Intensive monitoring of the strongly variable BL Lac S5 0716+714
The BL Lac object S5 0716+714 was monitored during a multifrequency campaign
in 1996. Preliminary analysis of the optical, ROSAT and RXTE data are
presented. Strong variability on short time scales was observed. The data

A Five-Year Case History of Retained Ownership
A case history of retaining ownership of steer calves from weaning through slaughter was examined for calves born in 1985 through 1989. Calves were reared to weaning at the SDSU Antelope Range Livestock Station and following weaning were managed under a custom feedlot arrangement. Retaining ownership from weaning through slaughter resulted in profits of 215.41, 78.58 and $80.65 (excluding interest on calf) for the 1985 through 1989 calf crops, respectively. Cattle prices, feed costs and postweaning profitability tended to vary over years considerably more than cattle performance
Relativistic treatment of harmonics from impurity systems in quantum wires
Within a one particle approximation of the Dirac equation we investigate a
defect system in a quantum wire. We demonstrate that by minimally coupling a
laser field of frequency omega to such an impurity system, one may generate
harmonics of multiples of the driving frequency. In a multiple defect system
one may employ the distance between the defects in order to tune the cut-off

To the Editor: We remain enthusiastic about gene therapy, despite the slower-than-hoped-for rate of progress and the inefficiency of current adenoviral-mediated and liposomal-mediated CFTR gene transfer. One of the intents of our paper was to alert researchers in the field to problems with the efficiency of the adenovirus and consequently to stimulate new approaches to increase the efficiency of this vector by the use of other serotypes or new dosing strategies
Discovery and Observations of ASASSN-13db, an EX Lupi-Type Accretion Event on a Low-Mass T Tauri Star
We discuss ASASSN-13db, an EX Lupi-type ("EXor") accretion event on the young
stellar object (YSO) SDSS J051011.01032826.2 (hereafter SDSSJ0510)
discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN). Using
archival photometric data of SDSSJ0510 we construct a pre-outburst spectral
energy distribution (SED) and find that it is consistent with a low-mass class
II YSO near the Orion star forming region ( pc). We present
follow-up photometric and spectroscopic observations of the source after the
5.4 magnitude outburst that began in September 2013 and ended
in early 2014. These data indicate an increase in temperature and luminosity
consistent with an accretion rate of yr,
three or more orders of magnitude greater than in quiescence. Spectroscopic
observations show a forest of narrow emission lines dominated by neutral
metallic lines from Fe I and some low-ionization lines. The properties of
ASASSN-13db are similar to those of the EXor prototype EX Lupi during its

Alternative splicing substantially diversifies the transcriptome during early photomorphogenesis and correlates with the energy availability in arabidopsis
Plants use light as source of energy and information to detect diurnal rhythms and seasonal changes. Sensing changing light conditions is critical to adjust plant metabolism and to initiate developmental transitions. Here we analyzed transcriptome-wide alterations in gene expression and alternative splicing (AS) of etiolated seedlings undergoing photomorphogenesis upon exposure to blue, red, or white light. Our analysis revealed massive transcriptome reprograming as reflected by differential expression of ~20% of all genes and changes in several hundred AS events. For more than 60% of all regulated AS events, light promoted the production of a presumably protein-coding variant at the expense of an mRNA with nonsense-mediated decay-triggering features. Accordingly, AS of the putative splicing factor REDUCED RED-LIGHT RESPONSES IN CRY1CRY2 BACKGROUND 1 (RRC1), previously identified as a red light signaling component, was shifted to the functional variant under light. Downstream analyses of candidate AS events pointed at a role of photoreceptor signaling only in monochromatic but not in white light. Furthermore, we demonstrated similar AS changes upon light exposure and exogenous sugar supply, with a critical involvement of kinase signaling. We propose that AS is an integration point of signaling pathways that sense and transmit information regarding the energy availability in plants
Amplitude measurements of Faraday waves
A light reflection technique is used to measure quantitatively the surface
elevation of Faraday waves. The performed measurements cover a wide parameter
range of driving frequencies and sample viscosities. In the capillary wave
regime the bifurcation diagrams exhibit a frequency independent scaling
proportional to the wavelength. We also provide numerical simulations of the
full Navier-Stokes equations, which are in quantitative agreement up to
supercritical drive amplitudes of 20%. The validity of an existing perturbation
analysis is found to be limited to 2.5% overcriticaly.Comment: 7 figure
Vertical transport and electroluminescence in InAs/GaSb/InAs structures: GaSb thickness and hydrostatic pressure studies
We have measured the current-voltage (I-V) of type II InAs/GaSb/InAs double
heterojunctions (DHETs) with 'GaAs like' interface bonding and GaSb thickness
between 0-1200 \AA. A negative differential resistance (NDR) is observed for
all DHETs with GaSb thickness 60 \AA below which a dramatic change in the
shape of the I-V and a marked hysteresis is observed. The temperature
dependence of the I-V is found to be very strong below this critical GaSb
thickness. The I-V characteristics of selected DHETs are also presented under
hydrostatic pressures up to 11 kbar. Finally, a mid infra-red
electroluminescence is observed at 1 bar with a threshold at the NDR valley
bias. The band profile calculations presented in the analysis are markedly
different to those given in the literature, and arise due to the positive
charge that it is argued will build up in the GaSb layer under bias. We
conclude that the dominant conduction mechanism in DHETs is most likely to
arise out of an inelastic electron-heavy-hole interaction similar to that
observed in single heterojunctions (SHETs) with 'GaAs like' interface bonding,
and not out of resonant electron-light-hole tunnelling as proposed by Yu et al.
A Zener tunnelling mechanism is shown to contribute to the background current

Radio Bursts Associated with Flare and Ejecta in the 13 July 2004 Event
We investigate coronal transients associated with a GOES M6.7 class flare and
a coronal mass ejection (CME) on 13 July 2004. During the rising phase of the
flare, a filament eruption, loop expansion, a Moreton wave, and an ejecta were
observed. An EIT wave was detected later on. The main features in the radio
dynamic spectrum were a frequency-drifting continuum and two type II bursts.
Our analysis shows that if the first type II burst was formed in the low
corona, the burst heights and speed are close to the projected distances and
speed of the Moreton wave (a chromospheric shock wave signature). The
frequency-drifting radio continuum, starting above 1 GHz, was formed almost two
minutes prior to any shock features becoming visible, and a fast-expanding
piston (visible as the continuum) could have launched another shock wave. A
possible scenario is that a flare blast overtook the earlier transient, and
ignited the first type II burst. The second type II burst may have been formed
by the same shock, but only if the shock was propagating at a constant speed.
This interpretation also requires that the shock-producing regions were located
at different parts of the propagating structure, or that the shock was passing
through regions with highly different atmospheric densities. This complex
event, with a multitude of radio features and transients at other wavelengths,

Binding Energy of Hydrogen-Like Impurities in Quantum Well Wires of InSb/GaAs in a Magnetic Field
The binding energy of a hydrogen-like impurity in a thin size-quantized wire of the InSb/GaAs semiconductors with Kane’s dispersion law in a magnetic fieldBparallel to the wire axis has been calculated as a function of the radius of the wire and magnitude ofB, using a variational approach. It is shown that when wire radius is less than the Bohr radius of the impurity, the nonparabolicity of dispersion law of charge carriers leads to a considerable increase of the binding energy in the magnetic field, as well as to a more rapid growth of binding energy with growth ofB
