Optimizations of sub-100 nm Si/SiGe MODFETs for high linearity RF applications
Based on careful calibration in respect of 70 nm n-type strained Si channel S/SiGe modulation doped FETs (MODFETs) fabricated by Daimler Chrysler, numerical simulations have been used to study the impact of the device geometry and various doping strategies on device performance and linearity. The device geometry is sensitive to both RF performance and device linearity. Doped channel devices are found to be promising for high linearity applications. Trade-off design strategies are required for reconciling the demands of high device performance and high linearity simultaneously. The simulations also suggest that gate length scaling helps to achieve higher RF performance, but decreases the linearity
Implicit Bias in Health Professions: From Recognition to Transformation
Implicit bias recognition and management curricula are offered as an increasingly popular solution to address health disparities and advance equity. Despite growth in the field, approaches to implicit bias instruction are varied and have mixed results. The concept of implicit bias recognition and management is relatively nascent, and discussions related to implicit bias have also evoked critique and controversy. In addition, challenges related to assessment, faculty development, and resistant learners are emerging in the literature. In this context, the authors have reframed implicit bias recognition and management curricula as unique forms of transformative learning that raise critical consciousness in both individuals and clinical learning environments. The authors have proposed transformative learning theory (TLT) as a guide for implementing educational strategies related to implicit bias in health professions. When viewed through the lens of TLT, curricula to recognize and manage implicit biases are positioned as a tool to advance social justice
Feedback and coaching
If used thoughtfully and with intent, feedback and coaching will promote learning and growth as well as personal and professional development in our learners. Feedback is an educational tool as well as a social interaction between learner and supervisor, in the context of a respectful and trusting relationship. It challenges the learnerâs thinking and supports the learnerâs growth. Coaching is an educational philosophy dedicated to supporting learnersâ personal and professional development and growth and supporting them to reach their potential. In clinical education, feedback is most effective when it is explicitly distinguished from summative assessment. Importantly, feedback should be about firsthand observed behaviors (which can be direct or indirect) and not about information which comes from a third party. Learners are more receptive to feedback if it comes from a source that they perceive as credible, and with whom they have developed rapport. The coaching relationship between learner and supervisor should also be built on mutual trust and respect. Coaching can be provided in the moment (feedback on everyday clinical activities that leads to performance improvement, even with short interaction with a supervisor) and over time (a longer term relationship with a supervisor in which there is reflection on the learnerâs development and co-creation of new learning goals). Feedback and coaching are most valuable when the learner and teacher exhibit a growth mindset. At the organizational level, it is important that both the structures and training are in place to ensure a culture of effective feedback and coaching in the clinical workplace. Conclusions: Having a thoughtful and intentional approach to feedback and coaching with learners, as well as applying evidence-based principles, will not only contribute in a significant way to their developmental progression, but will also provide them with the tools they need to have the best chance of achieving competence throughout their training

Effective mobilities in pseudomorphic Si/SiGe/Si p-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors with thin silicon capping layers
The room-temperature effective mobilities of pseudomorphic Si/Si0.64Ge0.36/Si p-metal-oxidesemiconductor field effect transistors are reported. The peak mobility in the buried SiGe channel increases with silicon cap thickness. It is argued that SiO2/Si interface roughness is a major source of scattering in these devices, which is attenuated for thicker silicon caps. It is also suggested that segregated Ge in the silicon cap interferes with the oxidation process, leading to increased SiO2/Si interface roughness in the case of thin silicon caps
Brownian bridges to submanifolds
We introduce and study Brownian bridges to submanifolds. Our method involves
proving a general formula for the integral over a submanifold of the minimal
heat kernel on a complete Riemannian manifold. We use the formula to derive
lower bounds, an asymptotic relation and derivative estimates. We also see a
connection to hypersurface local time. This work is motivated by the desire to
extend the analysis of path and loop spaces to measures on paths which
terminate on a submanifold
The origins of Amazonian landscapes: Plant cultivation, domestication and the spread of food production in tropical South America
During the last two decades, new archaeological projects which systematically integrate a variety of plant recovery techniques, along with palaeoecology, palaeoclimate, soil science and floristic inventories, have started to transform our understanding of plant exploitation, cultivation and domestication in tropical South America. Archaeobotanical studies are providing a far greater appreciation of the role of plants in the diets of early colonists. Since ~13ka, these diets relied mainly on palm, tree fruits, and underground tubers, along with terrestrial and riverine faunal resources. Recent evidence indicates two areas of precocious plant cultivation and domestication: the sub-Andean montane forest of NW South America and the shrub savannahs and seasonal forests of SW Amazonia. In the latter area, thousands of anthropic keystone structures represented by forest islands show a significant human footprint in Amazonia from the start of the Holocene. While radiocarbon date databases show a decline in population during the middle Holocene, important developments happened during this epoch, including the domestication of cacao, the adoption of maize and the spread of manioc across the basin. The late Holocene witnessed the domestication of rice and the development of agricultural landscapes characterised by raised fields and Amazonian Dark Earths (ADEs). Our multi-proxy analysis of 23 late Holocene ADEs and two lakes from southern Amazonia provides the first direct evidence of field polyculture agriculture including the cultivation of maize, manioc, sweet potato, squash, arrowroot and leren within closed-canopy forest, as well as enrichment with palms, limited clearing for crop cultivation, and low-severity fire management. Collectively, the evidence shows that during the late Holocene Amazonian farmers engaged in intensive agriculture marked by the cultivation of both annual and perennial crops relying on organic amendments requiring soil preparation and maintenance. Our study has broader implications for sustainable Amazonian futures
