    Which aspects of socio-economic status are related to health in mid-aged and older women?

    A population-based study was conducted to validate gender- and age-specific indexes of socio-economic status (SES) and to investigate the associations between these indexes and a range of health outcomes in 2 age cohorts of women. Data from 11,637 women aged 45 to 50 and 9,510 women aged 70 to 75 were analyzed. Confirmatory factor analysis produced four domains of SES among the mid-aged cohort (employment, family unit, education, and migration) and four domains among the older cohort (family unit, income, education, and migration). Overall, the results supported the factor structures derived from another population-based study (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1995), reinforcing the argument that SES domains differ across age groups. In general, the findings also supported the hypotheses that women with low SES would have poorer health outcomes than higher SES women, and that the magnitude of these effects would differ according to the specific SES domain and by age group, with fewer and smaller differences observed among older women. The main exception was that in the older cohort, the education domain was significantly associated with specific health conditions. Results suggest that relations between SES and health are highly complex and vary by age, SES domain, and the health outcome under study.<br /

    Implicating genes, pleiotropy, and sexual dimorphism at blood lipid loci through multi-ancestry meta-analysis

However, the biological pathways underlying these associations are frequently unknown, limiting understanding of these findings and hindering downstream translational efforts such as drug target discovery. Results: To expand our understanding of the underlying biological pathways and mechanisms controlling blood lipid levels, we leverage a large multi-ancestry meta-analysis (N = 1,654,960) of blood lipids to prioritize putative causal genes for 2286 lipid associations using six gene prediction approaches. Using phenome-wide association (PheWAS) scans, we identify relationships of genetically predicted lipid levels to other diseases and conditions. We confirm known pleiotropic associations with cardiovascular phenotypes and determine novel associations, notably with cholelithiasis risk. We perform sex-stratified GWAS meta-analysis of lipid levels and show that 3–5% of autosomal lipid-associated loci demonstrate sex-biased effects. Finally, we report 21 novel lipid loci identified on the X chromosome. Many of the sex-biased autosomal and X chromosome lipid loci show pleiotropic associations with sex hormones, emphasizing the role of hormone regulation in lipid metabolism. Conclusions: Taken together, our findings provide insights into the biological mechanisms through which associated variants lead to altered lipid levels and potentially cardiovascular disease risk.Peer reviewe

    Crossing over: gender and career at midlife

    It has been claimed that many professional career women retire early because they are tired of fighting the male-dominated workplace culture for lesser rewards than their male colleagues. This essentialising view is contradicted by data collected in interviews with a group of professional men and women. In midlife, the women as a group are expanding their public activities, in contrast to the men as a group who have tended to remain in one occupational area. Yet it must also be noted that the career experiences of these people ranged across a spectrum, and that there were women whose careers approximated a "male" pattern, and men who shared the apparently "female" embracing of further challenge. Furthermore there appeared to be little relationship between the kind of career experience a woman had had and her desire to leave the workforce. I argue that to remain within the structuralist paradigm is limiting, and that an analysis of internalised discourses of masculinity and femininity provides a more helpful explanation of the outcomes discussed in this paper

    'Melt down': young women's talk of time and its implications for health, well-being and identity in late modernity

    There is considerable evidence that increased levels of consumption, 'time-pressure' and transitory employment in current post-industrial or 'late-modern' society have implications for health, well-being and leisure. In this paper we focus on the leisure experiences of young women, paying specific attention to issues that link women's leisure, identity, health and well-being in the context of late modernity. Data are drawn from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health. Pointing to differences between modernity and late modernity, with particular attention to quantity and quality of leisure, are narratives about time fragmentation, stress and illness and the importance of locating 'the balance' in young women's lives. The narratives emerged from focus group discussions with young women aged 18-23 years and call into question existing perceptions of young women's time-use and the implications for health and well-being

    Transforming retirement: re-thinking models of retirement to accommodate the experiences of women

    Like other governments in the Western world, the Australian government is re-thinking its retirement policy in response to the ageing of the population. A ‘transitional’ model is being encouraged, which has the aim of extending the working life into the retirement period. This article unpacks the meaning of a transitional phase to women in different family and work situations. Drawing on a larger, Australian Research Council funded project, examining the shift in attitudes towards work and retirement in three generations of Australian women, three different models of retirement are developed which enable women's diverse pathways into retirement to be identified and compared, and policy options considered for enhancing women's transition to retirement. The models also highlight the different effects of workplace flexibility on different groups of women, exposing the economic vulnerability of single mothers
