    This Article suggests that, although previous revisions to the North Carolina Products Liability Act brought progress, more revisions are needed, and these revisions will be best accomplished by incorporating additional measures into the act, especially those that have gained wide acceptance elsewhere. Part I of this Article provides a brief introduction to the early development of products liability law. Part I.A discusses tort-law influences in products liability, and Part I.B focuses on contributions from contract law. Parts II.A and II.B briefly describe MUPLA and the Restatement (Third) of Torts: Products Liability, respectively. Part III discusses the current state of products-liability law in North Carolina and suggests a number of proposed improvements to North Carolina’s products-liability act

    In situ determination of uranium in soil by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry

    The concentration of uranium in soil has been determined for 80 sites in an area suspected to have uranium contamination by in situ laser ablation- inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (LA-ICPAES), utilizing a field-deployable mobile analytical laboratory. For 15 of the 80 sites analyzed, soil samples were collected so that the field LA-ICPAES results could be compared to laboratory-determined values. Uranium concentrations determined in the field by LA-ICPAES for these 15 sites range from \u3c20 parts per million (ppm) by weight to 285 ppm. The uncertainty in the values determined, however, is large relative to the uranium concentrations encountered at this site. The 95% confidence interval (CI) values are approximately 85 ppm. The uranium concentrations determined by laboratory LA- ICPAES analysis range from \u3c20 to 102 ppm (95% CI of approximately 50 ppm); microwave dissolution and subsequent standard addition determination of uranium by solution nebulization ICPAES using an ultrasonic nebulizer yields 19-124 ppm uranium (95% CI of approximately 10 ppm). For 11 of the 15 samples, the field- and laboratory-determined uranium concentrations agree, within the uncertainty of the determined values

    Perspectives of choice and control in daily life for people following brain injury: A qualitative systematic review and meta-synthesis

    Background and Objective: Acquired brain injury (ABI) can result in considerable life changes. Having choice and control over daily life is valued by people following ABI. This meta-synthesis will analyse and integrate international research exploring perspectives of choice and control in daily life following ABI. Methods: Databases were searched from 1980 to 13 January 2022 for eligible qualitative studies. After duplicates were removed, 22,768 studies were screened by title and abstract, and 241 studies received full-text assessment with 56 studies included after pearling. Study characteristics and findings were extracted that related to personal perspectives on choice and control by people with an ABI (including author interpretation and quotes). Data from each study were coded and then segments of coded data across the studies were compared to create multiple broad categories. Findings: Findings were then reduced from categories into 3 overarching themes with 12 subthemes. These themes were: (1) feeling like a second-class citizen; (2) reordering life and (3) choosing a path. Participants with an ABI tussled between their feelings of loss following brain injury and their thinking about how they start to regain control and become agents of their own choices. The themes describe their sense of self, their changed self and their empowered self in relation to ‘choice and control’. Conclusions: Re-engaging with choice and control after ABI is dynamic and can be challenging. Health professionals and supporters need to facilitate a gradual and negotiated return to agency for people following ABI. A sensitive and person-centred approach is needed that considers the readiness of the person with ABI to reclaim choice and control at each stage of their recovery. Clear service or process indicators that are built on lived experience research are needed to facilitate changes in service delivery that are collaborative and inclusive. Patient or Public Contribution: This review included the voices of 765 people living with ABI and was conducted by a diverse team of allied health professionals with practice knowledge and research experience with people following ABI. Twenty-nine of the 56 included studies had participants contributing to their design or analysis

    A Soluble Phase Field Model

    The kinetics of an initially undercooled solid-liquid melt is studied by means of a generalized Phase Field model, which describes the dynamics of an ordering non-conserved field phi (e.g. solid-liquid order parameter) coupled to a conserved field (e.g. thermal field). After obtaining the rules governing the evolution process, by means of analytical arguments, we present a discussion of the asymptotic time-dependent solutions. The full solutions of the exact self-consistent equations for the model are also obtained and compared with computer simulation results. In addition, in order to check the validity of the present model we confronted its predictions against those of the standard Phase field model and found reasonable agreement. Interestingly, we find that the system relaxes towards a mixed phase, depending on the average value of the conserved field, i.e. on the initial condition.     Recombination of Geminate (OH,eaq-) Pairs in Concentrated Alkaline Solutions: Lack of Evidence For Hydroxyl Radical Deprotonation

