LUIZ EDUARDO SOARES: ALÉM DA ELITE E O NOVO JORNALISMO-LITERÁRIO BRASILEIRO

Especialista em segurança pública no Rio de Janeiro, Luiz Eduardo Soares foi antropólogo e cientista político por décadas na Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) e no Instituto Universitário de Pesquisas do Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJI). Não obstante, sua formação em Literatura na Pontifícia Universidade Católica (PUC-RJ) permanece um aspecto fundamental para seu engajamento político e ativismo social. Ele é autor de mais de vinte livros de ficção e não-ficção, incluindo os best-sellers Elite da Tropa (2006, traduzido ao inglês com o título Elite Squad) e Elite da Tropa 2 (2010), livros cujas adaptações cinematográficas por José Padilha se tornaram os filmes de maior bilheteria na história do cinema brasileiro. Depois de atuar como gestor no Departamento de Segurança Pública em 1999, seu livro de memórias sobre os desafios que enfrentou, Meu Casaco de General: 500 dias no front da segurança pública do Rio de Janeiro (2000), foi finalista do Prêmio Jabuti. Soares voltou para o serviço público em 2003 quando se encarregou da Secretaria Nacional de Segurança Pública na administração Lula, antes de colaborar com o rapper MV Bill na coleção de contos Cabeça de Porco (2005).Nosso encontro ocorreu em outubro de 2019 na Livraria Leonardo da Vinci, localizada a um quarteirão do Largo da Carioca e da rede de estreitas ruas calçadas que são testamento à história colonial do Rio de Janeiro.  Após nosso encontro, Soares está agendado para celebrar o lançamento do seu novo livro Desmilitarizar: segurança pública e direitos humanos (2019) com uma palestra no espaço de eventos da livraria, mas o grande volume de inscrições obrigou a mudança do evento para um local maior. A livraria é underground tanto no sentido literal quanto figurativo, pois Soares me informa que o espaço serviu como ponto de encontro para os intelectuais durante a ditadura militar, quando era o único lugar na cidade onde era possível encomendar livros em inglês. O grande átrio é emoldurado por prateleiras do chão ao teto com um café e mesas ao centro, e é difícil acreditar que o espaço é só a metade do que era antes de um incêndio destruir o imóvel original em 1973. Soares está andando pela seção de ficção quando chego, e é imediatamente óbvio que, por conta da sua experiência tanto de orador quanto de servidor público, ele está tão disposto a conversar com as pessoas quanto a ministrar palestras diante de grandes plateias. Quando pergunto se ele tinha ideia que Elite da Tropa ia se tornar um sucesso no mercado editorial e, consequentemente, destacá-lo publicamente, Soares sorri: “De jeito nenhum.

Getting out of fiction: Luiz Costa Lima, Hayden White, and the debate on the literary

In Control of the Imaginary, Luiz Costa Lima councils against viewing Euclides da Cunha’s foundational text Rebellion in the Backlands as literary or as a discourse of fiction, for he believes that fiction, like mimesis, is misunderstood within a literary context. Costa Lima disagrees with Hayden White’s own metahistorical hermeneutics which posits that literary forms inherently exist within narratives of history. Despite the relative lack of acknowledgment of the other on the part of both critics, their work benefits from a simultaneous reading, as the dialectical nature of their articulations of history becomes evident and informs the other’s approach. Their respective interpretations of LéviStrauss’ notion of ‘getting out of history’ create space for an alternative approach to Cunha’s Rebellion, one which demonstrates that the text exemplifies important elements of the literary and the scientific that both critics touch upon. At the same time, such an approach assists in understanding how Cunha’s text transcends an opposition between fiction and reality precisely because of its incorporation of multiple discourses

Em “Nacional por subtração” (1987), Roberto Schwarz analisa a exclusão das classes marginalizadas do debate sobre o caráter nacional brasileiro. Ao incorporar o argumento de Schwarz, bem como os cinco discursos sobre pobreza de Engbersen (1999), o presente ensaio contextualiza o tema da pobreza e sua discussão na história literária brasileira para posteriormente argumentar que A festa (1976), de Ivan Ã‚ngelo, constitui um exemplo de literatura de pobreza por subtração. Embora Ã‚ngelo exclua a voz do pobre do romance, ele o faz precisamente para salientar a maneira problemática por meio da qual tanto a literatura como a mídia professam representar os socialmente excluídos

Conversion and Colonial History in Icíar Bollaín’s También la lluvia (2010)

This study concerns the representation of colonial Latin American history and the characterisation of Daniel/Hatuey in the 2010 film-about-a-film También la lluvia. A metacinematic work comprising historical study and political commentary, También la lluvia has received mixed critical reactions regarding its portrayal of the historical and social inequalities it analyses. This article examines the ambiguous nature of the work by analysing the motif of conversion. It argues that, by foregrounding the contemporary conversion story of Costa, the film sacrifices both nuanced historical attention to the colonial past it dramatises and sustained development of one of its apparently central characters: Daniel/Hatuey, who is repeatedly converted into narrative and symbolic figures of secondary prominence, despite their importance to the development and legibility of the work as a whole

Paternal Age Alters Social Development in Offspring

Objective Advanced paternal age (APA) at conception has been linked with autism and schizophrenia in offspring, neurodevelopmental disorders that affect social functioning. The current study explored the effects of paternal age on social development in the general population. Method We used multilevel growth modeling to investigate APA effects on socioemotional development from early childhood until adolescence, as measured by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) in the Twins Early Development Study (TEDS) sample. We also investigated genetic and environmental underpinnings of the paternal age effects on development, using the Additive genetics, Common environment, unique Environment (ACE) and gene–environment (GxE) models. Results In the general population, both very young and advanced paternal ages were associated with altered trajectory of social development (intercept: p = .01; slope: p = .03). No other behavioral domain was affected by either young or advanced age at fatherhood, suggesting specificity of paternal age effects. Increased importance of genetic factors in social development was recorded in the offspring of older but not very young fathers, suggesting distinct underpinnings of the paternal age effects at these two extremes. Conclusion Our findings highlight that the APA-related deficits that lead to autism and schizophrenia are likely continuously distributed in the population
