On the design of a real-time volume rendering engine

    Get PDF
An architecture for a Real-Time Volume Rendering Engine (RT-VRE) is given, capable of computing 750 × 750 × 512 samples from a 3D dataset at a rate of 25 images per second. The RT-VRE uses for this purpose 64 dedicated rendering chips, cooperating with 16 RISC-processors. A plane interpolator circuit and a composition circuit, both capable to operate at very high speeds, have been designed for a 1.6 micron VLSI process. Both the interpolator and composition circuit are back from production. They have been tested and both complied with our specifications

Effect of CYP2C9 polymorphisms on prescribed dose and time-to-stable dose of sulfonylureas in primary care patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus

Aims: Sulfonylureas are mainly metabolized by the enzyme CYP2C9. Two allelic variants, CYP2C9*2 and CYP2C9*3, result in decreased metabolic capacity and have been associated with elevated sulfonylurea serum levels. However, most of the available data originates from pharmacokinetic analyses performed in healthy individuals. In this study, the effect of CYP2C9*2 and CYP2C9*3 alleles on prescribed dose and time-to-stable dose of sulfonylureas was investigated. Materials & methods: A group of 207 incident sulfonylurea users treated in four university affiliated primary care centers were identified. The effect of the CYP2C9*2 and CYP2C9*3 alleles on prescribed dose and time-to-stable dose was then assessed. Results: No significant effects of the CYP2C9*2 and CYP2C9*3 alleles were found. However, a trend towards a lower stable glimepiride dose for carriers of the CYP2C9*3 allele was observed. Conclusion: Genotyping for the CYP2C9*2 and CYP2C9*3 alleles currently appears to have no clinical implications for dosing of sulfonylureas in primary care patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus.Personalised Therapeutic

First report of field outbreaks of ergot-alkaloid toxicity in South Africa

    Get PDF
Outbreaks of clinical disease caused by the ingestion of ergotized Lolium rigidum (annual ryegrass), which resulted in a substantial loss in production, have been reported. A number of outbreaks of a hyperthermia syndrome in cattle, characterized by severe loss in milk production, loss of body mass and reduced fertility, are described. In one major outbreak in March to April 1994, a milling company reported that 2 646 dairy cows on 29 farms had developed clinical signs. In this outbreak, significant levels of ergotamine, ergosine, ergocornine and ergocryptine were found in the milled dairy rations fed to the affected cows. Barley screenings containing ergotized annual-ryegrass seed was identified as the toxic component and probable source of the ergot alkaloids in the ration. The clinical syndrome was reproduced experimentally by feeding suspected feed to a group of nine high-producing Ayrshire cows. An outbreak of gangrenous necrosis of the extremities in young cattle in the winter of 1987 was also suspected of having been caused by ergot alkaloids in grain screenings. The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi. Low-mass e+e- pair production in 158 A GeV Pb-Au collisions at the CERN SPS, its dependence on multiplicity and transverse momentum

We report a measurement of low-mass electron pairs observed in 158 GeV/nucleon Pb-Au collisions. The pair yield integrated over the range of invariant masses 0.2 < m < 2.0 GeV is enhanced by a factor of 3.5 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.9 (syst) over the expectation from neutral meson decays. As observed previously in S-Au collisions, the enhancement is most pronounced in the invariant-mass region 300-700 MeV. For Pb-Au we find evidence for a strong increase of the enhancement with centrality. In addition, we show that the enhancement covers a wide range in transverse momentum, but is largest at the lowest observed pt.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.Lett.

Recent results from Pb-Au collisions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon obtained with the CERES spectrometer

During the 1996 lead run time, CERES has accumulated 42 million events, corresponding to a factor of 5 more statistics than in 1995 and 2.5 million events of a special photon-run. We report on the results of the low-mass e+^+e^--pair analysis. Since the most critical item is the poor signal-to-background ratio we also discuss the understanding of this background, in absolute terms, with the help of a detailed Monte Carlo simulation. We show preliminary results of the photon analysis and summarize the results of the hadron analysis preliminarily reported on already at QM'97Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, Proceedings of the XIV Int. New Results on Pb-Au Collisions at 40 AGeV from the CERES/NA45 Experiment

    Get PDF
In 1999 the CERES/NA45 ran at the CERN SPS with a beam energy of 40 GeV/nucleon. The data set comprises about 8.7 millions Pb-Au events with a trigger selection corresponding to approximately the most central 30% of the geometrical cross section. Results on low-mass electron pair analysis are presented. The upgrade of the experimental setup with the radial drift TPC has allowed to enhance hadron physics capabilities of the experiment. New results on hadron spectra (including Lambda) and flow are presented.Comment: Talk at the International Nuclear Physics Conference INPC2001, Berkeley, CA, July 29th - August 3rd 200
