Automated volcanic glass shard counting system for cryptotephra analysis using open-source hardware and software
Cryptotephra, a tephra-derived glass shard or crystal concentration that is not visible to the naked eye, is widely detected and provides a robust synchronized horizon in marine, lacustrine, eolian sediments, and ice core records. However, cryptotephra analyses obtaining glass shard concentrations are time-consuming, and developing a saving time method is thus necessary. Here, machine-learning-based image analysis using the You Only Look Once (YOLO) algorithm based on a convolutional neural network was applied for cryptotephra analysis, and we established the Automated Cryptotephra Image Analysis System (ACIAS). Our established learning model had high accuracy, which was confirmed by Cohen’s Kappa exceeding 0.7. ACIAS involved collecting full-slide images using PiAutoStage and model counting by YOLO. The comparison of manual counting and ACIAS counting showed that ACIAS counting could be an alternative method to manual counting. The concentration of glass shards in the sediment records contained muchinformation, such as the tephra horizon, the sedimentary environment, and the post-depositionalprocess. Thus, this new system is expected to be widely used in various fields.departmental bulletin pape
