    Approximate Quantile Computation over Sensor Networks

    Sensor networks have been deployed in various environments, from battle field surveillance to weather monitoring. The amount of data generated by the sensors can be large. One way to analyze such large data set is to capture the essential statistics of the data. Thus the quantile computation in the large scale sensor network becomes an important but challenging problem. The data may be widely distributed, e.g., there may be thousands of sensors. In addition, the memory and bandwidth among sensors could be quite limited. Most previous quantile computation methods assume that the data is either stored or streaming in a centralized site, which could not be directly applied in the sensor environment. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm to compute the quantile for sensor network data, which dynamically adapts to the memory limitations. Moreover, since sensors may update their values at any time, an incremental maintenance algorithm is developed to reduce the number of times that a global recomputation is needed upon updates. The performance and complexity of our algorithms are analyzed both theoretically and empirically on various large data sets, which demonstrate the high promise of our method

    Effects of post-abortion family planning services on contraceptive practices in China : protocol for a clustered randomized controlled trial

    Study objectives: To determine whether integrating post-abortion services in hospital settings in China will increase the contraceptive use and decrease repeat abortion rates. Study design: Three-arms cluster randomised controlled trial in which the unit of randomisation is hospital. Participants: Women seeking induced abortion within 12 weeks of gestation age. Sites: Ninety hospitals from 30 provinces in China will be randomised to the three arms of the study stratified by province. In each province, eligible hospitals will be matched on the characteristics of abortion departments, especially the volume of abortions in the 2 months in the situation survey. Length of follow up: Six months. Intervention: Multiple interventions that aim to increase the use of more effective contraceptive methods, improve user adherence to reduce the unintended pregnancies and repeat induced abortions. Data collection: Data will be collected at four time points, one at baseline(month 0 at the time of enrolment) and twice during intervention (1st 3rd and 6th month after enrolment, respectively). Primary outcome: Unintended pregnancies or repeated induced abortions; immediate contraceptive uptake and the use of modern effective contraceptive methods

    Model Compression for DNN-based Speaker Verification Using Weight Quantization

    DNN-based speaker verification (SV) models demonstrate significant performance at relatively high computation costs. Model compression can be applied to reduce the model size for lower resource consumption. The present study exploits weight quantization to compress two widely-used SV models, namely ECAPA-TDNN and ResNet. Experimental results on VoxCeleb show that weight quantization is effective for compressing SV models. The model size can be reduced multiple times without noticeable degradation in performance. Compression of ResNet shows more robust results than ECAPA-TDNN with lower-bitwidth quantization. Analysis of the layer weights suggests that the smooth weight distribution of ResNet may be related to its better robustness. The generalization ability of the quantized model is validated via a language-mismatched SV task. Furthermore, analysis by information probing reveals that the quantized models can retain most of the speaker-relevant knowledge learned by the original models.Comment: Accepted by INTERSPEECH202

    Induced abortion in 30 Chinese provinces in 2013: a cross-sectional survey

    Background: Galloping economic growth and reform in China in the past 30 years has led to dramatic social changes. Attitudes towards sex and sexual behaviour have changed, and premarital sex has become more acceptable. The methods of contraception have changed, and the use of highly effective or long-acting contraceptive methods tends to be decreasing, especially in urban areas. Abortion is commonly used to end unintended pregnancy. The aim of this study was to survey the current situation of induced abortions in selected hospitals in 30 provinces in China. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 295 randomly selected hospitals in 30 Chinese provinces between April and August, 2013. We collected data using a questionnaire filled by the abortion service providers for all women seeking abortion within 12 weeks of pregnancy during a period of two months. The information included self-reported demographic and economic characteristics, history of induced abortion, and use of contraception. The characteristics of women were summarised with counts (percentages) for categorical variables; mean (SD) and range for age of women. All participants signed a written informed consent of which they received a copy. Ethics approvals were obtained from both ethics committees of the National Research Institution for Family Planning (NRIFP), China, and of the Ghent University, Belgium. Findings: 79 174 women participated in the study (mean age 28∙9 years (SD 1∙7; range 13–58), of whom 27 134 (35%) were undergoing a first induced abortion, 28 637 (37%) a second abortion, and 22 682 (29%) a third or subsequent abortion. About a third of participants (31%) were not married and more than half (61%) were not local residents. The primary reasons for the unintended pregnancy were contraception failure (50%) and non-use of contraception (44%). Interpretation: This is the first nationwide large-scale study in 30 provinces to show that repeated induced abortion is high in China. A family planning programme for young and unmarried people is urgently needed to improve their access to information, advice, and services about contraception and to reduce unintended pregnancies and repeated induced abortion.     Intravenous Busulfan-Cyclophosphamide as a Preparative Regimen Before Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Adult Patients with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

