Pagausoaren (Columba palumbus) neguko joan-etorriak hobeto ulertzearren, hegazti horietako bi Biotrack motako emisore batez hornitu zituzten. 2000ko urtarrilean, hiru asteko jarraipenaren ondoren, hegaztiek alde egin zuten negualdiko lekutik. Aldi horretan 14.000 ha baino txikiagoa zen eskualde batean egon ziren eta ehiza erreserban eman zuten denbora horren % 60 baino gehixeago. Emaitza horiek eraztunez hornituriko negualdian egindakoekin konparatu ziren. Abenduaren eta urtarrilaren artean eraztunez hornituriko hegazti guztiak eraztuna jarri zitzaien lekutik gertu harrapatu zituzten garai beretsuan (n=51). Lehen emaitza horiek, antza denez, erakustera ematen dute hegaztiak gutxi mugitzen direla eta negualdiko lekuari leial mantendu ohi direla. In order to study the movements of the Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus)while wintering, two birds have been equipped with a Biotrack-type radio localizer. After three weeks of monitoring in January 2000, the birds letf their wintering areas. During this period they had remained in a territory that covered less than 14,000 hectares, and spent just over 60% of their time in non hunting grounds. These results have been compared with data on pigeon ringing carried out during wintering periods. All birds banded between December and January were trapped again in the same period near where they had been ringed (n=51). These preliminary results seem to indicate that the birds move very little and that they have staunch connections to their wintering emplacements

S-acylation of the insulin-responsive aminopeptidase (IRAP) : quantitative analysis and identification of modified cysteines

The insulin-responsive aminopeptidase (IRAP) was recently identified as an S-acylated protein in adipocytes and other tissues. However, there is currently no information on the extent of S-acylation of this protein, the residues that are modified, or the effects of S-acylation on IRAP localisation. In this study, we employ a semi-quantitative acyl-RAC technique to show that approximately 60% of IRAP is S-acylated in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. In contrast, S-acylation of GLUT4, a glucose transporter that extensively co-localises with IRAP, was approximately five-fold lower. Site-directed mutagenesis was employed to map the sites of S-acylation on IRAP to two cysteine residues, one of which is predicted to lie in the cytoplasmic side of the single transmembrane domain and the other which is just upstream of this transmembrane domain; our results suggest that these cysteines may be modified in a mutually-exclusive manner. Although S-acylation regulates the intracellular trafficking of several transmembrane proteins, we did not detect any effects of mutating the modified cysteines on the plasma membrane localisation of IRAP in HEK293T cells, suggesting that S-acylation is not essential for the movement of IRAP through the secretory pathway

This article proposes to present a study conducted by the Raw Materials research group, the results of which comprise the conceptual guidelines for compiling an M+D material library. The study includes the topic, materials and design taking the impact of the changes that came into being in the post industrial era on project methodologies and the search for information regarding materials. Taking into account the importance and complexity that these relationships have taken on currently, we have studied the issue of materials based on Manzini (1983) and Ashby and Johnson (2002). Afterward different databases and materials libraries located in the Brazil, the United States, France and Italy geared toward design professionals and students were analyzed to understand what information and means of access to them were available. The project methodologies were approached based on Löbach (1991), Bürdeck (1994), Schulmann (1994), Baxter (1998), Dantas (1998 and 2005) and Papanek (1995 and 2000). This study sought to identify the key elements of the role of materials in the project process today, to serve as a parameter for the analysis of the models studied. A comparative analysis of the models investigated enabled identification of positive and negative aspects to adapt to the needs previously mentioned and identify conceptual guidelines for compiling a collection of materials for use in design projects. Extraversion and the West African EPA Development Programme: realising the development dimension of ACP–EU trade?

    Get PDF
West African elites have successfully argued for an Economic Partnership Agreement Development Programme (EPADP) as part of free trade negotiations with the European Commission. ECOWAS officials state that the EPADP is necessary to realise the ‘development dimension’ of trade. In particular, they have (re)articulated Europe’s own narratives relating to Aid for Trade and private sector development – insisting that the European Commission delivers on its promises. Accordingly, European negotiators have conceded the principle of the EPADP, stating that around €· billion will be delivered. This article, however, examines the likely (in)capacity of the EPADP to meaningfully marry trade and development in the context of premature liberalisation under Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs). Crucially, it argues that West African extraversion in terms of EPADP resources may entrench predatory elites while locking-in ECOWAS states into inequitable trade structures that re-embed poverty in the region

    The zDHHC family of S-acyltransferases

The discovery of the zDHHC family of S-acyltransferase enzymes has been one of the major breakthroughs in the S-acylation field. Now, more than a decade since their discovery, major questions centre on profiling the substrates of individual zDHHC enzymes (there are 24 ZDHHC genes and several hundred S-acylated proteins), defining the mechanisms of enzyme-substrate specificity and unravelling the importance of this enzyme family for cellular physiology and pathology

Detection of Intranasally Delivered Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in the Lesioned Mouse Brain: A Cautionary Report

    Get PDF
Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) hold promise for autologous treatment of neuropathologies. Intranasal delivery is relatively noninvasive and has recently been reported to result in transport of MSCs to the brain. However, the ability of MSCs to migrate from nasal passages to sites of neuropathology and ultimately survive has not been fully examined. In this paper, we harvested MSCs from transgenic mice expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein (cells hereafter referred to as MSC-EGFP) and delivered them intranasally to wild-type mice sustaining mechanical lesions in the striatum. Using fluorescent, colorimetric, and ultrastructural detection methods, GFP-expressing cells were undetectable in the brain from 3 hours to 2 months after MSC delivery. However, bright autofluorescence that strongly resembled emission from GFP was observed in the olfactory bulb and striatum of lesioned control and MSC-EGFP-treated mice. In a control experiment, we directly implanted MSC-EGFPs into the mouse striatum and detected robust GFP expression 1 and 7 days after implantation. These findings suggest that—under our conditions—intranasally delivered MSC-EGFPs do not survive or migrate in the brain. Furthermore, our observations highlight the necessity of including appropriate controls when working with GFP as a cellular marker
