    Depicting the tree of life in museums: guiding principles from psychological research

    The Tree of Life is revolutionizing our understanding of life on Earth, and, accordingly, evolutionary trees are increasingly important parts of exhibits on biodiversity and evolution. The authors argue that in using these trees to effectively communicate evolutionary principles, museums need to take into account research results from cognitive, developmental, and educational psychology while maintaining a focus on visitor engagement and enjoyment. Six guiding principles for depicting evolutionary trees in museum exhibits distilled from this research literature were used to evaluate five current or recent museum trees. One of the trees was then redesigned in light of the research while preserving the exhibit’s original learning goals. By attending both to traditional factors that influence museum exhibit design and to psychological research on how people understand diagrams in general and Tree of Life graphics in particular, museums can play a key role in fostering 21st century scientific literacy

    . Likewise, there is little known about the spatiality of outbreaks. We examined the spatial patterns of WBD during a 2004 outbreak at Buck Island Reef National Monument in the US Virgin Islands. colonies with and without WBD.As the search for causation continues, surveillance and proper documentation of the spatial patterns may inform etiology, and at the same time assist reef managers in allocating resources to tracking the disease. Our results indicate that the spatial scale of data collected can drastically affect the calculation of prevalence and spatial distribution of WBD outbreaks. Specifically, we illustrate that higher resolution sampling resulted in more realistic disease estimates. This should assist in selecting appropriate sampling designs for future outbreak investigations. The spatial techniques used here can be used to facilitate other coral disease studies, as well as, improve reef conservation and management

    Adaptive Tree Approximation with Finite Element Functions: A First Look

    We provide an introduction to adaptive tree approximation with finite element functions over meshes that are generated by bisection. This approximation technique can be seen as a benchmark for adaptive finite element methods, but may be also used therein for the approximation of data and coarsening. Correspondingly, we focus on approximation problems related to adaptive finite element methods, the design and performance of algorithms, and the resulting convergence rates, together with the involved regularity. For simplicity and clarity, these issues are presented and discussed in detail in the univariate case. The additional technicalities and difficulties of the multivariate case are briefly outlined