    Picosecond dynamics of hydrated electrons and hydroxyl radicals generated in 200 nm photodissociation of aqueous hydroxide and 400 nm (3-photon) ionization of water in concentrated alkaline solutions were obtained. No deprotonation of hydroxyl radicals was observed on sub-nanosecond time scale, even in 1-10 M KOH solutions. This result is completely at odds with the kinetic data for deprotonation of OH radical in dilute alkaline solutions. We suggest that the deprotonation of hydroxyl radical is slowed down dramatically in concentrated alkaline solutions.Comment: 12 pages; 2 figures; submitted to Chem. Phys. Let

    Functionally conserved architecture of hepatitis C virus RNA genomes

    Plus-sense RNA viruses cause diverse pathologies in humans. Viral RNA genomes are selected to encode information both in their primary sequences and in their higher-order tertiary structures required to replicate and to evade host immune responses. We interrogated the physical structures of three evolutionarily divergent hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA genomes using high-throughput chemical probing and found, along with all previously known RNA-structure–based regulatory elements, diverse previously uncharacterized structures that impact viral replication. We also characterized strategies by which the HCV genomic RNA structure masks detection by innate immune sensors. This structure-first strategy for comparative analysis of genome-wide RNA structure can be broadly applied to understand the contributions of higher-order genome structure to viral replication and pathogenicity

    Transitions between Inherent Structures in Water

    The energy landscape approach has been useful to help understand the dynamic properties of supercooled liquids and the connection between these properties and thermodynamics. The analysis in numerical models of the inherent structure (IS) trajectories -- the set of local minima visited by the liquid -- offers the possibility of filtering out the vibrational component of the motion of the system on the potential energy surface and thereby resolving the slow structural component more efficiently. Here we report an analysis of an IS trajectory for a widely-studied water model, focusing on the changes in hydrogen bond connectivity that give rise to many IS separated by relatively small energy barriers. We find that while the system \emph{travels} through these IS, the structure of the bond network continuously modifies, exchanging linear bonds for bifurcated bonds and usually reversing the exchange to return to nearly the same initial configuration. For the 216 molecule system we investigate, the time scale of these transitions is as small as the simulation time scale (≈1\approx 1 fs). Hence for water, the transitions between each of these IS is relatively small and eventual relaxation of the system occurs only by many of these transitions. We find that during IS changes, the molecules with the greatest displacements move in small ``clusters'' of 1-10 molecules with displacements of ≈0.02−0.2\approx 0.02-0.2 nm, not unlike simpler liquids. However, for water these clusters appear to be somewhat more branched than the linear ``string-like'' clusters formed in a supercooled Lennar d-Jones system found by Glotzer and her collaborators.Comment: accepted in PR

    Original Climax Films: historicizing the British hardcore pornography film business

    This article presents findings from my research into the British hardcore pornography business. Porn studies has given little coverage to the British pornography business, with much of the academic literature focusing on the American adult entertainment industry. Recently, there has been a rising interest in the historical framework of porn cinemas both in popular culture and in academic work. This article contributes to this debate, taking both a cultural and an economic approach to explore the conditions that led to the emergence of British hardcore production as an alternative economy in the 1960s. In this economy, entrepreneurs make use of new technologies to produce artefacts that are exchanged for an economic benefit, while circumventing laws to distribute their artefacts. To historicize this economy, I draw on ethnohistorical research, which includes interviews with people involved in the British hardcore business and archival research. I argue that a combination of glamour filmmaking, a relaxation of political and cultural attitudes towards sexuality, the location of Soho, London, and emerging technologies for producing films collectively contribute to the emergence of an alternative economy of British hardcore production. I focus specifically on the practices of two entrepreneurs within this economy, Ivor Cook and Mike Freeman, considering how their actions inadvertently created the British hardcore film business, and played a significant role in the development of hardcore production outside of the United Kingdom
