In a no-win situation: The employment–health dilemma
Work and organizational psychology (WOP) research has to date mostly focused on people privileged to have the choice between several attractive job options and less on people who are restricted in their job choice (e.g., due to their qualification or personal contingencies) and have to choose from fewer and often less-than-optimal jobs. Often, the jobs available to the latter are characterized by precarious employment and hazardous working conditions which can put them in the difficult situation of having to choose between a health-threatening job and possible unemployment. Building on interdisciplinary literature, we propose the employment–health dilemma (E-H dilemma) as a framework for analyzing this intrapersonal conflict of having to choose between employment (incurring health threats) and health (incurring economic threats) and discuss potential antecedents and consequences of the E-H dilemma at the societal, organizational, and individual level. We outline the implications of the E-H dilemma and make a case for examining the full spectrum of job choice situations in WOP research. In doing so, we demonstrate what WOP can gain by embracing a more inclusive and multidisciplinary approach: uncovering processes in their entirety (e.g., job choice decisions of all people) and strengthening the role and legitimacy of WOP in society
Money in monetary policy design: monetary cross-checking in the New-Keynesian model
In the New-Keynesian model, optimal interest rate policy under uncertainty is formulated without reference to monetary aggregates as long as certain standard assumptions on the distributions of unobservables are satisfied. The model has been criticized for failing to explain common trends in money growth and inflation, and that therefore money should be used as a cross-check in policy formulation (see Lucas (2007)). We show that the New-Keynesian model can explain such trends if one allows for the possibility of persistent central bank misperceptions. Such misperceptions motivate the search for policies that include additional robustness checks. In earlier work, we proposed an interest rate rule that is near-optimal in normal times but includes a cross-check with monetary information. In case of unusual monetary trends, interest rates are adjusted. In this paper, we show in detail how to derive the appropriate magnitude of the interest rate adjustment following a significant cross-check with monetary information, when the New-Keynesian model is the central bank’s preferred model. The cross-check is shown to be effective in offsetting persistent deviations of inflation due to central bank misperceptions. Disease prevention strategies for QX disease (Marteilia sydneyi) of Sydney rock oysters (Saccostrea glomerata)
The Sydney rock oyster (Saccostrea glomerata) forms the basis of an important aquaculture industry on the east coast of Australia. During the 1970s, production of S. glomerata began to decline, in part as a result of mortalities arising from Queensland unknown (QX) disease. Histological studies implicated the paramyxean parasite Marteilia sydneyi in the disease outbreaks. Disease zoning was implemented to prevent the spread of M. sydneyi-infected oysters. This control measure hindered rock oyster farming, which historically has relied on transferring wild-caught spat between estuaries for on-growing to market size and has not prevented the subsequent occurrence of QX disease in the Georges and Hawkesbury rivers in central New South Wales. Management of QX disease has been hampered by the complicated life cycle of M. sydneyi, with outbreaks of QX disease likely to be regulated by a combination of the abundance of intermediate host of M. sydneyi, environmental stressors, and the immunocompetence of S. glomerata. The future of the Sydney rock oyster industry relies on understanding these factors and progressing the industry from relying on farming wild-caught seed to the successful commercialization of hatchery-produced QX-resistant S. glomerata
The influence of visions on cooperation among interest organizations in fragmented socio-technical systems
The paper shows that visions of the future can be used as a predictor of cooperation and division between actors in their efforts to shape the institutional environment, specifically policy in socio-technical systems. Accordingly, the paper suggests a new method to analyze visions: a virtual solution space in which visions can be grouped according to their similarity. The similarity of visions is calculated based on cluster analysis. Empirically, the paper focuses on the networks between industry associations in the heating transition in the German building sector. It shows that actors whose visions of future socio-technical system developments overlap are more likely to cooperate with each other. It also suggests that the fragmentation of the residential heating system in Germany is reflected in a fragmented actor network. Furthermore, the authors show that shared technological interests can outweigh similar visions. These fragmented technological interests hinder meaningful cooperation. This is potentially one reason why a powerful low-carbon heating coalition in Germany that could facilitate an accelerated deployment of low-carbon heat systems by driving policy change has not emerged to date. The paper contributes to a better understanding of how niche actors in sustainability transitions use their agency and specifically strategize to bring about institutional change. Folding-competent and folding-defective forms of Ricin A chain have different fates following retrotranslocation from the endoplasmic reticulum
We report that a toxic polypeptide retaining the potential to refold upon dislocation from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
to the cytosol (ricin A chain; RTA) and a misfolded version that cannot (termed RTAΔ), follow ER-associated degradation
(ERAD) pathways in Saccharomyces cerevisiae that substantially diverge in the cytosol. Both polypeptides are dislocated
in a step mediated by the transmembrane Hrd1p ubiquitin ligase complex and subsequently degraded. Canonical
polyubiquitylation is not a prerequisite for this interaction because a catalytically inactive Hrd1p E3 ubiquitin ligase
retains the ability to retrotranslocate RTA, and variants lacking one or both endogenous lysyl residues also require the
Hrd1p complex. In the case of native RTA, we established that dislocation also depends on other components of the
