Designing CALL for learning Chinese characters
Despite the enormity of its quantity, printed or written forms of Chinese characters are composed from a limited number of common components. For example, the characters for pond( ), lake( ), stream( ), river ( ), sea( ) and ocean( ) all contain a component in common, a three-dot component representing water. When this clue is explicitly highlighted to students, the learning of Chinese characters can be greatly enhanced. Using a computer to help students to develop this kind of structural awareness about language learning has not yet been thoroughly examined. This paper reports on the design of CALL software based on a pedagogic method which helps students to develop the higher order skills to analyse and categorise Chinese characters by using components. The result of the classroom experiment has shown supportive evidence on the feasibility and the need of integrating the software with an affective and contextual way of teaching Chinese characters.postprin
Pairwise comparison matrices and the error-free property of the decision maker
Pairwise comparison is a popular assessment method either for deriving criteria-weights or for evaluating alternatives according to a given criterion. In real-world applications consistency of the comparisons rarely happens: intransitivity can occur. The aim of the paper is to discuss the relationship between the consistency of the decision maker—described with the error-free property—and the consistency of the pairwise comparison matrix (PCM). The concept of error-free matrix is used to demonstrate that consistency of the PCM is not a sufficient condition of the error-free property of the decision maker. Informed and uninformed decision makers are defined. In the first stage of an assessment method a consistent or near-consistent matrix should be achieved: detecting, measuring and improving consistency are part of any procedure with both types of decision makers. In the second stage additional information are needed to reveal the decision maker’s real preferences. Interactive questioning procedures are recommended to reach that goal
New plasma surface-treated memory alloys: Towards a new generation of "smart" orthopaedic materials
This paper describes the corrosion resistance, surface mechanical properties, cyto-compatibility, and in-vivo performance of plasma-treated and untreated NiTi samples. Nickel-titanium discs containing 50.8% Ni were treated by nitrogen and carbon plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII). After nitrogen plasma treatment, a layer of stable titanium nitride is formed on the NiTi surface. Titanium carbide is also found at the surface after carbon plasma implantation. Compared to the untreated samples, the corrosion resistances of the plasma PIII samples are better by a factor of five and the surface hardness and elastic modulus are better by a factor of two. The concentration of Ni leached into the simulated body fluids from the untreated samples is 30 ppm, whereas that from the plasma-treated PIII are undetectable. Although there is no significant difference in the ability of cells to grow on either surface, bone formation is found to be better on the nitrogen and carbon PIII sample surfaces at post-operation 2 weeks. All these improvements can be attributed to the formation of titanium nitride and titanium carbide on the surface. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.postprin
Bricolage Strategies, Stakeholder Engagement, and the Geographic Expansion of Social Enterprises

Interviews with 37 SE managers unveiled two pivotal bricolage strategies—utilizing SE status–related marketing resources and leveraging available technological resources—as well as how their interplay influences geographical expansion and the contingent roles of stakeholder participation in facilitating their impact. Quantitative studies of 778 U.K. SEs confirm that the predominant facilitator of geographic expansion is the utilization of status-related marketing resources, surpassing the impact of leveraging available technological resources. SEs’ efforts to utilize SE status–related marketing resources should be harmonized with community participation, whereas SEs aiming to leverage available technological resources should align their efforts with employee participation. We also underscore the substitution dynamic between these two bricolage strategies. However, SEs prioritizing employee participation are better positioned to mitigate the challenges arising from this substitution than those emphasizing community participation.The author(s) received no financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article
A business ecosystem perspective of supply chain justice practices: A study of a marina resort supply chain ecosystem in Indonesia
Purpose: We investigate the influence of supply chain (SC) justice practices in a shared value-supplier delivery performance relationship and the contingent role of trust within SC ecosystem operation.
Design/methodology/approach: We collect and analyze dyadic survey data from a marina resort SC ecosystem in Indonesia.
Findings: The results suggest the differential moderating effects of two types of perceived SC justice – perceived procedural justice and perceived interactional justice – on the relation between shared value and supplier delivery performance. More specifically, we find that perceived procedural justice strengthens the shared value-supplier delivery performance relationship, but that perceived interactional justice weakens such relationship. Furthermore, our findings demonstrate a positive three-way interaction effect between shared value, perceived SC justice, and trust on supplier delivery performance.
