, in which patients from eight countries scored the relevance and importance of each item, and provided qualitative feedback. Results A total of 39 patients and 12 HCPs took part in Phase 1. The literature review produced 68 HRQOL issues, with 22 new issues arising from the patient interviews. After patient and HCP input, 44 issues were formulated into questionnaire items in Phase 2. One hundred ten patients took part in Phase 3. One item was reworded, and 20 items were deleted as a consequence of patient feedback. Conclusions The QLQ-CAX24 is a cancer cachexia-specific questionnaire, comprising 24 items, for HRQOL assessment in clinical trials and practice. It contains five multi-item scales (food aversion, eating and weight-loss worry, eating difficulties, loss of control, and physical decline) and four single items
