    First Acetic Acid Survey with CARMA in Hot Molecular Cores

    Acetic acid (CH3_3COOH) has been detected mainly in hot molecular cores where the distribution between oxygen (O) and nitrogen (N) containing molecular species is co-spatial within the telescope beam. Previous work has presumed that similar cores with co-spatial O and N species may be an indicator for detecting acetic acid. However, does this presumption hold as higher spatial resolution observations become available of large O and N-containing molecules? As the number of detected acetic acid sources is still low, more observations are needed to support this postulate. In this paper, we report the first acetic acid survey conducted with the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA) at 3 mm wavelengths towards G19.61-0.23, G29.96-0.02 and IRAS 16293-2422. We have successfully detected CH3_3COOH via two transitions toward G19.61-0.23 and tentatively confirmed the detection toward IRAS 16293-2422 A. The determined column density of CH3_3COOH is 2.0(1.0)×1016\times 10^{16} cm2^{-2} and the abundance ratio of CH3_3COOH to methyl formate (HCOOCH3_3) is 2.2(0.1)×101\times 10^{-1} toward G19.61-0.23. Toward IRAS 16293 A, the determined column density of CH3_3COOH is \sim 1.6 ×1015\times 10^{15} cm2^{-2} and the abundance ratio of CH3_3COOH to methyl formate (HCOOCH3_3) is \sim 1.0 ×101\times 10^{-1} both of which are consistent with abundance ratios determined toward other hot cores. Finally, we model all known line emission in our passband to determine physical conditions in the regions and introduce a new metric to better reveal weak spectral features that are blended with stronger lines or that may be near the 1-2σ\sigma detection limit.Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in the ApJ; Revised citation in session 2, references remove

    Thermoelectric properties of Zn_5Sb_4In_(2-δ)(δ=0.15)

    The polymorphic intermetallic compound Zn_5Sb_4In_(2−δ) (δ = 0.15(3)) shows promising thermoelectric properties at low temperatures, approaching a figure of merit ZT of 0.3 at 300 K. However, thermopower and electrical resistivity changes discontinuously at around 220 K. Measurement of the specific heat locates the previously unknown temperature of the order-disorder phase transition at around 180 K. Investigation of the charge carrier concentration and mobility by Hall measurements and infrared reflection spectroscopy indicate a mixed conduction behavior and the activation of charge carriers at temperatures above 220 K. Zn_5Sb_4In_(2−δ) has a low thermal stability, and at temperatures above 470 K samples decompose into a mixture of Zn, InSb, and Zn_4Sb_3

    Least-squares methods with Poissonian noise: an analysis and a comparison with the Richardson-Lucy algorithm

    It is well-known that the noise associated with the collection of an astronomical image by a CCD camera is, in large part, Poissonian. One would expect, therefore, that computational approaches that incorporate this a priori information will be more effective than those that do not. The Richardson-Lucy (RL) algorithm, for example, can be viewed as a maximum-likelihood (ML) method for image deblurring when the data noise is assumed to be Poissonian. Least-squares (LS) approaches, on the other hand, arises from the assumption that the noise is Gaussian with fixed variance across pixels, which is rarely accurate. Given this, it is surprising that in many cases results obtained using LS techniques are relatively insensitive to whether the noise is Poissonian or Gaussian. Furthermore, in the presence of Poisson noise, results obtained using LS techniques are often comparable with those obtained by the RL algorithm. We seek an explanation of these phenomena via an examination of the regularization properties of particular LS algorithms. In addition, a careful analysis of the RL algorithm yields an explanation as to why it is more effective than LS approaches for star-like objects, and why it provides similar reconstructions for extended objects. We finish with a convergence analysis of the RL algorithm. Numerical results are presented throughout the paper. It is important to stress that the subject treated in this paper is not academic. In fact, in comparison with many ML algorithms, the LS algorithms are much easier to use and to implement, often provide faster convergence rates, and are much more flexible regarding the incorporation of constraints on the solution.     Inhomogeneous ferrimagnetic-like behavior in Gd2/3Ca1/3MnO3 single crystals

