Synchronized single electron emission from dynamical quantum dots
We study synchronized quantized charge pumping through several dynamical
quantum dots (QDs) driven by a single time modulated gate signal. We show that
the main obstacle for synchronization being the lack of uniformity can be
overcome by operating the QDs in the decay cascade regime. We discuss the
mechanism responsible for lifting the stringent uniformity requirements. This
enhanced functionality of dynamical QDs might find applications in

Recovery of Evoked Potentials, Metabolic Activity and Behavior in a Mouse Model of Somatosensory Cortex Lesion: Role of the Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule (NCAM)
Understanding the processes that underlie functional recovery after cortical injury is a major challenge for neurobiology and clinical neurology. The aim of the present study was to establish a mouse model of functional recovery that would facilitate the investigation of the molecular and cellular events involved in cortical dynamics. We show that a focal injury of ∼0.5 mm of diameter and 1 mm depth made in the barrel cortex of adult mice induced a transitory deficit that could be characterized using somatosensory evoked potential (SEP), metabolic mapping and a behavioral test. SEP recordings of short latency responses using an epicranial multi-array system showed a decreased cortical activity in the peri-lesion regions 2 weeks after the injury and a partial recovery to normal pattern 6 weeks after the lesion. Delayed SEP signals over the motor cortex were not altered by the injury. Metabolic mapping with [14C]deoxyglucose uptake in the surround of the injury reproduced the time course of deficit and recovery. Finally, a deficit in vibrissae related performance in a gap-crossing test 1 week after injury was followed by a functional recovery in the following 2 weeks. We show in addition that the recovery process is deficient and significantly delayed in NCAM knockout mice lacking all isoforms of NCAM (neural cell adhesion molecule)and PSA-NCAM. These results support the hypothesis that impairment and recovery of functions after focal cortical lesion involves remodeling of intact circuits surrounding the lesion and that the NCAM molecule participate in this process. Imaging dielectric relaxation in nanostructured polymers by frequency modulation electrostatic force microscopy
We have developed a method for imaging the temperature-frequency dependence of the dynamics of nanostructured polymer films with spatial resolution. This method provides images with dielectric compositional contrast well decoupled from topography. Using frequency-modulation electrostatic-force-microscopy, we probe the local frequency-dependent (0.1–100 Hz) dielectric response through measurement of the amplitude and phase of the force gradient in response to an oscillating applied electric field. When the phase is imaged at fixed frequency, it reveals the spatial variation in dielectric losses, i.e., the spatial variation in molecular/dipolar dynamics, with 40 nm lateral resolution. This is demonstrated by using as a model system; a phase separated polystyrene/polyvinyl-acetate (PVAc) blend. We show that nanoscale dynamic domains of PVAc are clearly identifiable in phase images as those which light-up in a band of temperature, reflecting the variations in the molecular/dipolar dynamics approaching the glass transition temperature of PVAc
Occurrence of a Synchronous Hermaphroditic Striped Mullet, Mugil cephalus, from the Northern Gulf of Mexico
A synchronous hermaphroditic striped mullet, Mugil cephalus, was captured offshore of Southwest Pass, Louisiana on 6 December 1996 during the commercial roe mullet fishery harvest. The fish measured 412 mm FL, weighed 824 g and was determined to be 4 years old by otolith analysis. Gross examination of the gonads revealed four lobes: right and left ovaries and right and left testis which represents a unique occurrence among hermaphroditic fish. All lobes ended in a common sperm duct/oviduct with the exception of the left ovary which had no oviduct. Both ovaries contained vitellogenic oocytes and both testis had freely running spermatozoa. Histological examination showed many oocytes undergoing final oocyte maturation, the presence of some post ovulatory follicles and lobules full of tailed spermatozoa. There was no evidence of the intermingling of sperm and oocytes within the gonad. The capture of this fish on the spawning grounds and the advanced stage of both ovarian and testicular development suggests spawning probably would involve the release of both oocytes and spermatozoa

No Compelling Evidence that Self-Reported Personality Traits Explain Basal Testosterone and Cortisol’s Associations with Status-Relevant Behavior
OBJECTIVE: A goal of behavioral neuroendocrinology is to understand how basal hormone levels relate to behavior. Studies of human participants sometimes measure self-reported personality traits, in addition to or instead of direct behavioral observation. Although personality traits often predict their respective behaviors, whether personality explains hormone-behavior relationships remains unclear. METHODS: We obtained data from eight previous studies (total N = 985) that examined baseline testosterone and cortisol as predictors of status-relevant behavior (competitiveness, dominance, risk-taking, aggression, affiliation, and social status). We tested whether the previously reported hormone-behavior relationships are mediated by self-reported personality traits (e.g., trait dominance, prestige, extraversion). As a secondary research question, we also tested whether trait dominance moderated the testosterone-behavior relationships. RESULTS: As expected, self-reported personality traits often predicted status-relevant behaviors, but there was little evidence that traits also correlated with basal testosterone or the testosterone × cortisol interaction. Across all eight studies, personality traits did not significantly mediate hormone-behavior relationships. Indeed, the effect sizes of the hormone-behavior relationships were robust to the inclusion of personality traits as covariates. Further, we did not find strong or consistent evidence that trait dominance moderates the testosterone-behavior association. CONCLUSION: Results suggest that basal testosterone and cortisol predict status-related behavior independent of self-reported personality. We discuss how these results may have broader implications for the physiological mechanisms by which testosterone and cortisol influence behavior, a process that could be unconscious and automatic. Precision Mass Measurements of 129-131Cd and Their Impact on Stellar Nucleosynthesis via the Rapid Neutron Capture Process
Masses adjacent to the classical waiting-point nuclide 130Cd have been
measured by using the Penning- trap spectrometer ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN. We
find a significant deviation of over 400 keV from earlier values evaluated by
using nuclear beta-decay data. The new measurements show the reduction of the N
= 82 shell gap below the doubly magic 132Sn. The nucleosynthesis associated
with the ejected wind from type-II supernovae as well as from compact object
binary mergers is studied, by using state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations.
We find a consistent and direct impact of the newly measured masses on the
calculated abundances in the A = 128 - 132 region and a reduction of the
uncertainties from the precision mass input data
Implementation of a non-emergent medical transportation programme at an integrated health system
OBJECTIVES: To implement a unified non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) service across a large integrated healthcare delivery network.
METHODS: We assessed needs among key organisational stakeholders, then reviewed proposals. We selected a single NEMT vendor best aligned with organisational priorities and implemented this solution system-wide.
RESULTS: Our vendor\u27s hybrid approach combined rideshares with contracted vehicles able to serve patients with equipment and other needs. After 6195 rides in the first year, we observed shorter wait times and lower costs compared with our prior state.
DISCUSSION: Essential lessons included (1) understanding user and patient needs, (2) obtaining complete, accurate and comprehensive baseline data and (3) adapting existing workflows-rather than designing de novo-whenever possible.
CONCLUSIONS: Our implementation of a single-vendor NEMT solution validates the need for NEMT at large healthcare organisations, geographical challenges to establishing NEMT organisation-wide, and the importance of baseline data and stakeholder engagement