    The use of i.v. busulfan (BU) instead of the oral formulation can improve outcomes in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) by reducing toxicity and transplantation-related mortality (TRM). There are limited reports of i.v. BU used to treat patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The present study was performed to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of i.v. BU/cyclophosphamide (CY) conditioning in adult ALL. We retrospectively analyzed 42 consecutive patients who underwent allo-HSCT with BU/CY conditioning between January 2007 and October 2010 with an HLA-matched donor (sibling, n = 18; unrelated, n = 24). Thirty-three patients were in first complete remission (CR1), 2 were in second complete remission (CR2), and 7 were in a more advanced stage. Median patient age was 28 years (range, 17∼55 years). The median follow-up was 15 months (range, 1∼48 months). Overall, 13 patients died, for a 30-month overall survival of 56.5% ± 10.6% (65.7% ± 12.5% for patients in CR1 vs 25.4% ± 15.5% for those in CR2 or beyond; P < .001). Eleven patients experienced relapse between 2 and 26 months after allo-HSCT, with a 30-month relapse rate (RR) of 40% ± 10.9% (32.0% ± 12.7% for patients in CR1 vs 71.4% ± 17.1% for those in CR2 or beyond; P = .001). The incidence of grade II-IV acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) was 39.2% ± 8.8%, and that of grade III-IV acute GVHD was 7.4% ± 4.1%. The incidence of chronic GVHD was 63.9% ± 11.7%, and that of extensive chronic GVHD was 19.3% ± 7.9%. Only 2 cases of clinically diagnosed veno-occlusive disease (VOD) were documented (4.7%), and 1 of these patients died of severe VOD. Other BU/CY conditioning–associated toxicities were diffuse alveolar hemorrhage in 1 patient and hemorrhagic cystitis in 8 patients. Four patients died due to TRM, for a 30-month TRM of 9.7% ± 4.6%. This study demonstrates that i.v. BU/CY can be considered a feasible conditioning regimen for adult ALL, with low incidences of VOD and TRM

    Trade-induced atmospheric mercury deposition over China and implications for demand-side controls

    Mercury (Hg) is of global concern because of its adverse effects on humans and the environment. In addition to long-range atmospheric transport, Hg emissions can be geographically relocated through economic trade. Here, we investigate the effect of China’s interregional trade on atmospheric Hg deposition over China, using an atmospheric transport model and multiregional input-output analysis. In general, total atmospheric Hg deposition over China is 408.8 Mg yr-1, and 32% of this is embodied in China’s interregional trade, with the hotspots occurring over Gansu, Henan, Hebei, and Yunnan provinces. Interprovincial trade considerably redistributes atmospheric Hg deposition over China, with a range in deposition flux from −104% to +28%. Developed regions, such as the Yangtze River Delta (Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang) and Guangdong, avoid Hg deposition over their geographical boundaries, instead causing additional Hg deposition over developing provinces. Bilateral interaction among provinces is strong over some regions, suggesting a need for joint mitigation, such as the Jing-Jin-Ji region (Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei) and the Yangtze River Delta. Transferring advanced technology from developed regions to their developing trade partners would be an effective measure to mitigate China’s Hg pollution. Our findings are relevant to interprovincial efforts to reduce trans-boundary Hg pollution in China

    Background: Hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is a disaster common critical event which frequently occurs in a variety of clinical scenarios. To investigate the protective effect of Wy14643 (WY) precondition against hepatic ischemia/ reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats and its potential mechanism. Methods: Thirty Sprague–Dawley male rats weighing 220-250 g were randomly divided into three groups (n=10) including the sham-operated +saline group (Sham), the ischemic-reperfusion+ vehicle (IRI), and the WY14643 preconditioning group (WY). The three groups were pretreated with saline, ethanol and WY, at 1 h before ischemia with a concentration of 10 mg/kg , respectively. Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) was induced by clamping blood supply to the left lateral and median lobes of the liver for 90 min. Blood samples and liver tissues were obtained at the end of 4h reperfusion. The serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were measured. The histological changes of hepatic tissues were examanied by HE staining. The expression of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were detected by ELISA and RT-PCR. Moreover, the expression of TLR-4 , I-, Myd88, p65 and PPAR- were detected by western blotting. Result: After 4 h reperfusion, compared with the IRI group, the liver dysfunction (ALT, AST and LDH), damage score, the expression of TNF-α , IL-6, and IL-1β, the protein expression level of TLR4, Myd88, the phosphorylation level of IκB- and p65 in the WY group was significantly decreased (all

