Characterization of CDOM in saline and freshwater lakes across China using spectroscopic analysis

Colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is a major component of DOM in waters, and plays a vital role in carbon cycling in inland waters. In this study, the light absorption and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix spectra (EEMs) of CDOM of 936 water samples collected in 2014–2017 from 234 lakes in five regions across China were examined to determine relationships between lake water sources (fresh versus saline) and their fluorescence/absorption characteristics. Results indicated significant differences regarding DOC concentration and aCDOM(254) between freshwater (6.68 mg C L−1, 19.55 m-1) and saline lakes (27.4 mg C L−1, 41.17 m-1). While humic-like (F5) and fulvic-like (F3) compounds contributed to CDOM fluorescence in all lake waters significantly, their contribution to total fluorescence intensity (FT) differed between saline and freshwater lakes. Significant negative relationships were also observed between lake altitude with either F5 (R2 = 0.63, N = 306) or FT (R2 = 0.64, N = 306), suggesting that the abundance of humic-like materials in CDOM tends to decrease with increased in lakes altitude. In high-altitude lakes, strong solar irradiance and UV exposure may have induced photo-oxidation reactions resulting in decreased abundance of humic-like substances and the formation of low molecular weight compounds. These findings have important implications regarding our understanding of C dynamics in lacustrine systems and the contribution of these ecosystems to the global C cycle

    Towards Privacy-Preserving and Efficient Attribute-Based Multi-Keyword Search

Searchable encryption can provide secure search over encrypted cloud-based data without infringing data confidentiality and data searcher privacy. In this work, we focus on a secure search service providing fine-grained and expressive search functionality, which can be seen as a general extension of searchable encryption and called attribute-based multi-keyword search (ABMKS). In most of the existing ABMKS schemes, the ciphertext size of keyword index (encrypted index) grows linearly with the number of the keyword associated with a file, so that the computation and communication complexity of keyword index is limited to O(m) , where m is the number of the keyword. To address this shortage, we propose the first ABMKS scheme through utilizing keyword dictionary tree and the subset cover, in such a way that the ciphertext size of keyword index is not dependent on the number of underlying keyword in a file. In our design, the complexity of computation and the complexity of the keyword index are at most O ( 2· log (n/2) ) for the worst case, but O(1) for the best case, where n is the number of keyword in a keyword dictionary. We also present the security and the performance analysis to demonstrate that our scheme is both secure and efficient in practice

Pressure-induced tuning of lattice distortion in a high-entropy oxide

As a new class of multi-principal component oxides with high chemical disorder, high-entropy oxides (HEOs) have attracted much attention. The stability and tunability of their structure and properties are of great interest and importance, but remain unclear. By using in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy, and ex situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, here we show the existence of lattice distortion in the crystalline (Ce0.2_{0.2}La0.2_{0.2}Pr0.2_{0.2}Sm0.2_{0.2}Y0.2_{0.2})O2δ_{2−δ } HEO according to the deviation of bond angles from the ideal values, and discover a pressureinduced continuous tuning of lattice distortion (bond angles) and band gap. As continuous bending of bond angles, pressure eventually induces breakdown of the long-range connectivity of lattice and causes amorphization. The amorphous state can be partially recovered upon decompression, forming glass–nanoceramic composite HEO. These results reveal the unexpected flexibility of the structure and properties of HEOs, which could promote the fundamental understanding and applications of HEOs

Genomic monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 uncovers an Nsp1 deletion variant that modulates type I interferon response

The SARS-CoV-2 virus, the causative agent of COVID-19, is undergoing constant mutation. Here, we utilized an integrative approach combining epidemiology, virus genome sequencing, clinical phenotyping, and experimental validation to locate mutations of clinical importance. We identified 35 recurrent variants, some of which are associated with clinical phenotypes related to severity. One variant, containing a deletion in the Nsp1-coding region (D500-532), was found in more than 20% of our sequenced samples and associates with higher RT-PCR cycle thresholds and lower serum IFN-beta levels of infected patients. Deletion variants in this locus were found in 37 countries worldwide, and viruses isolated from clinical samples or engineered by reverse genetics with related deletions in Nsp1 also induce lower IFN-beta responses in infected Calu-3 cells. Taken together, our virologic surveillance characterizes recurrent genetic diversity and identified mutations in Nsp1 of biological and clinical importance, which collectively may aid molecular diagnostics and drug design.Peer reviewe

The application of crop residue has become increasingly important for providing a barrier against water and wind erosion and improving soil organic matter content, infiltration, evaporation, temperature, and soil structure. The objectives of this work were to: (i) estimate maize residue cover (MRC) from Landsat-8 OLI images using seven vegetation indices (VIs) and eight textural features; and (ii) compare the VI method, textural feature method, and combination method (integration of textural features and spectral information) for estimating MRC with partial least squares regression (PLSR). The results showed that the normalized difference tillage index (NDTI), simple tillage index (STI), normalized difference index 7 (NDI7), and shortwave red normalized difference index (SRNDI) were significantly correlated with MRC. The MRC model based on NDTI outperformed (R2 = 0.84 and RMSE = 12.33%) the models based on the other VIs. Band3mean, Band4mean, and Band5mean were highly correlated with MRC. The regression between Band3mean and MRC was stronger (R2 = 0.71 and RMSE = 15.21%) than those between MRC and the other textural features. The MRC estimation accuracy using the combination method (R2 = 0.96 and RMSE = 8.11%) was better than that based on only the VI (R2 = 0.88 and RMSE = 11.34%) or textural feature (R2 = 0.90 and RMSE = 9.82%) methods. The results suggest that the combination method can be used to estimate MRC on a regional scale