classical ERAD-L pathway as well as an ongoing ER–Golgi transport. However, the dislocation pathways deviate
strikingly upon entry into the cytosol. Here, the CDC48 complex is required only for RTAΔ, although the involvement of
individual ATPases (Rpt proteins) in the 19S regulatory particle (RP) of the proteasome, and the 20S catalytic chamber
itself, is very different for the two RTA variants. We conclude that cytosolic ERAD components, particularly the
proteasome RP, can discriminate between structural features of the same substrate
Digitization and automation of training and development in organizations: chances, challenges, and application examples

(GIO)“ gibt einen Überblick über die vielfältigen Digitalisierungs- und Automatisierungsmöglichkeiten, die aktuelle technologische Entwicklungen für die Weiterbildung in Organisationen eröffnen, und diskutiert Chancen und Risken ihres Einsatzes. Um wettbewerbsfähig, effizient und produktiv zu bleiben, müssen Organisationen sicherstellen, dass ihre Beschäftigten sich fortwährend weiterbilden und entwickeln. Die Weiterbildung aller Beschäftigten in allen notwendigen Kompetenzbereichen durch entsprechende Maßnahmen beansprucht jedoch viele Ressourcen. Um diese Ressourcen optimal einsetzen zu können, muss der Kompetenzentwicklungsbedarf der Beschäftigten kontinuierlich und zutreffend ermittelt werden, damit dieser auch durch passende Weiterbildungsmaßnahmen gezielt und adäquat adressiert werden kann. Auch diese übergeordneten Prozesse der Weiterbildung sind ressourcenintensiv. Daher wurde bereits in der Vergangenheit eine Vielzahl von Technologien eingesetzt, um die organisationale Weiterbildung (bspw. durch digital zur Verfügung gestellte Materialien zum Selbststudium) und die damit zusammenhängenden Prozesse durch Digitalisierung effizienter gestalten und verwalten zu können. In diesem Beitrag betrachten wir vor allem die vielfältigen Digitalisierungs- und Automatisierungsmöglichkeiten, die aktuelle technologische Entwicklungen eröffnen, und führen diese – strukturiert am Prozess der Personalentwicklung – mit Beispielen aus Forschung und Praxis aus.This article in the journal “Gruppe. (GIO)” provides an overview of the manifold digitization and automation possibilities that current technological developments provide for training and development and discusses the opportunities and risks of their use. To remain competitive, efficient, and productive, organizations need to ensure that their employees continue to learn and develop. However, training all employees in all necessary competencies requires a lot of resources. To be able to use these resources optimally, the developmental needs of the employees must be determined continuously and accurately so that these can be addressed in a targeted and adequate manner through suitable training and development activities. These administrative processes of training and development are also resource-intensive. For this reason, organizations made use of a variety of technologies in the past to make training and development and the associated administrative processes more efficient and manageable through digitization (e.g., by providing digital learning materials). In this article, we highlight the diverse digitization and automation possibilities that current technological developments offer and illustrate them—structured along the process of personnel development—with examples from research and practice
Simvastatin inhibits TLR8 signaling in primary human monocytes and spontaneous TNF production from rheumatoid synovial membrane cultures
Simvastatin has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects that are independent of its serum cholesterol lowering action, but the mechanisms by which these anti-inflammatory effects are mediated have not been elucidated. To explore the mechanism involved, the effect of simvastatin on Toll-like receptor (TLR) signalling in primary human monocytes was investigated. A short pre-treatment with simvastatin dose-dependently inhibited the production of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF) in response to TLR8 (but not TLRs 2, 4, or 5) activation. Statins are known inhibitors of the cholesterol biosynthetic pathway, but intriguingly TLR8 inhibition could not be reversed by addition of mevalonate or geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate; downstream products of cholesterol biosynthesis. TLR8 signalling was examined in HEK 293 cells stably expressing TLR8, where simvastatin inhibited IKKα/β phosphorylation and subsequent NF-κB activation without affecting the pathway to AP-1. Since simvastatin has been reported to have anti-inflammatory effects in RA patients and TLR8 signalling contributes to TNF production in human RA synovial tissue in culture, simvastatin was tested in these cultures. Simvastatin significantly inhibited the spontaneous release of TNF in this model which was not reversed by mevalonate. Together, these results demonstrate a hitherto unrecognized mechanism of simvastatin inhibition of TLR8 signalling that may in part explain its beneficial anti-inflammatory effects
Practitioner’s Section: Integrated Resource Efficiency Analysis for Reducing Climate Impacts in the Chemical Industry
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions of the material-intensive chemical industry requires an integrated analysis and optimization of the complex production systems including raw material and energy use, resulting costs and environmental and climate impacts. To meet this challenge, the research project InReff (Integrated Resource Efficiency Analysis for Reducing Climate Impacts in the Chemical Industry) has been established. It aims at the development of an IT-supported modeling and evaluation framework which is able to comprehensively address issues of resource efficiency and climate change within the chemical industry, e.g. the minimization of material and energy intensity and consequently greenhouse gas emissions, without compromising on production performance. The paper presents background information on resource efficiency and the research project, an ideal-typical decision model for resource efficiency analysis, the conceptual approach for an IT-based integration platform as well as the case study design at the industrial project partners’ sites. These first results are linked to future activities and further research questions are highlighted in the concluding section
