High Q-factor Sapphire Whispering Gallery Mode Microwave Resonator at Single Photon Energies and milli-Kelvin Temperatures
The microwave properties of a crystalline sapphire dielectric whispering
gallery mode resonator have been measured at very low excitation strength
(E/hf=1) and low temperatures (T = 30 mK). The measurements were sensitive
enough to observe saturation due to a highly detuned electron spin resonance,
which limited the loss tangent of the material to about 2e-8 measured at 13.868
and 13.259 GHz. Small power dependent frequency shifts were also measured which
correspond to an added magnetic susceptibility of order 1e-9. This work shows
that quantum limited microwave resonators with Q-factors > 1e8 are possible
with the implementation of a sapphire whispering gallery mode system
The Large Area Radio Galaxy Evolution Spectroscopic Survey (LARGESS): survey design, data catalogue and GAMA/WiggleZ spectroscopy
© 2016 The Authors. We present the Large Area Radio Galaxy Evolution Spectroscopic Survey (LARGESS), a spectroscopic catalogue of radio sources designed to include the full range of radio AGN populations out to redshift z ~ 0.8. The catalogue covers ~800 deg 2 of sky, and provides optical identifications for 19 179 radio sources from the 1.4 GHz Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-cm (FIRST) survey down to an optical magnitude limit of i mod < 20.5 in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) images. Both galaxies and point-like objects are included, and no colour cuts are applied. In collaboration with the WiggleZ and Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) spectroscopic survey teams, we have obtained new spectra for over 5000 objects in the LARGESS sample. Combining these new spectra with data from earlier surveys provides spectroscopic data for 12 329 radio sources in the survey area, of which 10 856 have reliable redshifts. 85 per cent of the LARGESS spectroscopic sample are radio AGN (median redshift z = 0.44), and 15 per cent are nearby star-forming galaxies (median z = 0.08). Low-excitation radio galaxies (LERGs) comprise the majority (83 per cent) of LARGESS radio AGN at z < 0.8, with 12 per cent being high-excitation radio galaxies (HERGs) and 5 per cent radioloud QSOs. Unlike the more homogeneous LERG and QSO sub-populations, HERGs are a heterogeneous class of objects with relatively blue optical colours and a wide dispersion in mid-infrared colours. This is consistent with a picture in which most HERGs are hosted by galaxies with recent or ongoing star formation as well as a classical accretion disc
Contrasting influences of Drosophila white/mini-white on ethanol sensitivity in two different behavioral assays
Background
The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has been used extensively to investigate genetic mechanisms of ethanol-related behaviors. Many past studies in flies, including studies from our laboratory, have manipulated gene expression using transposons carrying the genetic-phenotypic marker mini-white, a derivative of the endogenous gene white. Whether the mini-white transgenic marker or the endogenous white gene influence behavioral responses to acute ethanol exposure in flies has not been systematically investigated.
Methods
We manipulated mini-white and white expression via (i) transposons marked with mini-white, (ii) RNAi against mini-white and white and (iii) a null allele of white. We assessed ethanol sensitivity and tolerance using a previously described eRING assay (based on climbing in the presence of ethanol) and an assay based on ethanol-induced sedation.
Results
In eRING assays, ethanol-induced impairment of climbing correlated inversely with expression of the mini-white marker from a series of transposon insertions. Additionally, flies harboring a null allele of white or flies with RNAi-mediated knockdown of mini-white were significantly more sensitive to ethanol in eRING assays than controls expressing endogenous white or the mini-white marker. In contrast, ethanol sensitivity and rapid tolerance measured in the ethanol sedation assay were not affected by decreased expression of mini-white or endogenous white in flies.
Conclusions
Ethanol sensitivity measured in the eRING assay is noticeably influenced by white and mini-white, making eRING problematic for studies on ethanol-related behavior in Drosophila using transgenes marked with mini-white. In contrast, the ethanol sedation assay described here is a suitable behavioral paradigm for studies on ethanol sedation and rapid tolerance in Drosophila including those that use widely available transgenes marked with mini-white
The WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey: measuring the cosmic expansion history using the Alcock-Paczynski test and distant supernovae
Astronomical observations suggest that today's Universe is dominated by a dark energy of unknown physical origin. One of the most notable results obtained from many models is that dark energy should cause the expansion of the Universe to accelerate: but the expansion rate as a function of time has proved very difficult to measure directly. We present a new determination of the cosmic expansion history by combining distant supernovae observations with a geometrical analysis of large-scale galaxy clustering within the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey, using the Alcock-Paczynski test to measure the distortion of standard spheres. Our result constitutes a robust and non-parametric measurement of the Hubble expansion rate as a function of time, which we measure with 10-15 per cent precision in four bins within the redshift range 0.1 < z < 0.9. We demonstrate, in a manner insensitive to the assumed cosmological model, that the cosmic expansion is accelerating. Furthermore, we find that this expansion history is consistent with a cosmological-constant dark energy
Numerical Simulations of Gravity-Driven Fingering in Unsaturated Porous Media Using a Non-Equilibrium Model
This is a computational study of gravity-driven fingering instabilities in
unsaturated porous media. The governing equations and corresponding numerical
scheme are based on the work of Nieber et al. [Ch. 23 in Soil Water Repellency,
eds. C. J. Ritsema and L. W. Dekker, Elsevier, 2003] in which non-monotonic
saturation profiles are obtained by supplementing the Richards equation with a
non-equilibrium capillary pressure-saturation relationship, as well as
including hysteretic effects. The first part of the study takes an extensive
look at the sensitivity of the finger solutions to certain key parameters in
the model such as capillary shape parameter, initial saturation, and capillary
relaxation coefficient. The second part is a comparison to published
experimental results that demonstrates the ability of the model to capture
realistic fingering behaviour
