    Exact self-consistent particle-like solutions with spherical and/or cylindrical symmetry to the equations governing the interacting system of scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational fields have been obtained. As a particular case it is shown that the equations of motion admit a special kind of solutions with sharp boundary known as droplets. For these solutions, the physical fields vanish and the space-time is flat outside of the critical sphere or cylinder.     Modeling the evolution of herbicide resistance in weed species with a complex life cycle

    A growing number of weed species have evolved resistance to herbicides in recent years, which causes an immense financial burden to farmers. An increasingly popular method of weed control is the adoption of crops that are resistant to specific herbicides, which allows farmers to apply the herbicide during the growing season without harming the crop. If such crops are planted in the presence of closely related weed species, it is possible that resistance genes could transfer from the crop species to feral populations of the wild species via gene flow and become stably introgressed under ongoing selective pressure by the herbicide. We use a density-dependent matrix model to evaluate the effect of planting such crops on the evolution of herbicide resistance under a range of management scenarios. Our model expands on previous simulation studies by considering weed species with a more complex life cycle (perennial, rhizomatous weed species), studying the effect of environmental variation in herbicide effectiveness, and evaluating the role of common simplifying genetic assumptions on resistance evolution. Our model predictions are qualitatively similar to previous modeling studies using species with a simpler life cycle, which is, crop rotation in combination with rotation of herbicide site of action effectively controls weed populations and slows the evolution of herbicide resistance. We find that ignoring the effect of environmental variation can lead to an over- or under-prediction of the speed of resistance evolution. The effect of environmental variation in herbicide effectiveness depends on the resistance allele frequency in the weed population at the beginning of the simulation. Finally, we find that degree of dominance and ploidy level have a much larger effect on the predicted speed of resistance evolution compared to the rate of gene flow. Includes 5 supplemental file

    Cathepsin S in tumours, regional lymph nodes and sera of patients with lung cancer: relation to prognosis

    Cysteine proteinase cathepsin S (Cat S) is expressed mainly in lymphatic tissues and has been characterised as a key enzyme in major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) mediated antigen presentation. Cat S has been measured in tissue cytosols of lung parenchyma, lung tumours and lymph nodes and in sera of patients with lung tumours and of healthy controls, by specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A difference in Cat S level was found between tumour and adjacent control tissue cytosols of 60 lung cancer patients (median 4.3 vs. 2.8 ng mg−1protein). In lymph nodes obtained from 24 patients of the same group, the level of Cat S was significantly higher than in tumours or lung parenchyma (P< 0.001). Additionally, significantly higher levels were found in non-infiltrated than in infiltrated lymph nodes (median 16.6 vs 7.5 ng mg−1protein). Patients with low levels of Cat S in tumours and lung parenchyma exhibited a significantly higher risk of death than those with high levels of Cat S (P= 0.025 – tumours;P= 0.02 – parenchyma). Immunohistochemical analysis (IHA) of lung parenchyma revealed a staining reaction in alveolar type II cells, macrophages and bronchial epithelial cells. In regional lymph node tissue, strong staining of Cat S was found in lymphocytes and histiocytes. Nevertheless, Cat S was detected also in tumour cells, independently of their origin. Our results provide evidence that Cat S may be involved in malignant progression. Its role, however, differs from that of the related Cats B and L and could be associated with the immune response rather than with remodelling of extracellular matrix. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign  http://www.bjcancer.co

    Contributions of individual cover crop species to rainfed maize production in semi-arid cropping systems

    Cover crop (CC) species selection can contribute to reducing soil penetration resistance (brassica species), improved soil nitrogen (N) cycling (legume species), and suppression of weeds (grass species). However, one of the main concerns about including CCs in water-limited environments is soil water use and the consequences to subsequent crops. To determine the effects of individual CC species under water-limited environments, we evaluated fall and spring CC biomass produced, and soil water and N content, penetration resistance, weed density and biomass during the maize growing season, and maize grain yield. The experiment was conducted under a winter wheat-maize-fallow rotation at two locations (North Platte and Grant, NE) during 2016−2017 and 2017−2018 (four site-years). Treatments consisted of seven popular CC species plus a control (fallow), planted after winter wheat harvest. Spring oats, Siberian kale, and purple top turnip produced greater fall biomass, while cereal rye produced the greatest amount of spring biomass. However, cereal rye reduced soil volumetric water content in North Platte 2016−2017 and increased soil penetration resistance from 20–30 cm soil depth across site-years likely due to soil water use. Spring cover crop growth suppressed weeds early in the maize growing season. Due to its aboveground biomass production, cereal rye decreased weed density and biomass by 80 and 88 %, respectively, compared to the fallow treatment. On the other hand, except for brassicas, CCs decreased N levels in the soil during maize growing season, and all CC species reduced maize grain yield up to 30 % compared to fallow (except spring oats). Spring oats can be an alternative to cereal rye as CC species for semi-arid regions. However, since CCs did not promote any maize yield gain, our findings suggest that producers should use caution when incorporating CCs in their cropping systems in water-limited environments. This research provides valuable information on the potential impact of CCs on rainfed maize production, as well as help producers and agronomists develop better CC management programs for cropping systems in semi-arid regions
