    Total Synthesis of Roseophilin

    No full text
The first total synthesis of the antitumor agent roseophilin 1 is reported. Its intricate macrotricyclic core 2 is obtained by means of a new palladium-catalyzed manifold for the formation of ansa-bridged pyrroles which proceeds via vinyl oxirane 8 and allyl lactone 11 as key intermediates. After conversion of the latter into pyrrolophane 14, a base-induced elimination of the sulfone group followed by the Michael addition of a zincate onto the resulting enone 18 installs the isopropyl substituent in a stereoselective manner. The pyrrolylfuran side chain 3 of roseophilin is prepared from 4-methoxy-2(5H)-furanone (24) and methyl 4-chloropyrrole-2-carboxylate (26) as the starting materials. The appropriate building blocks 25a and 28 derived thereof are combined via a sequence comprising a directed metal−halogen exchange reaction, transmetalation of the resulting lithiopyrrole to the corresponding organozinc compound, a palladium-catalyzed cross coupling of the latter, and a subsequent acid-catalyzed closure of the resulting ketone 29 leading to the furan entity of the target. The triisopropylsilyl-protected side chain 3b is first deprotonated with n-BuLi and then transmetalated with CeCl3 to give a highly nucleophilic organocerium reagent, which readily attacks the sterically hindered 2-(trimethylsilyl)ethoxymethyl-protected keto pyrrole 2c. Deprotection and final dehydration of the tertiary alcohol derivative 30 thus obtained leads to the intact azafulvene chromophore of the natural product and completes our total synthesis of this alkaloid

Culinary Professions in Early Modern Italian Comedy

    Get PDF
This dissertation explores representations of the cook and the deliveryman – il cuoco e lo zanaiuolo – in Renaissance Italian comedy (1509-1560). The figure of the cook is well established in ancient comedy and in Athenaeus’s Deipnosophistae (The Learned Banqueters), and centuries later several playwrights, including Ludovico Ariosto, Agnolo Firenzuola, Alessandro Piccolomini, Giovan Battista Gelli, and Giovanni Maria Cecchi, feature cooks and novel food purveyors in their comedies. In a rapidly changing Early Modern society, culinary professionals provide crucial insight into the sustenance of households in urban centers, mediating how communities interact with their foods. As members of the working class, cooks and deliverymen offer a unique perspective on social dynamics of the period, different from that offered by political and religious courts. Comedies that include these professionals rely, in part, on previous canons to characterize the figures, yet they do so in conversation with contemporary settings and everyday realities of Early Modern Italy. As cooks reappear on the stage throughout the sixteenth century, typified roles establish them as a Renaissance version of the classical stock character. The development of the novel deliveryman as a member of the cast, instead, suggests an increasingly diverse number of professions in Italian city centers and a consequential push towards innovative representations of a more inclusive world in Early Modern theater.Doctor of Philosoph

Pulci's transgressive poetry and two sixteenth-century comedies

    Get PDF
The Morgante attained immediate success around the Italian peninsula and in Europe, sparking the imitation of the two Pulcian paradigms Morgante and Margutte. The attempt to satirize and lampoon contemporary society inspires Pulci's attitude towards his contemporaries in his literary production, and demonstrates key points of similarity among Pulci, Ariosto, and Aretino. In Il negromante, Ariosto adheres to Pulcian features through an analogous character, common themes, and linguistic repetition. In La cortigiana, Aretino illustrates the false pretenses of gentlemen and the wretched conditions of servants by bringing Pulci's characters, themes, and language to light. The aspects of the Morgante that tend towards a comic, realistic language and style natural to comedy create a bond between Pulci and playwrights. These similarities bear witness to the ways in which Pulci and his work flourished in the early Renaissance and how his material, tone, and style were easily adapted in theater.Master of Art

