    Relationships between supervisory safety contributions and productivity accomplishment among limestone quarries.

    This study determined the relationship between how employees perceived their supervisors relative to their safety contributions and productivity as measured in limestone tons per man hour. This study was undertaken for the purposes of providing to enterprise safety function manager\u27s research based data which would be useful in ascertaining the safety contributions of their front line supervisors as well as discovering those items beneficial to focused supervisory training. The investigator constructed a survey instrument consisting of a Likert scale evaluation of fifty-seven supervisory safety duties and responsibilities. These statements were the result of a jury of experts revalidation of the original seventy-four items. Response pattern bias necessitated the elimination of seventeen items. The resulting instrument was administered and the sample data collected from 106 respondents employed in eleven quairies. The analysis resulted in the definition of five indices of safety management activities. The developed indices were: Management Policies, Motivational Techniques, Training Practices, Hazard Control and Accident Investigation. The analysis of the partial correlation coefficients identified a significant relationship existing between each of the five indices, comprised of the pertinent safety contribution items, and productivity. Analysis of variance was also performed to assess the differences that existed between individual supervisors as well as the differences in the way supervisors and selected quarries were evaluated relative to key task indices. The analysis showed that the methodology used in the study can be used to identify training needs and assess the safety contribution levels of supervisors

    High-resolution [OI] line spectral mapping of TW Hya consistent with X-ray driven photoevaporation

    Theoretical models indicate that photoevaporative and magnetothermal winds play a crucial role in the evolution and dispersal of protoplanetary disks and affect the formation of planetary systems. However, it is still unclear what wind-driving mechanism is dominant or if both are at work, perhaps at different stages of disk evolution. Recent spatially resolved observations by Fang et al. (2023) of the [OI] 6300 Angstrom spectral line, a common disk wind tracer, in TW Hya revealed that about 80% of the emission is confined to the inner few au of the disk. In this work, we show that state-of-the-art X-ray driven photoevaporation models can reproduce the compact emission and the line profile of the [OI] 6300 Angstrom line. Furthermore, we show that the models also simultaneously reproduce the observed line luminosities and detailed spectral profiles of both the [OI] 6300 Angstrom and the [NeII] 12.8 micron lines. While MHD wind models can also reproduce the compact radial emission of the [OI] 6300 Angstrom line, they fail to match the observed spectral profile of the [OI] 6300 Angstrom line and underestimate the luminosity of the [NeII] 12.8 micron line by a factor of three. We conclude that, while we cannot exclude the presence of an MHD wind component, the bulk of the wind structure of TW Hya is predominantly shaped by a photoevaporative flow.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letter

    Using Social Media to Promote STEM Education: Matching College Students with Role Models

    STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields have become increasingly central to U.S. economic competitiveness and growth. The shortage in the STEM workforce has brought promoting STEM education upfront. The rapid growth of social media usage provides a unique opportunity to predict users' real-life identities and interests from online texts and photos. In this paper, we propose an innovative approach by leveraging social media to promote STEM education: matching Twitter college student users with diverse LinkedIn STEM professionals using a ranking algorithm based on the similarities of their demographics and interests. We share the belief that increasing STEM presence in the form of introducing career role models who share similar interests and demographics will inspire students to develop interests in STEM related fields and emulate their models. Our evaluation on 2,000 real college students demonstrated the accuracy of our ranking algorithm.     Missoula Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory and Analysis, 2003-2008: Toward A Blueprint For Municipal Sustainability

    The City of Missoula has been a signer on the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement for three mayor administrations, with Mayor John Engen renewing the pledge shortly after he took office in 2006. Mayor Engen and the City of Missoula formed a partnership in January 2009 with The University of Montana and Professor Robin Saha of the Environmental Studies Program to complete an emissions inventory of municipal operations. The specific goals of the report are: 1. To present a baseline greenhouse gas emissions inventory for the City of Missoula that quantifies total energy use and associated emissions for municipal operations. 2. To identify major sources of municipal GHG emissions and relative contributions within and among the various sectors examined. 3. To analyze changes and trends in energy use, costs and emissions from Fiscal Years (FY) 2003 to 2008. 4. To identify opportunities and offer recommendations to achieve future municipal GHG emission reductions and energy cost savings

