    Accuracy of Consumer Grade Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Devices Compared to Air Displacement Plethysmography

    The purpose of this study was to examine the accuracy of percent body fat estimates from seven different bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) models and a seven-site skin fold formula (SKF) compared with air displacement plethysmography (ADP) in females. Eighty-two female volunteers ranging from 19-67 years (31.96 ± 1.39) enrolled in this study. Body composition was assessed by seven site skin folds (SKF), ADP, Tetrapolar BIA (TBIA), and five consumer grade BIA devices: finger to finger (FF), hand to hand (HH) and three different leg to leg (LL1, LL2, LL3) models. In addition, LL3 was analyzed using the athletic (LL3a) and non-athletic modes (LL3b). The Institutional Review Board for Human Subjects at Eastern Washington University approved this study. The participants represented a wide range of percentage body fat (BF) as assessed by ADP (8.40 to 47.10, mean = 26.15 ± 0.93 SEE). No difference in the estimated percent body fat was found between ADP and SKF, TBIA, FF, HH, LL1, LL2, LL3a, and LL3b (r=0.862, 0.553, 0.775, 0.771, 0.765, 0.791, 0.798, 0.796 respectively; P\u3c0.001). Bland-Altman plots of the differences between % fat by ADP and BIA versus average % fat by the two methods showed no systematic differences for SKF and the seven BIA models (mean differences ± SD : SKF, 1.92 ± 4.25; TBIA, 0.73 ± 7.3; FF, -1.55 ± 5.34, HH, 1.37 ± 5.35; LL1, -4.70 ± 5.40, LL2, -3.72 ± 5.12 and LL3a, 1.70 ± 5.07; LL3b, -6.11 ± 31.40 p\u3c0.05). Skin fold measures were found to be the most reliable field method of estimating body composition. Of the BIA machines tested, the strongest relationship was found in the LL models with the LL3 in athletic mode (LL3a) being the most reliable. For the more affordable models, the LL2 was the most reliable compared to ADP

    Family Home Visitors: Increasing Minority Women’s Access to Health Services

    The article describes how service access barriers (language, trust) were addressed at different levels (organization, service provider, community) by involving Family Home Visitors to support Nurse Practitioners in providing pre- and postnatal services to linguis­tic minority women in Ontario. The investigators undertook a secondary analysis of 18 semi-structured interviews with health unit informants, Nurse Practitioners, program us­ers, and community leaders, including Family Home Visitors. Health units facilitated col­laboration between two programs aimed at serving mothers with young children, result­ing in both programs using Family Home Visitors. They enhanced minority women’s trust in Nurse Practitioner services by providing interpretation, outreach and support. Family Home Visitors increased Nurse Practitioners’ community knowledge and insights of the family situation. The findings contribute to our understanding of strategies to overcome language and trust barriers and improve access to programs for isolated women from linguistic minority backgrounds. Family Home Visitors’ role has the potential for being expanded and deserves more system support

    An observational study of associations among maternal fluids during parturition, neonatal output, and breastfed newborn weight loss

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Newborn weight measurements are used as a key indicator of breastfeeding adequacy. The purpose of this study was to explore non-feeding factors that might be related to newborn weight loss. The relationship between the intravenous fluids women receive during parturition (the act of giving birth, including time in labour or prior to a caesarean section) and their newborn's weight loss during the first 72 hours postpartum was the primary interest.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this observational cohort study, we collected data about maternal oral and IV fluids during labour or before a caesarean section. Participants (n = 109) weighed their newborns every 12 hours for the first three days then daily to Day 14, and they weighed neonatal output (voids and stools) for three days.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>At 60 hours (nadir), mean newborn weight loss was 6.57% (SD 2.51; n = 96, range 1.83-13.06%). When groups, based on maternal fluids, were compared (≤1200 mls [n = 21] versus > 1200 [n = 53]), newborns lost 5.51% versus 6.93% (p = 0.03), respectively. For the first 24 hours, bivariate analyses show positive relationships between a) neonatal output and percentage of newborn weight lost (r(96) = 0.493, p < 0.001); and b) maternal IV fluids (final 2 hours) and neonatal output (r(42) = 0.383, p = 0.012). At 72 hours, there was a positive correlation between grams of weight lost and all maternal fluids (r(75) = 0.309, p = 0.007).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Timing and amounts of maternal IV fluids appear correlated to neonatal output and newborn weight loss. Neonates appear to experience diuresis and correct their fluid status in the first 24 hours. We recommend a measurement at 24 hours, instead of birth weight, for baseline when assessing weight change. Because practices can differ between maternity settings, we further suggest that clinicians should collect and analyze data from dyads in their care to determine an optimal baseline measurement.</p

