Private Flashbulb Memories: The Case of Coming Out Memories

    Get PDF
Participants (N = 83) from Butler University and communities in Indianapolis, IN answered a three part questionnaire regarding their experience revealing their homosexual identity to their parents that included: a narrative, a set of probe questions, and a short demographic section. The narrative and probed recall data were scored in a similar fashion to flashbulb memory narratives with canonical features. The memory of revealing homosexuality to parents displayed flashbulb-like qualities. We found that those most confident in their probed recall answers were those with moderate arousal and few recounts. Also, those reporting moderate affect and fewer recounts had better memory elaboration of their coming out experience. As predicted, if the story of revealing one\u27s homosexuality is retold and rehearsed many times, the effects of the initial arousal disappear. Contrary to our hypothesis, an effect of affect on vividness was not found. The current study provides evidence toward the memories of homosexuals coming out having flashbulb-like characteristics

Fecundity and germination of the invasive aquatic plant, Senegal tea (Gymnocoronis spilanthoides (D. Don) DC.)

Senegal tea, Gymnocoronis spilanthoides (D. Don) DC., (Asteraceae) is an invasive perennial herb of aquatic and wetland habitats. In this study we investigated fecundity (per cent florets setting seed per inflorescence) of two populations in south-eastern Queensland (SEQ) and germination responses to light and temperature. Proportions of capitula that had set seed varied significantly between Ithaca Creek and Strathpine populations (Ithaca = 6.0%, Strathpine = 19.0%) (P <0.001) and both values were greater than previous unpublished estimates (mean number of seeds per capitula; Strathpine = 11.9 ± 1.3; Ithaca = 4.0 ± 0.96). Seeds largely failed to germinate under continuous darkness. Under a 12 h light:12 h dark regime, germination, occurred between five and 20 days after initiating the experiment. Mean germination reached a maximum of 83% under an alternating 12 h at 20°C and 12 h at 30°C regime and was significantly greater than under the other temperature treatments tested (P <0.05). Germination was still relatively high (63%) at lower (10/20°C) temperatures, suggesting that Senegal tea is capable of germinating over most seasons in SEQ. Results suggest that production of germinable seeds is high at the Strathpine infestation and that a seed bank is likely to exist at this site. The light requirement for germination suggests that Senegal tea recruitment would be favoured by soil or canopy disturbance that exposes seeds to light. We suggest that future management would be aided by an understanding of seed bank persistence and the relative importance of clonal and sexual reproduction in the population dynamics of this species

Report on the Third Workshop on Sustainable Software for Science: Practice and Experiences (WSSSPE3)

    Get PDF
This report records and discusses the Third Workshop on Sustainable Software for Science: Practice and Experiences (WSSSPE3). The report includes a description of the keynote presentation of the workshop, which served as an overview of sustainable scientific software. It also summarizes a set of lightning talks in which speakers highlighted to-the-point lessons and challenges pertaining to sustaining scientific software. The final and main contribution of the report is a summary of the discussions, future steps, and future organization for a set of self-organized working groups on topics including developing pathways to funding scientific software; constructing useful common metrics for crediting software stakeholders; identifying principles for sustainable software engineering design; reaching out to research software organizations around the world; and building communities for software sustainability. For each group, we include a point of contact and a landing page that can be used by those who want to join that group's future activities. The main challenge left by the workshop is to see if the groups will execute these activities that they have scheduled, and how the WSSSPE community can encourage this to happen

A shock recovery experiment and its implications for Mercury's surface : The effect of high pressure on porous olivine powder as a regolith analog

We conducted classic dynamic high - pressure experiments on porous San Carlos (SC) olivine powder to examine if and how different shock stages modify corresponding reflectance mid – infrared (MIR) spectra. Microscopic investigation of the thin sections produced of our shocked samples indicates local peak pressures of >60 GPa along with all lower grade shock stages. Spectral analyses of optically identified shock areas were documented and compared in terms of Christiansen Feature (CF) and the position of olivine – diagnostic Reststrahlenbands (RBs). We found that one RB (fundamental vibrations of the orthosilicate - ion) of olivine occurring at 980 cm−1 (corresponding to ≈ 10.2 μm) shows the least energetic shift in the investigated MIR spectra and could therefore serve as a proxy for the presence of olivine in remote sensing application. Furthermore, a peak located at ≈ 1060 cm−1 (≈ 9.4 μm) shows a significant intensity change probably related to the degree of shock exposure or grain orientation effects, as we observe a decline in intensity of this band from our averaged reference olivine spectra of our IRIS database (diffuse reflectance measurement) down to spectra of grains showing mosaicism and recrystallized areas. We also report the presence of a weak band in some of the olivine spectra located at ≈ 1100 cm−1 (9.1 μm) that has an influence on the position of the CF when spectral data of olivine are averaged.Peer reviewe

Continuidade dos estilos parentais através das gerações: transmissão intergeracional de estilos parentais

Parental practices have been investigated during decades and they are considered as important predictive factors in the child development and they provide a model of parental interaction with their children. This research had as objective to investigate the intergenerational transmission of the parental styles. Interviews were conducted with 21 women, from seven distinct families, respecting the trigenerational linearity, using the Adult Attachment Interview developed by George, Kaplan e Main and the Scales of Quality of Familiar Interaction Scales - EQIF of Weber and colaborators. It was used for the data analysis the non-parametric test Mann-Whitney U. Intergenerational transmission was found in 91.7% of the cases. From first to third generation the data showed that fathers were sensibly more authoritarian than the mothers and that they were more submissive. These results show that it is necessary to divulgate the adequated parenting practices as one prevention strategie.