    We present a study of the magnetic properties of Gd2/3Ca1/3MnO3 single crystals at low temperatures. We show that this material behave as an inhomogeneous ferrimagnet. In addition to small saturation magnetization at 5 K, we have found history dependent effects in the magnetization and the presence of exchange bias. These features are compatible with microscopic phase separation in the clean Gd2/3Ca1/3MnO3 system studied.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Material

    Disruption of mesoderm formation during cardiac differentiation due to developmental exposure to 13-cis-retinoic acid.

    13-cis-retinoic acid (isotretinoin, INN) is an oral pharmaceutical drug used for the treatment of skin acne, and is also a known teratogen. In this study, the molecular mechanisms underlying INN-induced developmental toxicity during early cardiac differentiation were investigated using both human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). Pre-exposure of hiPSCs and hESCs to a sublethal concentration of INN did not influence cell proliferation and pluripotency. However, mesodermal differentiation was disrupted when INN was included in the medium during differentiation. Transcriptomic profiling by RNA-seq revealed that INN exposure leads to aberrant expression of genes involved in several signaling pathways that control early mesoderm differentiation, such as TGF-beta signaling. In addition, genome-wide chromatin accessibility profiling by ATAC-seq suggested that INN-exposure leads to enhanced DNA-binding of specific transcription factors (TFs), including HNF1B, SOX10 and NFIC, often in close spatial proximity to genes that are dysregulated in response to INN treatment. Altogether, these results identify potential molecular mechanisms underlying INN-induced perturbation during mesodermal differentiation in the context of cardiac development. This study further highlights the utility of human stem cells as an alternative system for investigating congenital diseases of newborns that arise as a result of maternal drug exposure during pregnancy

    All together now: findings from a PCORI workshop to align patient-reported outcomes in the electronic health record

    In recent years, patient-reported outcomes have become increasingly collected and integrated into electronic health records. However, there are few cross-cutting recommendations and limited guidance available in this rapidly developing research area. Our goal is to report key findings from a 2013 Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute workshop on this topic and a summary of actions that followed from the workshop, and present resulting recommendations that address patient, clinical and research/quality improvement barriers to regular use. These findings provide actionable guidance across research and practice settings to promote and sustain widespread adoption of patient-reported outcomes across patient populations, healthcare settings and electronic health record systems

    Bonding and high-temperature reliability of NiFeMo alloy/n-type PbTe joints for thermoelectric module applications

    PbTe is an extremely important thermoelectric (TE) material, due to its high TE conversion efficiency. Consequently, our effort focuses on developing PbTe-based TE modules, which requires developing novel approaches for bonding metallic contacts to PbTe. In this study, Fe, Mo, and NiFeMo alloy foils were directly bonded to n-type PbTe using a rapid hot press at 600, 700, or 800 °C under a pressure of 40 MPa and for various holding times. We find that in the case of Fe and Mo, it is difficult to form a metallurgically bonded high strength joint with PbTe. However, we find that NiFeMo alloy does effectively bond to PbTe at 700 °C, but not at 600 °C. Significant liquid Pb, which might be due to the reaction of PbTe with Ni, is found that penetrates along the NiFeMo grain boundaries near NiFeMo/PbTe joints during bonding at 700 °C where the extent of liquid Pb penetration can be controlled with the time of bonding. Furthermore, the Seebeck coefficient of bulk PbTe with NiFeMo contacts is similar to that without NiFeMo contacts. Finally, the accelerated thermal aging of NiFeMo/PbTe elements at 600 °C for 240 h shows that the failure mechanism of NiFeMo/PbTe joints under operating conditions is the continued formation and penetration of eutectic liquid NiFeMo–PbTe and liquid Pb along the NiFeMo grain boundaries
