    Process Completing Sequences for Resource Allocation Systems with Synchronization

    This paper considers the problem of establishing live resource allocation in workflows with synchronization stages. Establishing live resource allocation in this class of systems is challenging since deciding whether a given level of resource capacities is sufficient to complete a single process is NP-complete. In this paper, we develop two necessary conditions and one sufficient condition that provide quickly computable tests for the existence of process completing sequences. The necessary conditions are based on the sequence of completions of � subprocesses that merge together at a synchronization. Although the worst case complexity is O(2�), we expect the number of subprocesses combined at any synchronization will be sufficiently small so that total computation time remains manageable. The sufficient condition uses a reduction scheme that computes a sufficient capacity level of each resource type to complete and merge all � subprocesses. The worst case complexity is O(�⋅�), where � is the number of synchronizations. Finally, the paper develops capacity bounds and polynomial methods for generating feasible resource allocation sequences for merging systems with single unit allocation. This method is based on single step look-ahead for deadly marked siphons and is O(2�). Throughout the paper, we use a class of Petri nets called Generalized Augmented Marked Graphs to represent our resource allocation systems

    AbstractWe describe a case of a proximal anterior leg mass causing weak great toe dorsiflexion. The lesion was demonstrated on MR imaging as a multilocular cystic lesion within the extensor digitorum longus muscle that was connected to the proximal tibio-fibular joint by a pedicle. Fluid extravasation was present that extended inferiorly from the lesion along the fascial planes into the distal anterior lower leg. At surgery, the lesion was found to be compressing the deep peroneal nerve. The final pathologic diagnosis was peroneal ganglion cyst

    Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of high dose short duration enrofloxacin treatment regimen for uncomplicated urinary tract infections in dogs.

    BackgroundUncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTI) in dogs usually are treated with antimicrobial drugs for 10-14 days. Shorter duration antimicrobial regimens have been evaluated in human patients.HypothesisA high dose short duration (HDSD) enrofloxacin protocol administered to dogs with uncomplicated UTI will not be inferior to a 14-day treatment regimen with amoxicillin-clavulanic acid.AnimalsClient-owned adult, otherwise healthy dogs with aerobic bacterial urine culture yielding ≥ 10(3) CFU/mL of bacteria after cystocentesis.MethodsProspective, multicenter, controlled, randomized blinded clinical trial. Enrolled dogs were randomized to group 1 (enrofloxacin 18-20 mg/kg PO q24h for 3 days) or group 2 (amoxicillin-clavulanic acid 13.75-25 mg/kg PO q12h for 14 days). Urine cultures were obtained at days 0, 10, and 21. Microbiologic and clinical cure rates were evaluated 7 days after antimicrobial treatment was discontinued. Lower urinary tract signs and adverse events also were recorded.ResultsThere were 35 dogs in group 1 and 33 in group 2. The microbiologic cure rate was 77.1 and 81.2% for groups 1 and 2, respectively. The clinical cure rate was 88.6 and 87.9% for groups 1 and 2, respectively. Cure rates between groups did not differ according to the selected margin of noninferiority.Conclusions and clinical importanceHDSD enrofloxacin treatment was not inferior to a conventional amoxicillin-clavulanic acid protocol for the treatment of uncomplicated bacterial UTI in dogs. Further research is warranted to determine if this protocol will positively impact owner compliance and decrease the emergence of antimicrobial resistance

    Adaptive Scattering Transforms for Playing Technique Recognition

    Playing techniques contain distinctive information about musical expressivity and interpretation. Yet, current research in music signal analysis suffers from a scarcity of computational models for playing techniques, especially in the context of live performance. To address this problem, our paper develops a general framework for playing technique recognition. We propose the adaptive scattering transform, which refers to any scattering transform that includes a stage of data-driven dimensionality reduction over at least one of its wavelet variables, for representing playing techniques. Two adaptive scattering features are presented: frequency-adaptive scattering and direction-adaptive scattering. We analyse seven playing techniques: vibrato, tremolo, trill, flutter-tongue, acciaccatura, portamento, and glissando. To evaluate the proposed methodology, we create a new dataset containing full-length Chinese bamboo flute performances (CBFdataset) with expert playing technique annotations. Once trained on the proposed scattering representations, a support vector classifier achieves state-of-the-art results. We provide explanatory visualisations of scattering coefficients for each technique and verify the system over three additional datasets with various instrumental and vocal techniques: VPset, SOL, and VocalSet

    Given that minority group members are underrepresented in the teaching, medical, and legal professions, minority group members often have White teachers, doctors, and lawyers. This is frequently the case even when students, patients and clients would prefer service providers similar to them in racial or ethnic background. This paper identifies possible cultural barriers to effective one-on-one relationships between White teachers, doctors and lawyers and those who receive their services, explores the potential for biased expectations to influence the services provided and outcomes attained, and contrasts the goals of White and minority educators, doctors, and lawyers, arguing that these differences have potentially negative implications for service recipients. Policy approaches to mitigating potential problems caused by the lack of match are considered, as are potential problems arising from an overly narrow emphasis on match

    A rapidly converging domain decomposition method for the Helmholtz equation

    A new domain decomposition method is introduced for the heterogeneous 2-D and 3-D Helmholtz equations. Transmission conditions based on the perfectly matched layer (PML) are derived that avoid artificial reflections and match incoming and outgoing waves at the subdomain interfaces. We focus on a subdivision of the rectangular domain into many thin subdomains along one of the axes, in combination with a certain ordering for solving the subdomain problems and a GMRES outer iteration. When combined with multifrontal methods, the solver has near-linear cost in examples, due to very small iteration numbers that are essentially independent of problem size and number of subdomains. It is to our knowledge only the second method with this property next to the moving PML sweeping method.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 6 tables - v2 accepted for publication in the Journal of Computational Physic

    Evolved orthogonal ribosomes enhance the efficiency of synthetic genetic code expansion

    In vivo incorporation of unnatural amino acids by amber codon suppression is limited by release factor-1–mediated peptide chain termination. Orthogonal ribosome-mRNA pairs function in parallel with, but independent of, natural ribosomes and mRNAs. Here we show that an evolved orthogonal ribosome (ribo-X) improves tRNA_(CUA)-dependent decoding of amber codons placed in orthogonal mRNA. By combining ribo-X, orthogonal mRNAs and orthogonal aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase/tRNA pairs in Escherichia coli, we increase the efficiency of site-specific unnatural amino acid incorporation from ∼ 20% to >60% on a single amber codon and from 20% on two amber codons. We hypothesize that these increases result from a decreased functional interaction of the orthogonal ribosome with release factor-1. This technology should minimize the functional and phenotypic effects of truncated proteins in experiments that use unnatural amino acid incorporation to probe protein function in vivo
