    Earthquake recurrence as a record breaking process

    Extending the central concept of recurrence times for a point process to recurrent events in space-time allows us to characterize seismicity as a record breaking process using only spatiotemporal relations among events. Linking record breaking events with edges between nodes in a graph generates a complex dynamical network isolated from any length, time or magnitude scales set by the observer. For Southern California, the network of recurrences reveals new statistical features of seismicity with robust scaling laws. The rupture length and its scaling with magnitude emerges as a generic measure for distance between recurrent events. Further, the relative separations for subsequent records in space (or time) form a hierarchy with unexpected scaling properties

    A fixed-beam bistatic CW experiment designed to measure the temporal statistics of the volume reflectivity produced by hydrometeors at several selected altitudes, scattering angles, and at two frequencies (3.6 and 7.8 GHz) is described. Surface rain gauge data, local meteorological data, surveillance S-band radar, and great-circle path propagation measurements were also made to describe the general weather and propagation conditions and to distinguish precipitation scatter signals from those caused by ducting and other nonhydrometeor scatter mechanisms. The data analysis procedures were designed to provide an assessment of a one-year sample of data with a time resolution of one minute. The cumulative distributions of the bistatic signals for all of the rainy minutes during this period are presented for the several path geometries

    Epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like repeats of human tenascin-C as ligands for EGF receptor.

    Signaling through growth factor receptors controls such diverse cell functions as proliferation, migration, and differentiation. A critical question has been how the activation of these receptors is regulated. Most, if not all, of the known ligands for these receptors are soluble factors. However, as matrix components are highly tissue-specific and change during development and pathology, it has been suggested that select growth factor receptors might be stimulated by binding to matrix components. Herein, we describe a new class of ligand for the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor (EGFR) found within the EGF-like repeats of tenascin-C, an antiadhesive matrix component present during organogenesis, development, and wound repair. Select EGF-like repeats of tenascin-C elicited mitogenesis and EGFR autophosphorylation in an EGFR-dependent manner. Micromolar concentrations of EGF-like repeats induced EGFR autophosphorylation and activated extracellular signal-regulated, mitogen-activated protein kinase to levels comparable to those induced by subsaturating levels of known EGFR ligands. EGFR-dependent adhesion was noted when the ligands were tethered to inert beads, simulating the physiologically relevant presentation of tenascin-C as hexabrachion, and suggesting an increase in avidity similar to that seen for integrin ligands upon surface binding. Specific binding to EGFR was further established by immunofluorescence detection of EGF-like repeats bound to cells and cross-linking of EGFR with the repeats. Both of these interactions were abolished upon competition by EGF and enhanced by dimerization of the EGF-like repeat. Such low affinity behavior would be expected for a matrix-tethered ligand; i.e., a ligand which acts from the matrix, presented continuously to cell surface EGF receptors, because it can neither diffuse away nor be internalized and degraded. These data identify a new class of insoluble growth factor ligands and a novel mode of activation for growth factor receptors

    Comparison of Aircraft Conceptual Design Weight Estimation Methods to the Flight Optimization System

    Weight estimation is critical in the aircraft conceptual design process. The Flight Optimization System (FLOPS) is an aircraft conceptual design tool that has been the primary aircraft synthesis software used by the Systems Analysis and Concepts Directorate at NASA Langley Research Center. FLOPS includes multiple modules that represent aircraft design disciplines. The FLOPS weight module includes estimation methods that are similar in nature to other regression based aircraft preliminary weight estimation methods, however the FLOPS methods were created to use a minimum number of input parameters to limit the effort required by the designer to apply it. As FLOPS has recently been made publically available, this work compares the FLOPS weight estimation methods with several similar methods with the goal of explaining the differences in FLOPS, providing conceptual designers with a brief introduction to the method before attempting to apply it, and providing a reference to inform the development of future weight estimating relationships. In this paper, the Boeing 737-200 is used as a test case to highlight to differences and similarities in the methods

    Effective-Hamiltonian parameters for \emph{ab initio} energy-level calculations of SrCl2_{2}:Yb2+^{2+} and CsCaBr3_{3}:Yb2+^{2+}

    Calculated energy levels from recent \emph{ab initio} studies of the electronic structure of SrCl2_{2}:Yb2+^{2+} and CsCaBr3_{3}:Yb2+^{2+} are fitted with a semi-empirical "crystal-field" Hamiltonian, which acts within the model space 4f14+4f135d+4f136s4f^{14} + 4f^{13}5d + 4f^{13}6s. Parameters are obtained for the minima of the potential-energy curves for each energy level and also for a range of anion-cation separations. The parameters are compared with published results parameters fitted to experimental data and to atomic calculations. The states with significant 4f136s4f^{13}6s character give a good approximation of the impurity-trapped exciton states that appear in the \emph{ab initio} calculations.Comment: Minor revisio

    The oral cavity is the first component of the digestive tract, which is delimited by the lips anteriorly and the oropharynx posteriorly. The oral cavity functions as a protective barrier and is an essential component for speech and swallowing, mastication, digestion, and taste sensation. The oral examination comprises a uniform and consistent inspection of the head and neck and an intraoral evaluation of the hard and soft tissues (see the images below) in conjunction with a thorough medical and dental history. The entire mouth should be inspected regardless of the patient’s chief complaint and reasons for the visit. [1, 2] Good patient’s history and careful examination are important to establish the correct diagnosis and provide appropriate treatment. The physical examination begins with an extraoral examination to identify possible lesions (such as rash, erythema, and pigmentation), swelling or facial asymmetry. The head and neck should be palpated to identify any tenderness, masses and lymphadenopathy. All muscles of mastication and temporomandibular joint should be palpated for tenderness; patients should be asked to open and close the mouth multiple times to evaluate any limited opening, deviations or asymmetries. The cranial nerve examination should be performed to assess possible neurosensory and neuromuscular deficits. A good light source is fundamental for a good intraoral examination. Any intraoral lesion should be described with respect to size, extent, thickness, color, texture, consistency, and tenderness
