    Spraying as an Essential Part of Profitable Apple Orcharding

    It was therefore planned from the start not merely to demonstrate the possibility of controlling apple insects and diseases but also to determine whether they could be controlled profitably. To accomplish this it was necessary to know: exactly what it cost to spray, what sprayed fruit yielded, and what it was worth in comparison with unsprayed fruit from the same orchards. In every spraying demonstration the time spent in mixing and applying the materials and the quantity of material used were recorded. The cost of labor of men and teams per hour was taken at the orchard owners\u27 estimates and the cost of materials was charged at the prices actually paid by the orchardists. In every orchard a block was set apart for the demonstration spraying, and another block, in every way comparable with the first, was left without spraying as a check on the results of spraying. The exact yields of both marketable and unmarketable fruit from the sprayed and from the unsprayed blocks, or from considerable parts of them, were noted. The net value of the fruit was determined by deducting from the actual prices received by the owners the estimated cost of picking, grading, packing, hauling, etc. The net value, therefore, was what the fruit was worth on the trees

    Chemical vapor-deposited carbon nanofibers on carbon fabric for supercapacitor electrode applications

    Entangled carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were synthesized on a flexible carbon fabric (CF) via water-assisted chemical vapor deposition at 800A degrees C at atmospheric pressure utilizing iron (Fe) nanoparticles as catalysts, ethylene (C2H4) as the precursor gas, and argon (Ar) and hydrogen (H-2) as the carrier gases. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electron dispersive spectroscopy were employed to characterize the morphology and structure of the CNFs. It has been found that the catalyst (Fe) thickness affected the morphology of the CNFs on the CF, resulting in different capacitive behaviors of the CNF/CF electrodes. Two different Fe thicknesses (5 and 10 nm) were studied. The capacitance behaviors of the CNF/CF electrodes were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry measurements. The highest specific capacitance, approximately 140 F g(-1), has been obtained in the electrode grown with the 5-nm thickness of Fe. Samples with both Fe thicknesses showed good cycling performance over 2,000 cycles

    Tephra glass chemistry provides storage and discharge details of five magma reservoirs which fed the 75 ka Youngest Toba Tuff eruption, northern Sumatra

    The Youngest Toba Tuff contains five distinct glass populations, identified from Ba, Sr and Y compositions, termed PI (lowest Ba) – PV (highest Ba), representing five compositionally distinct pre‐eruptive magma batches that fed the eruption. The PI–PV compositions display systematic changes, with higher FeO, CaO, MgO, TiO₂ and lower incompatible element concentrations in the low‐SiO₂ PIV/PV, than the high‐SiO₂ PI–PIII compositions. Glass shard abundances indicate PIV and PV were the least voluminous magma batches, and PI and PIII the most voluminous. Pressure estimates using rhyolite‐MELTS indicate PV magma equilibrated at ~6 km, and PI magma at ~3.8 km. Glass population proportions in distal tephra and proximal (caldera‐wall) material describe an eruption which commenced by emptying the deepest PIV and PV reservoirs, this being preferentially deposited in a narrow band across southern India (possibly due to jet‐stream and/or plinian eruption transport), and as abundant pumice clasts in the lowermost proximal ignimbrites. Later, shallower magma reservoirs erupted, with PI being the most abundant as the eruption ended, sourcing the majority of distal ash from co‐ignimbrite clouds (PI‐ and PIII‐dominant), where associated ignimbrites isolated earlier (PIV‐ and PV‐rich) deposits. This study shows how analysis of tephra glass compositional data can yield pre‐eruption magma volume estimates, and enable aspects of magma storage conditions and eruption dynamics to be described

    Applicability of a Markov-chain Monte Carlo method for damage detection on data from the Z-24 and Tamar suspension bridges

    In the Structural Health Monitoring of bridges, the effects of the operational and environmental variability on the structural responses have posed several challenges for early damage detection. In order to overcome those challenges, in the last decade recourse has been made to the statistical pattern recognition paradigm based on vibration data from long-term monitoring. The use of purely data-based algorithms that do not depend on the physical descriptions of the structures have characterized this paradigm. However, one drawback of this procedure is how to set up the baseline condition for new and existing bridges. Therefore, this paper proposes an algorithm with a Bayesian approach based on a Markov-chain Monte Carlo method to cluster structural responses of the bridges into a reduced number of global state conditions, by taking into account eventual multimodality and heterogeneity of the data distribution. This approach, along with the Mahalanobis squared-distance, permits one to form an algorithm able to detect structural damage based on daily response data even under abnormal events caused by operational and environmental variability. The applicability of this approach is first demonstrated on standard data sets from the Z-24 Bridge, Switzerland. Afterwards, for generalization purposes, it is applied on datasets from a supposed undamaged bridge condition, namely the Tamar Bridge, England.     A cross-sectional study of physical activity and sedentary behaviours in a Caribbean population: combining objective and questionnaire data to guide future interventions