    The dispersal of protoplanetary discs - I. A new generation of X-ray photoevaporation models

    Photoevaporation of planet-forming discs by high-energy radiation from the central star is potentially a crucial mechanism for disc evolution and it may play an important role in the formation and evolution of planetary systems. We present here a new generation of X-ray photoevaporation models for solar-type stars, based on hydrodynamical simulations, which account for stellar irradiation via a significantly improved parametrization of gas temperatures, based on detailed photoionization and radiation transfer calculations. This is the first of a series of papers aiming at providing a library of models which cover the observed parameter space in stellar and disc mass, metallicity, and stellar X-ray properties. We focus here on solar-type stars (0.7 M⊙) with relatively low-mass discs (1 per cent of the stellar mass) and explore the dependence of the wind mass-loss rates on stellar X-ray luminosity. We model primordial discs and transition discs at various stages of evolution. Our two-dimensional hydrodynamical models are then used to derive simple recipes for the mass-loss rates that are suitable for one-dimensional disc evolution and/or planet formation models typically employed for population synthesis studies. Line profiles from typical wind diagnostics ([O I]6300 Å and [Ne II]12.8 Όm) are also calculated for our models and found to be roughly in agreement with previous studies. Finally, we perform a population study of transition discs by means of one-dimensional viscous evolution models including our new photoevaporation prescription and find that roughly a half of observed transition discs cavities and accretion rates could be reproduced by our models

    Searches for Gravitational Waves from Binary Neutron Stars: A Review

    A new generation of observatories is looking for gravitational waves. These waves, emitted by highly relativistic systems, will open a new window for ob- servation of the cosmos when they are detected. Among the most promising sources of gravitational waves for these observatories are compact binaries in the final min- utes before coalescence. In this article, we review in brief interferometric searches for gravitational waves emitted by neutron star binaries, including the theory, instru- mentation and methods. No detections have been made to date.     Untangling the drivers of energy reduction in the UK productive sectors: Efficiency or offshoring?

    The UK has been one of the few countries that has successfully decoupled final energy consumption from economic growth over the past 15 years. This study investigates the drivers of final energy consumption in the UK productive sectors between 1997 and 2013 using a decomposition analysis that incorporates two novel features. Firstly, it investigates to what extent changes in thermodynamic efficiency have contributed to overall changes in sectoral energy intensities. Secondly, it analyses how much of the structural change in the UK economy is driven by the offshoring of energy-intensive production overseas. The results show that energy intensity reductions are the strongest factor reducing energy consumption. However, only a third of the energy savings from energy intensity reductions can be attributed to reductions in thermodynamic efficiency with re- ductions in the exergy intensity of production making up the reminder. In addition the majority of energy savings from structural change are a result of offshoring, which constitutes the second biggest factor reducing energy consumption. In recent years the contributions of all decomposition factors have been declining with very little change in energy consumption after 2009. This suggests that a return to the strong reductions in energy consumption observed between 2001 and 2009 in the UK productive sectors should not be taken for granted. Given that further reductions in UK final energy consumption are needed to achieve global targets for climate change mitigation, additional policy interventions are needed. Such policies should adopt a holistic approach, taking into account all sectors in the UK economy as well as the relationship between the structural change in the UK and in the global supply chains delivering the goods and service for consumption and investment in the UK

    ‘Ethnic group’, the state and the politics of representation

    The assertion, even if only by implication, that ‘ethnic group’ categories represent ‘real’ tangible entities, indeed identities, is commonplace not only in the realms of political and policy discourse but also amongst contemporary social scientists. This paper, following Brubaker (2002), questions this position in a number of key respects: of these three issues will dominate the discussion that follows. First, there is an interrogation of the proposition that those to whom the categories/labels refer constitute sociologically meaningful ‘groups’ as distinct from (mere) human collectivities. Secondly, there is the question of how these categories emerge, i.e. exactly what series of events, negotiations and contestations lie behind their construction and social acceptance. Thirdly, and as a corollary to the latter point, we explore the process of reification that leads to these categories being seen to represent ‘real things in the world’ (ibid.)