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Next-generation DNA sequencing technologies generate tens of millions of sequencing reads in one run. These technologies are now widely used in biology research such as in genome-wide identification of polymorphisms, transcription factor binding sites, methylation states, and transcript expression profiles. Mapping the sequencing reads to reference genomes efficiently and effectively is one of the most critical analysis tasks. Although several tools have been developed, their performance suffers when both multiple substitutions and insertions/deletions (indels) occur together.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We report a new algorithm, Basic Oligonucleotide Alignment Tool (BOAT) that can accurately and efficiently map sequencing reads back to the reference genome. BOAT can handle several substitutions and indels simultaneously, a useful feature for identifying SNPs and other genomic structural variations in functional genomic studies. For better handling of low-quality reads, BOAT supports a "3'-end Trimming Mode" to build local optimized alignment for sequencing reads, further improving sensitivity. BOAT calculates an E-value for each hit as a quality assessment and provides customizable post-mapping filters for further mapping quality control.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Evaluations on both real and simulation datasets suggest that BOAT is capable of mapping large volumes of short reads to reference sequences with better sensitivity and lower memory requirement than other currently existing algorithms. The source code and pre-compiled binary packages of BOAT are publicly available for download at <url>http://boat.cbi.pku.edu.cn</url> under GNU Public License (GPL).     Grand Canonical Adaptive Resolution Simulation for Molecules with Electrons: A Theoretical Framework based on Physical Consistency

    A theoretical scheme for the treatment of an open molecular system with electrons and nuclei is proposed. The idea is based on the Grand Canonical description of a quantum region embedded in a classical reservoir of molecules. Electronic properties of the quantum region are calculated at constant electronic chemical potential equal to that of the corresponding (large) bulk system treated at full quantum level. Instead, the exchange of molecules between the quantum region and the classical environment occurs at the chemical potential of the macroscopic thermodynamic conditions. T he Grand Canonical Adaptive Resolution Scheme is proposed for the treatment of the classical environment; such an approach can treat the exchange of molecules according to first principles of statistical mechanics and thermodynamic. The overall scheme is build on the basis of physical consistency, with the corresponding definition of numerical criteria of control of the approximations implied by the coupling. Given the wide range of expertise required, this work has the intention of providing guiding principles for the construction of a well founded computational protocol for actual multiscale simulations from the electronic to the mesoscopic scale.Comment: Computer Physics Communications (2017), in pres

    Severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy: psychiatric and cognitive problems and brain structure in children

    Background: Two studies have suggested that severe prolonged nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is associated with emotional and behavioral problems in offspring, with smaller sample size and short-term follow-up. Moreover, little information is available on the role of the brain structure in the associations. Methods: In a US-based cohort, the association was investigated between severe prolonged nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (extending after the second trimester and termed SNVP), psychiatric and cognitive problems, and brain morphology, from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, from 10,710 children aged 9–11 years. We validated the emotional including psychiatric findings using the Danish National Cohort Study with 2,092,897 participants. Results: SNVP was significantly associated with emotional and psychiatric problems (t = 8.89, Cohen’s d = 0.172, p = 6.9 × 10−19) and reduced global cognitive performance (t = − 4.34, d = − 0.085, p = 1.4 × 10−5) in children. SNVP was associated with low cortical area and volume, especially in the cingulate cortex, precuneus, and superior medial prefrontal cortex. These lower cortical areas and volumes significantly mediated the relation between SNVP and the psychiatric and cognitive problems in children. In the Danish National Cohort, severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy were significantly associated with increased risks of behavioral and emotional disorders in children (hazard ratio, 1.24; 95% confidence interval, 1.16–1.33). Conclusions: SNVP is strongly associated with psychiatric and cognitive problems in children, with mediation by brain structure. These associations highlight the clinical importance and potential benefits of the treatment of SNVP, which could reduce the risk of psychiatric disorder in the next generation