    Abstract Background Current understanding of population physical activity (PA) levels and sedentary behaviour in developing countries is limited, and based primarily on self-report. We described PA levels using objective and self-report methods in a developing country population. Methods PA was assessed in a cross-sectional, representative sample of the population of Barbados (25–54 years), using a validated questionnaire (RPAQ) and individually calibrated combined heart rate and movement sensing monitors. The RPAQ collects information on recalled activity in 4 domains: home, work, transport, and leisure. Physical inactivity was defined according to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines; sedentary lifestyle was defined as being sedentary for 8 h or more daily; PA overestimation was defined as perceiving activity to be sufficient, when classified as ‘inactive’ by objective measurement. Results According to objective estimates, 90.5 % (95 % CI: 83.3,94.7) of women and 58.9 % (48.4,68.7) of men did not accumulate sufficient activity to meet WHO minimum recommendations. Overall, 50.7 % (43.3,58.1) of the population was sedentary for 8 h or more each day, and 60.1 % (52.8,66.9) overestimated their activity levels. The prevalence of inactivity was underestimated by self-report in both genders by 28 percentage points (95 % CI: 18,38), but the accuracy of reporting differed by age group, education level, occupational grade, and overweight/obesity status. Low PA was greater in more socially privileged groups: higher educational level and higher occupational grade were both associated with less objectively measured PA and more sedentary time. Variation in domain-specific self-reported physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) by educational attainment was observed: higher education level was associated with more leisure activity and less occupational activity. Occupational PA was the main driver of PAEE for women and men according to self-report, contributing 57 % (95 % CI: 52,61). The most popular leisure activities for both genders were walking and gardening. Conclusions The use of both objective and self-report methods to assess PA and sedentary behaviour provides important complementary information to guide public health programmes. Our results emphasize the urgent need to increase PA and reduce sedentary time in this developing country population. Women and those with higher social economic position are particularly at risk from low levels of physical activity

    Partial breast irradiation has become an increasingly popular mode of treatment after excisional biopsy to treat early stage invasive breast cancer. Its main advantage is that treatment can be delivered in five days rather than 30, as is standard for whole breast irradiation. Early reports suggest good to excellent cosmesis in the vast majority of subjects. Herein we report two cases of skin necrosis in women with Stage 1 breast cancer who smoked before and after partial breast irradiation

    Free versus total serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D in a murine model of colitis

    Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease have been linked to vitamin D-deficiency. Using a dextran sodium sulphate (DSS)-induced model of IBD we have shown previously that mice raised on vitamin D-deficient diets from weaning have lower serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels and develop more severe colitis compared to vitamin D-sufficient counterparts. We have also shown in vitro that immune responses to 25OHD may depend on 'free' rather than total serum concentrations of 25OHD. To investigate the possible effects of free versus total 25OHD on anti-inflammatory immune responses in vivo we have studied DSS-induced colitis in wild type C57BL/6 mice raised from weaning on diets containing vitamin D2 (D2) or vitamin D3 (D3) only (both 1000 IU/kg feed). 25OHD2 has lower binding affinity for the vitamin D binding protein than 25OHD3 which results in higher levels of free 25OHD2 relative to free 25OHD3 in mice raised on a D2-only diet. Total serum 25OHD concentrations, measured by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), showed that D2 mice had significantly lower levels of 25OHD than D3 mice (6.85 ± 2.61 nmol/L vs. 49.16 ± 13.8 nmol/L for D2 and D3 respectively). Despite this, direct ELISA measurement showed no difference in free serum 25OHD levels between D2 and D3 mice (13.62 ± 2.26 pmol/L vs. 14.11 ± 2.24 pmol/L for D2 and D3 respectively). Analysis of DSS-induced colitis also showed no difference in weight loss or disease progression between D2 and D3 mice. These data indicate that despite D2-fed mice being vitamin D-deficient based on serum total 25OHD concentrations, these mice showed no evidence of increased inflammatory colitis disease relative to vitamin D-sufficient D3 mice. We therefore propose that free, rather than total serum 25OHD, may be a better marker of immune responses to vitamin D in vivo