    Lifetime Economic Burden of Intimate Partner Violence Among U.S. Adults

    Introduction: This study estimated the U.S. lifetime per-victim cost and economic burden of intimate partner violence. Methods: Data from previous studies were combined with 2012 U.S. National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey data in a mathematical model. Intimate partner violence was defined as contact sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking victimization with related impact (e.g., missed work days). Costs included attributable impaired health, lost productivity, and criminal justice costs from the societal perspective. Mean age at first victimization was assessed as 25 years. Future costs were discounted by 3%. The main outcome measures were the mean per-victim (female and male) and total population (or economic burden) lifetime cost of intimate partner violence. Secondary outcome measures were marginal outcome probabilities among victims (e.g., anxiety disorder) and associated costs. Analysis was conducted in 2017. Results: The estimated intimate partner violence lifetime cost was 103,767perfemalevictimand103,767 per female victim and 23,414 per male victim, or a population economic burden of nearly 3.6trillion(2014US3.6 trillion (2014 US) over victims’ lifetimes, based on 43 million U.S. adults with victimization history. This estimate included 2.1trillion(592.1 trillion (59% of total) in medical costs, 1.3 trillion (37%) in lost productivity among victims and perpetrators, 73billion(273 billion (2%) in criminal justice activities, and 62 billion (2%) in other costs, including victim property loss or damage. Government sources pay an estimated $1.3 trillion (37%) of the lifetime economic burden. Conclusions: Preventing intimate partner violence is possible and could avoid substantial costs. These findings can inform the potential benefit of prioritizing prevention, as well as evaluation of implemented prevention strategies

    Ecological and social strategies for managing fisheries using the Resist-Accept- Direct (RAD) framework

    Fisheries management is a complex task made even more challenging by rapid and unprecedented socioecological transformations associated with climate change. The Resist-Accept- Direct (RAD) framework can be a useful tool to support fisheries management in facing the high uncertainty and variability associated with aquatic ecosystem transformations. Here, RAD strategies are presented to address ecological goals for aquatic ecosystems and social goals for fisheries. These strategies are mapped on a controllability matrix which explores the ability to guide a system\u27s behaviour towards a desired state based on ecological responsiveness and societal receptivity to change. Understanding and improving the controllability of aquatic systems and fisheries can help managers to maintain the broadest suite of available RAD management strategies

    Cancer Survivors' Health Worries and Associations with Lifestyle Practices

    This study examined among recently diagnosed breast and prostate cancer survivors (N = 678) associations between worry about a future diagnosis of heart disease or cancer and hypothetical and actual adherence to exercise and dietary guidelines. Greater worry about future illness was reported under the hypothetical scenario of nonadherence to guidelines relative to the scenario of adherence. Worry about potential heart disease was associated with actual adherence to guidelines, whereas worry about a potential cancer diagnosis was not. Findings suggest that the motivational properties of worry should be considered when developing interventions to reduce heart disease risk among cancer survivors

    Replication of CNTNAP2 association with nonword repetition and support for FOXP2 association with timed reading and motor activities in a dyslexia family sample

    Two functionally related genes, FOXP2 and CNTNAP2, influence language abilities in families with rare syndromic and common nonsyndromic forms of impaired language, respectively. We investigated whether these genes are associated with component phenotypes of dyslexia and measures of sequential motor ability. Quantitative transmission disequilibrium testing (QTDT) and linear association modeling were used to evaluate associations with measures of phonological memory (nonword repetition, NWR), expressive language (sentence repetition), reading (real word reading efficiency, RWRE; word attack, WATT), and timed sequential motor activities (rapid alternating place of articulation, RAPA; finger succession in the dominant hand, FS-D) in 188 family trios with a child with dyslexia. Consistent with a prior study of language impairment, QTDT in dyslexia showed evidence of CNTNAP2 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) association with NWR. For FOXP2, we provide the first evidence for SNP association with component phenotypes of dyslexia, specifically NWR and RWRE but not WATT. In addition, FOXP2 SNP associations with both RAPA and FS-D were observed. Our results confirm the role of CNTNAP2 in NWR in a dyslexia sample and motivate new questions about the effects of FOXP2 in neurodevelopmental disorders

    Iconic dishes, culture and identity: the Christmas pudding and its hundred years’ journey in the USA, Australia, New Zealand and India

    Asserting that recipes are textual evidences reflecting the society that produced them, this article explores the evolution of the recipes of the iconic Christmas pudding in the United States, Australia, New Zealand and India between the mid-nineteenth and the mid-twentieth centuries. Combining a micro-analysis of the recipes and the cookbook that provided them with contemporary testimonies, the article observes the dynamics revealed by the preparation and consumption of the pudding in these different societies. The findings demonstrate the relevance of national iconic dishes to the study of notions of home, migration and colonization, as well as the development of a new society and identity. They reveal how the preservation, transformation and even rejection of a traditional dish can be representative of the complex and sometimes conflicting relationships between colonists, migrants or new citizens and the places they live in

    The mammalian gene function resource: the International Knockout Mouse Consortium.

    In 2007, the International Knockout Mouse Consortium (IKMC) made the ambitious promise to generate mutations in virtually every protein-coding gene of the mouse genome in a concerted worldwide action. Now, 5 years later, the IKMC members have developed high-throughput gene trapping and, in particular, gene-targeting pipelines and generated more than 17,400 mutant murine embryonic stem (ES) cell clones and more than 1,700 mutant mouse strains, most of them conditional. A common IKMC web portal (www.knockoutmouse.org) has been established, allowing easy access to this unparalleled biological resource. The IKMC materials considerably enhance functional gene annotation of the mammalian genome and will have a major impact on future biomedical research
