    Hedgehog Signaling Pathway Database: a repository of current annotation efforts and resources for the Hh research community

    The Hedgehog Signaling Pathway Database is a curated repository of information pertaining to the Hedgehog developmental pathway. It was designed to provide centralized access to a wide range of relevant information in an organism-agnostic manner. Data are provided for all genes and gene targets known to be involved in the Hh pathway across various organisms. The data provided include DNA and protein sequences as well as domain structure motifs. All known human diseases associated with the Hh pathway are indexed including experimental data on therapeutic agents and their molecular targets. Hh researchers will find useful information on relevant protocols, tissue cell lines and reagents used in current Hh research projects. Curated content is also provided for publications, grants and patents relating to the Hh pathway. The database can be accessed at

    Serum thyrotropin concentration in children with isolated thyroid nodules.

    OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration and nodule nature in pediatric patients with thyroid nodules, with the aim of identifying a marker able to differentiate benign and malignant nodules. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective analysis of serum TSH concentrations in a multicentric case series of 125 pediatric patients with benign and malignant thyroid nodules. RESULTS: Of the 125 patients, 99 had benign thyroid nodules and 26 had differentiated thyroid cancer (24 papillary and 2 follicular). Final diagnosis was based on surgery in 57 cases and on a benign cytology plus clinical follow-up in 68 cases. Serum TSH concentration was significantly higher in patients with thyroid cancer compared with those with benign nodules (3.23 ± 1.59 mU/L vs 1.64 ± 0.99 mU/L; P < .001). Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that serum TSH was the sole predictor of malignancy (P < .001). Dividing the patient cohort into 5 groups based on serum TSH quintiles (TSH cutoffs 0.40, 1.00, 1.50, 1.80, and 2.80 mU/L), we observed that cancer prevalence increased in parallel with serum TSH (P < .001), with respective rates of 0%, 4%, 16%, 32%, and 52% in the 5 quintile groups. CONCLUSION: Because cases with malignant nodules are most likely seen in the upper normal serum TSH range (ie, >2.8 mU/L), serum TSH concentration can serve as a predictor of thyroid cancer in pediatric patients with thyroid nodules and can inform the decision of when to submit patients to further investigation by cytology

    Doppler velocimetry of spin propagation in a two-dimensional electron gas

    Controlling the flow of electrons by manipulation of their spin is a key to the development of spin-based electronics. While recent demonstrations of electrical-gate control in spin-transistor configurations show great promise, operation at room temperature remains elusive. Further progress requires a deeper understanding of the propagation of spin polarization, particularly in the high mobility semiconductors used for devices. Here we report the application of Doppler velocimetry to resolve the motion of spin-polarized electrons in GaAs quantum wells driven by a drifting Fermi sea. We find that the spin mobility tracks the high electron mobility precisely as a function of T. However, we also observe that the coherent precession of spins driven by spin-orbit interaction, which is essential for the operation of a broad class of spin logic devices, breaks down at temperatures above 150 K for reasons that are not understood theoretically

    We perform a review of various approaches to the implementation of quantum memories, with an emphasis on activities within the quantum memory sub-project of the EU Integrated Project "Qubit Applications". We begin with a brief overview over different applications for quantum memories and different types of quantum memories. We discuss the most important criteria for assessing quantum memory performance and the most important physical requirements. Then we review the different approaches represented in "Qubit Applications" in some detail. They include solid-state atomic ensembles, NV centers, quantum dots, single atoms, atomic gases and optical phonons in diamond.     The combined effects of water and nitrogen on the relationship between a native hemiparasite and its invasive host.

    Stem hemiparasites are dependent on their hosts for water and nitrogen. Most studies, however, assess the influence of one factor on parasite:host associations, thus limiting our mechanistic understanding of their performance in nature. We investigated the combined effects of water and nitrogen (N) availability on both host (Ulex europaeus) and parasite (Cassytha pubescens). Parasite infection significantly decreased host shoot biomass and shoot:root ratio more severely in high water than low water, irrespective of N supply. Parasite stem [N] was significantly higher in high water than low water treatments, regardless of N supply, but parasite biomass didn't vary among treatments. Irrespective of water and N supply, infected plants had significantly lower total, root and nodule biomass, predawn and midday quantum yields, maximum electron transport rates, water potentials and nitrogen concentration [N]. Parasite δ13 C was significantly higher than that of the host. Our results suggest that stem hemiparasites can better extract resources from hosts when water availability is high, resulting in greater impact on the host in these conditions. Where hemiparasitic plants are being investigated as biocontrol for invasive weeds, they may be more effective in wetter habitats than in dry ones

    Comic medievalism is one of the most widespread but least examined forms of postmedieval response. Its combination of comic modality, modern sensibility and historical vision captures what postmedieval audiences have deemed amusing about medieval society. But some instances have been less successful. ‘You had to be there,’ the phrase marking the failure of a comic attempt, and the relationship of that failure to the loss of immediacy, is realized in comic medievalism through the temporal fragility of laughter, historical mediation and temporal paradox. This essay explores some limitpoints to the comic reception of the Middle Ages, focusing especially on its use of anachronism
