    Photon energy upshift by gravitational waves from a compact source

    We consider the propagation of light from an isolated source that also emits gravitational waves. The eikonal approach is employed to determine the transfer of energy from the gravitational to electromagnetic radiation. A mechanism is found in which a photon "surfs" on the gravitational wave. For black hole events, a significant upshift of photon energy can occur according to a power-law buildup over the radial distance. This surprising effect may be responsible for some of the unexplained high energy phenomena in the cosmos involving gamma rays or other astro-particles

    Dynamics of the entanglement rate in the presence of decoherence

    The dynamics of the entanglement rate are investigated in this paper for pairwise interaction and two special sets of initial states. The results show that for the given interaction and the decoherence scheme, the competitions between decohering and entangling lead to two different results--some initial states may be used to prepare entanglement while the others do not. A criterion on decohering and entangling is also presented and discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    Effective Dynamic Range in Measurements with Flash Analog-to-Digital Convertor

    Flash Analog to Digital Convertor (FADC) is frequently used in nuclear and particle physics experiments, often as the major component in big multi-channel systems. The large data volume makes the optimization of operating parameters necessary. This article reports a study of a method to extend the dynamic range of an 8-bit FADC from the nominal 28\rm{2^8} value. By comparing the integrated pulse area with that of a reference profile, good energy reconstruction and event identification can be achieved on saturated events from CsI(Tl) crystal scintillators. The effective dynamic range can be extended by at least 4 more bits. The algorithm is generic and is expected to be applicable to other detector systems with FADC readout.Comment: 19 pages, 1 table, 10 figure

    Charge ordering in charge-compensated Na0.41CoO2Na_{0.41}CoO_2 by oxonium ions

    Charge ordering behavior is observed in the crystal prepared through the immersion of the Na0.41CoO2Na_{0.41}CoO_2 crystal in distilled water. Discovery of the charge ordering in the crystal with Na content less than 0.5 indicates that the immersion in water brings about the reduction of the Na0.41CoO2Na_{0.41}CoO_2. The formal valence of Co changes from +3.59 estimated from the Na content to +3.5, the same as that in Na0.5CoO2Na_{0.5}CoO_2. The charge compensation is confirmed to arise from the intercalation of the oxonium ions as occurred in the superconducting sodium cobalt oxide bilayer-hydrate.\cite{takada1} The charge ordering is the same as that observed in Na0.5CoO2Na_{0.5}CoO_2. It suggests that the Co valence of +3.5 is necessary for the charge ordering.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Measurement of the Intrinsic Radiopurity of Cs-137/U-235/U-238/Th-232 in CsI(Tl) Crystal Scintillators

    The inorganic crystal scintillator CsI(Tl) has been used for low energy neutrino and Dark Matter experiments, where the intrinsic radiopurity is an issue of major importance. Low-background data were taken with a CsI(Tl) crystal array at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory. The pulse shape discrimination capabilities of the crystal, as well as the temporal and spatial correlations of the events, provide powerful means of measuring the intrinsic radiopurity of Cs-137 as well as the U-235, U-238 and Th-232 series. The event selection algorithms are described, with which the decay half-lives of Po-218, Po-214, Rn-220, Po-216 and Po-212 were derived. The measurements of the contamination levels, their concentration gradients with the crystal growth axis, and the uniformity among different crystal samples, are reported. The radiopurity in the U-238 and Th-232 series are comparable to those of the best reported in other crystal scintillators. Significant improvements in measurement sensitivities were achieved, similar to those from dedicated massive liquid scintillator detector. This analysis also provides in situ measurements of the detector performance parameters, such as spatial resolution, quenching factors, and data acquisition dead time.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figure

    Studies of Prototype CsI(Tl) Crystal Scintillators for Low-Energy Neutrino Experiments

    Crystal scintillators provide potential merits for the pursuit of low-energy low-background experiments. A CsI(Tl) scintillating crystal detector is being constructed to study low-energy neutrino physics at a nuclear reactor, while projects are underway to adopt this technique for dark matter searches. The choice of the geometrical parameters of the crystal modules, as well as the optimization of the read-out scheme, are the results of an R&D program. Crystals with 40 cm in length were developed. The detector requirements and the achieved performance of the prototypes are presented. Future prospects for this technique are discussed.Comment: 32 pages, 14 figure

    Quasinormal modes of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by free static spherically symmetric quintessence: Electromagnetic perturbations

    In this paper, we evaluated the quasinormal modes of electromagnetic perturbation in a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by the static spherically symmetric quintessence by using the third-order WKB approximation when the quintessential state parameter wq w_{q} in the range of 1/3<wq<0-1/3<w_{q}<0. Due to the presence of quintessence, Maxwell field damps more slowly. And when at 1<wq<1/3-1<w_{q}<-1/3, it is similar to the black hole solution in the ds/Ads spacetime.     Chromodynamic Weibel instabilities in relativistic nuclear collisions

    Employing a previously derived formulation, and extending the treatment from purely transverse modes to wave vectors having a longitudinal component, we discuss the prospects for the occurrence of Weibel-type color-current filamentation in high-energy nuclear collisions. Numerical solutions of the dispersion equation for a number of scenarios relevant to RHIC and LHC suggest that modes with (predominantly transverse) wave numbers of several hundred MeV may become moderately agitated during the early collision stage. The emergence of filamentation helps to speed up the equilibration of the parton plasma and it may lead to non-statistical azimuthal patterns in the hadron final state.Comment: 11 pages, RevTex, 13 (e)ps files (revised for PRC

    Three-body decay of the d* dibaryon

    Under certain circumstances, a three-body decay width can be approximated by an integral involving a product of two off-shell two-body decay widths. This ``angle-average'' approximation is used to calculate the πNN\pi NN decay width of the d(Jπ=3+,T=0)d^*(J^\pi=3^+, T=0) dibaryon in a simple Δ2\Delta^2 model for the most important Feynman diagrams describing pion emissions with baryon-baryon recoil and meson retardation. The decay width is found to be about 0.006 (0.07, 0.5) MeV at the dd^* mass of 2065 (2100, 2150) MeV for input dynamics derived from the Full Bonn potential. The smallness of this width is qualitatively understood as the result of the three-body decay being ``third forbidden''. The concept of \ell forbiddenness and the threshold behavior of a three-body decay are further studied in connection with the πNN\pi NN decay of the dibaryon d(Jπ=0,T=0or2)d'(J^\pi=0^-, T=0 or 2) where the idea of unfavorness has to be introduced.
