    Evolution of E2 transition strength in deformed hafnium isotopes from new measurements on 172^{172}Hf, 174^{174}Hf, and 176^{176}Hf

    The available data for E2 transition strengths in the region between neutron-deficient Hf and Pt isotopes are far from complete. More and precise data are needed to enhance the picture of structure evolution in this region and to test state-of-the-art nuclear models. In a simple model, the maximum collectivity is expected at the middle of the major shell. However, for actual nuclei, this picture may no longer be the case, and one should use a more realistic nuclear-structure model. We address this point by studying the spectroscopy of Hf. We remeasure the 2^+_1 half-lives of 172,174,176Hf, for which there is some disagreement in the literature. The main goal is to measure, for the first time, the half-lives of higher-lying states of the rotational band. The new results are compared to a theoretical calculation for absolute transition strengths. The half-lives were measured using \gamma-\gamma and conversion-electron-\gamma delayed coincidences with the fast timing method. For the determination of half-lives in the picosecond region, the generalized centroid difference method was applied. For the theoretical calculation of the spectroscopic properties, the interacting boson model is employed, whose Hamiltonian is determined based on microscopic energy-density functional calculations. The measured 2^+_1 half-lives disagree with results from earlier \gamma-\gamma fast timing measurements, but are in agreement with data from Coulomb excitation experiments and other methods. Half-lives of the 4^+_1 and 6^+_1 states were measured, as well as a lower limit for the 8^+_1 states. We show the importance of the mass-dependence of effective boson charge in the description of E2 transition rates in chains of nuclei. It encourages further studies of the microscopic origin of this mass dependence.     Clustering, Order, and Collapse in a Driven Granular Monolayer

    Steady state dynamics of clustering, long range order, and inelastic collapse are experimentally observed in vertically shaken granular monolayers. At large vibration amplitudes, particle correlations show only short range order like equilibrium 2D hard sphere gases. Lowering the amplitude "cools" the system, resulting in a dramatic increase in correlations leading either to clustering or an ordered state. Further cooling forms a collapse: a condensate of motionless balls co-existing with a less dense gas.     Grain Dynamics in a Two-dimensional Granular Flow

    We have used particle tracking methods to study the dynamics of individual balls comprising a granular flow in a small-angle two-dimensional funnel. We statistically analyze many ball trajectories to examine the mechanisms of shock propagation. In particular, we study the creation of, and interactions between, shock waves.     First identification of large electric monopole strength in well-deformed rare earth nuclei

    Excited states in the well-deformed rare earth isotopes 154^{154}Sm and 166^{166}Er were populated via ``safe'' Coulomb excitation at the Munich MLL Tandem accelerator. Conversion electrons were registered in a cooled Si(Li) detector in conjunction with a magnetic transport and filter system, the Mini-Orange spectrometer. For the first excited 0+0^+ state in 154^{154}Sm at 1099 keV a large value of the monopole strength for the transition to the ground state of ρ2(E0;02+→0g+)=96(42)⋅10−3\rho^2(\text{E0}; 0^+_2 \to 0^+_\text{g}) = 96(42)\cdot 10^{-3} could be extracted. This confirms the interpretation of the lowest excited 0+0^+ state in 154^{154}Sm as the collective ÎČ\beta-vibrational excitation of the ground state. In 166^{166}Er the measured large electric monopole strength of ρ2(E0;04+→01+)=127(60)⋅10−3\rho^2(\text{E0}; 0^+_4 \to 0^+_1) = 127(60)\cdot 10^{-3} clearly identifies the 04+0_4^+ state at 1934 keV to be the ÎČ\beta-vibrational excitation of the ground state.Comment: submitted to Physics Letters

    Consistency of the Regularization of Gauge Theories by High Covariant Derivatives

    We show that regularization of gauge theories by higher covariant derivatives and gauge invariant Pauli-Villars regulators is a consistent method if the Pauli-Villars vector fields are considered in a covariant in the regulating Pauli-Villars fields is pathological and the original Slavnov proposal in covariant Landau gauge is not correct because of the appearance of massless modes in the regulators which do not decouple when the ultraviolet regulator is removed. In such a case the method does not correspond to the regularization of a pure gauge theory but that of a gauge theory in interaction with massless ghost fields. This explains the problems pointed out by Martin and Ruiz in covariant Landau gauge. However, a minor modification of Slavnov method provides a consistent regularization even for such a case. The regularization that we introduce also solves the problem of overlapping divergences in a way similar to geometric regularization and yields the standard values of the ÎČ\beta and Îł\gamma functions of the renormalization group equations.Comment: 20 pages, latex, 3 Postscript figures (expanded version

    Study of bound states in 12Be through low-energy 11Be(d,p)-transfer reactions

    The bound states of 12Be have been studied through a 11Be(d,p)12Be transfer reaction experiment in inverse kinematics. A 2.8 MeV/u beam of 11Be was produced using the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The outgoing protons were detected with the T-REX silicon detector array. The MINIBALL germanium array was used to detect gamma rays from the excited states in 12Be. The gamma-ray detection enabled a clear identification of the four known bound states in 12Be, and each of the states has been studied individually. Differential cross sections over a large angular range have been extracted. Spectroscopic factors for each of the states have been determined from DWBA calculations and have been compared to previous experimental and theoretical results

    After the successful commissioning of the radioactive beam experiment at ISOLDE (REX-ISOLDE) - an accelerator for exotic nuclei produced by ISOLDE - first physics experiments using these beams were performed. Initial experiments focused on the region of deformation in the vicinity of the neutron-rich Na and Mg isotopes.     Granular Collapse as a Percolation Transition

    Inelastic collapse is found in a two-dimensional system of inelastic hard disks confined between two walls which act as an energy source. As the coefficient of restitution is lowered, there is a transition between a state containing small collapsed clusters and a state dominated by a large collapsed cluster. The transition is analogous to that of a percolation transition.