Originality/value: Our study is the first to introduce the role of SC justice practices in SC ecosystem operation. We examine how shared value interacts with perceived SC justice and trust in order to determine supplier delivery performance
Extraction of Knowledge Rules for the Retrieval of Mesoscale Oceanic Structures in Ocean Satellite Images
The processing of ocean satellite images has as goal the detection of phenomena related with ocean dynamics. In this context, Mesoscale Oceanic Structures (MOS) play an essential role. In this chapter we will present the tool developed in our group in order to extract knowledge rules for the retrieval of MOS in ocean satellite images. We will describe the implementation of the tool: the workflow associated with the tool, the user interface, the class structure, and the database of the tool. Additionally, the experimental results obtained with the tool in terms of fuzzy knowledge rules as well as labeled structures with these rules are shown. These results have been obtained with the tool analyzing chlorophyll and temperature images of the Canary Islands and North West African coast captured by the SeaWiFS and MODIS-Aqua sensors
Promoting employee entrepreneurial attitudes: an investigation of Chinese state-owned enterprises
Drawing from social information processing theory, we explain the relationship among perceived investment in employee development (PIED), psychological climate, and employee entrepreneurial attitudes (EEA). We test our hypotheses by conducting two survey studies of two different Chinese state-owned enterprises (N = 157; N = 112). The results indicate that climates for autonomy and innovation mediate the relationship between PIED and EEA. Furthermore, we differentiate between two types of supervisor behaviour for encouraging creativity in the workplace: promoting collaboration and intellectual stimulation. We find that promoting collaboration enhances the effects of PIED on the climate for autonomy, while intellectual stimulation amplifies the effects of PIED on the climate for innovation. Our research not only extends the current academic literature by investigating the processes (how) and contingencies (when) whereby PIED affects EEA, but also reveals factors for promoting corporate entrepreneurship in the context of Chinese SOEs. Our findings also offer critical insights for managers by suggesting that they can use human resource management practices and supervision tactics to create a working environment that allows corporate entrepreneurship to flourish.Institute for State-Owned Enterprises, Tsinghua Universit
A meta-analysis of long-term effects of conservation agriculture on maize grain yield under rain-fed conditions
Conservation agriculture involves reduced tillage, permanent soil cover and crop rotations to enhance soil fertility and to supply food from a dwindling land resource. Recently, conservation agriculture has been promoted in Southern Africa, mainly for maize-based farming systems. However, maize yields under rain-fed conditions are often variable. There is therefore a need to identify factors that influence crop yield under conservation agriculture and rain-fed conditions. Here, we studied maize grain yield data from experiments lasting 5 years and more under rain-fed conditions. We assessed the effect of long-term tillage and residue retention on maize grain yield under contrasting soil textures, nitrogen input and climate. Yield variability was measured by stability analysis. Our results show an increase in maize yield over time with conservation agriculture practices that include rotation and high input use in low rainfall areas. But we observed no difference in system stability under those conditions. We observed a strong relationship between maize grain yield and annual rainfall. Our meta-analysis gave the following findings: (1) 92% of the data show that mulch cover in high rainfall areas leads to lower yields due to waterlogging; (2) 85% of data show that soil texture is important in the temporal development of conservation agriculture effects, improved yields are likely on well-drained soils; (3) 73% of the data show that conservation agriculture practices require high inputs especially N for improved yield; (4) 63% of data show that increased yields are obtained with rotation but calculations often do not include the variations in rainfall within and between seasons; (5) 56% of the data show that reduced tillage with no mulch cover leads to lower yields in semi-arid areas; and (6) when adequate fertiliser is available, rainfall is the most important determinant of yield in southern Africa. It is clear from our results that conservation agriculture needs to be targeted and adapted to specific biophysical conditions for improved impact
Elevated plasma adiponectin levels in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
BACKGROUND: Adiponectin is an anti-inflammatory adipokine that may play a role in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between adiponectin, interleukin (IL) 6, IL-8 and C-reactive protein (CRP) and COPD by evaluating these biomarkers in ever-smokers with or without the disease. METHOD: Plasma levels of adiponectin, IL-6, IL-8 and CRP were measured using commercially available kits in COPD patients (n = 71), healthy ever-smokers (n = 62) and non-smokers (n = 51). RESULTS: There were significant increases in plasma adiponectin, IL-6 and CRP in COPD patients (median [IQR] 4.39 μg/ml [2.68-6.98], 4.19 pg/ml [<2.40-6.40], 8.75 mg/l [4.26-40.63], respectively) compared to healthy ever-smokers (1.90 μg/ml [0.86-2.86], <2.40 pg/ml [<2.40-2.77], 3.71 mg/l [1.97-10.37 mg/l], respectively, P < 0.001) and non-smokers (1.76 μg/ml [1.34-2.52], <2.40 pg/ml [<2.40-2.78], 3.12 mg/l [2.11-5.71], respectively, P < 0.001). COPD patients had lower plasma IL-8 levels than healthy ever-smokers. Among ever-smokers with or without COPD, plasma adiponectin, IL-6 and CRP levels were inversely correlated with forced expiratory volume in 1 second (% predicted) after adjustment for age, body mass index, smoking status and pack-years. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that in COPD patients, adiponectin might be associated with COPD pathogenesis. © 2010 The Union.postprin
Networking-Bonding Actions, Quality of Ties, and Channel Member Collaboration: Evidence from U.K.-Based Small Firms
We aim to deepen our understanding of the processes through which network-bonding actions affect channel member collaboration in the small firm context. We develop a framework to highlight the mediating roles of quality of ties and moderating role of control mechanisms in such processes. We test our framework using the quantitative method, by analyzing survey from 385 U.K.-based small firms. We find that social interaction tends to affect operation synchronization via goal congruence, though affects intelligence generation via relational embeddedness. Furthermore, contractual governance has a negative moderating effect on the relationship between social interaction and goal congruence