Update on Development of 360V, 28kWh Lithium-Ion Battery

    Get PDF
Engineering unit submodule batteries (EUSB) the 360V, 28kWh EAPU battery were designed and assembled by COM DEV. These submodules consist of Sony Li-Ion 18650HC cells in a 5P-41S array yielding 180V, 1.4 kWh. Tests of these and of substrings and single cells at COM DEV and at JSC under various performance and abuse conditions demonstrated that performance requirements can be met. The thermal vacuum tests demonstrated that the worst case hot condition is the design driver. Deficiencies in the initial diode protection scheme of the battery were identified as a result of test failures. Potential solutions to the scheme are under development and will be presented

Plant diversity patterns in neotropical dry forests and their conservation implications

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from American Association for the Advancement of Science via the DOI in this record.Seasonally dry tropical forests are distributed across Latin America and the Caribbean and are highly threatened, with less than 10% of their original extent remaining in many countries. Using 835 inventories covering 4660 species of woody plants, we show marked floristic turnover among inventories and regions, which may be higher than in other neotropical biomes, such as savanna. Such high floristic turnover indicates that numerous conservation areas across many countries will be needed to protect the full diversity of tropical dry forests. Our results provide a scientific framework within which national decision-makers can contextualize the floristic significance of their dry forest at a regional and continental scale. This paper is the result of the Latin American and Caribbean Seasonally Dry Tropical Forest Floristic Network (DRYFLOR), which has been supported at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh by a Leverhulme Trust International Network Grant (IN-074). Solving the paintshop scheduling problem with memetic algorithms

    No full text
The Paint Shop Scheduling Problem is a recently introduced real-life scheduling problem from the automotive industry. Car parts, which need to be painted, are placed upon carrier devices. These carriers are placed on a conveyor belt and moved into painting cabins, where painting robots paint the parts. The aim is to find an optimized production schedule for the painting of car parts. The Paint Shop Scheduling Problem is a challenging NP-hard problem that imposes constraints like due dates, forbidden carrier and color sequences, maximum and minimum block lengths, and material availability. While the problem has been tackled in literature, there are many problem instances for which the optimal solutions are still unknown. Existing literature is focused on solving the Paint Shop Scheduling Problem with exact and local search approaches. However, population-based algorithms have not yet been applied to solve this problem. In this thesis, we propose a memetic algorithm to solve the Paint Shop Scheduling Problem. Our algorithm follows the typical template of a memetic algorithm. An initial population is generated, followed by the constant evolution of generations. Selection, crossover, mutation, and local improvement operators are applied in each generation. We design three novel crossover operators that consider problem-specific knowledge. Finally, we carefully configure our algorithm, including automated and manual parameter tuning. Using a set of available real-life benchmark instances from the literature, we perform an extensive experimental evaluation of our algorithm. The experimental results show that our memetic algorithm yields competitive results for small- and medium-sized instances and is able to set new upper bounds for some of the problem instances.7

A desktop resource assessment of building stone and slate on the Island of Bute

    Get PDF
Bute has a varied geology, resulting from the presence of the Highland Boundary Fault which crosses the island and brings metamorphic rocks of the Scottish Highlands into contact with Devonian and Carboniferous sedimentary rocks of the Central Belt. The island also has abundant igneous intrusions of various generations, mostly fine-grained, dark basaltic rocks. This diverse geology is reflected in buildings across the island which used local stone and slate, bringing a distinctive character to the built heritage of Bute. Over sixty stone quarries are recorded on Bute. Most of these exploited igneous rock, likely to have been used for roadstone. Large-scale production of building stone was probably limited to Rothesay, where an igneous intrusion at Longhill Quarry provided block for buildings in the town. This ‘greenstone’ was used extensively in buildings up to the mid to late 19th century, when imported sandstone became increasingly used. In rural areas, buildings were typically constructed from the closest available stone type, obtained from any suitable outcrops or small quarries. Dressed stone, sourced from blonde and red sandstone, was also used for early buildings throughout Bute. These sandstones were probably obtained from unrecorded quarries in the Devonian and Carboniferous sediments of the S and E parts of the island
