Double quantum dot turnstile as an electron spin entangler

We study the conditions for a double quantum dot system to work as a reliable electron spin entangler, and the efficiency of a beam splitter as a detector for the resulting entangled electron pairs. In particular, we focus on the relative strengths of the tunneling matrix elements, the applied bias and gate voltage, the necessity of time-dependent input/output barriers, and the consequence of considering wavepacket states for the electrons as they leave the double dot to enter the beam splitter. We show that a double quantum dot turnstile is, in principle, an efficient electron spin entangler or entanglement filter because of the exchange coupling between the dots and the tunable input/output potential barriers, provided certain conditions are satisfied in the experimental set-up.Comment: published version; minor error correcte

Induced sputum derives from the central airways: Confirmation using a radiolabeled aerosol bolus delivery technique

Indirect evidence suggests that induced sputum derives from the surfaces of the bronchial airways. To confirm this experimentally, we employed a radiolabeled aerosol bolus delivery technique that preferentially deposits aerosol in the central airways in humans. We hypothesized that there would be significantly more radioactivity recovered in an induced sputum sample, and greater airways clearance of radiolabeled particles, immediately after a central versus peripheral airways deposition. Ten healthy volunteers underwent radiolabeled aerosol deposition (99mTc sulfur colloid particles) to the central and peripheral airways on separate occasions followed immediately by induced sputum or no sputum (control), while seated in front of a gamma camera. Radioactivity was measured in the selected sputum sample, processed cell pellet, and supernatant fraction. Significantly more radioactivity was present in all portions of the sputum sample after central versus peripheral airways deposition (i.e., selected sample: 15,607 counts ± 2,985 versus 943 counts ± 298, p = 0.001). Clearance from the whole lung was significantly greater 40 min after central versus peripheral airways deposition (48 ± 3% versus 5 ± 1%, p = 0.0001). Compared with control, induced sputum greatly enhanced clearance after central deposition (48 ± 3% versus 11 ± 6%, p = 0.0001), but not after peripheral deposition (5 ± 1% versus 3 ± 0.8%). These results provide direct evidence that induced sputum derives from the central airways with little or no contribution from the peripheral airways

The Cosmic Microwave Background and Helical Magnetic Fields: the tensor mode

We study the effect of a possible helicity component of a primordial magnetic field on the tensor part of the cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropies and polarization. We give analytical approximations for the tensor contributions induced by helicity, discussing their amplitude and spectral index in dependence of the power spectrum of the primordial magnetic field. We find that an helical magnetic field creates a parity odd component of gravity waves inducing parity odd polarization signals. However, only if the magnetic field is close to scale invariant and if its helical part is close to maximal, the effect is sufficiently large to be observable. We also discuss the implications of causality on the magnetic field spectrum.Comment: We have corrected a normalisation error which was pointed out to us by Antony Lewis. It enhances our limits on the magnetic fields by (2\pi)^{3/4} ~

On Vanishing Theorems For Vector Bundle Valued p-Forms And Their Applications

Let F:[0,)[0,)F: [0, \infty) \to [0, \infty) be a strictly increasing C2C^2 function with F(0)=0F(0)=0. We unify the concepts of FF-harmonic maps, minimal hypersurfaces, maximal spacelike hypersurfaces, and Yang-Mills Fields, and introduce FF-Yang-Mills fields, FF-degree, FF-lower degree, and generalized Yang-Mills-Born-Infeld fields (with the plus sign or with the minus sign) on manifolds. When F(t)=t,1p(2t)p2,1+2t1,F(t)=t, \frac 1p(2t)^{\frac p2}, \sqrt{1+2t} -1, and 112t,1-\sqrt{1-2t}, the FF-Yang-Mills field becomes an ordinary Yang-Mills field, pp-Yang-Mills field, a generalized Yang-Mills-Born-Infeld field with the plus sign, and a generalized Yang-Mills-Born-Infeld field with the minus sign on a manifold respectively. We also introduce the EF,gE_{F,g}-energy functional (resp. FF-Yang-Mills functional) and derive the first variational formula of the EF,gE_{F,g}-energy functional (resp. FF-Yang-Mills functional) with applications. In a more general frame, we use a unified method to study the stress-energy tensors that arise from calculating the rate of change of various functionals when the metric of the domain or base manifold is changed. These stress-energy tensors, linked to FF-conservation laws yield monotonicity formulae. A "macroscopic" version of these monotonicity inequalities enables us to derive some Liouville type results and vanishing theorems for pp-forms with values in vector bundles, and to investigate constant Dirichlet boundary value problems for 1-forms. In particular, we obtain Liouville theorems for FF-harmonic maps (e.g. pp-harmonic maps), and FF-Yang-Mills fields (e.g. generalized Yang-Mills-Born-Infeld fields on manifolds). We also obtain generalized Chern type results for constant mean curvature type equations for pp-forms on Rm\Bbb{R}^m and on manifolds MM with the global doubling property by a different approach. The case p=0p=0 and M=RmM=\mathbb{R}^m is due to Chern.Comment: 1. This is a revised version with several new sections and an appendix that will appear in Communications in Mathematical Physics. 2. A "microscopic" approach to some of these monotonicity formulae leads to celebrated blow-up techniques and regularity theory in geometric measure theory. 3. Our unique solution of the Dirichlet problems generalizes the work of Karcher and Wood on harmonic map

OBJECTIVE - Several Studies have suggested an association between specific diabetes treatment and cancer mortality. We studied the association between metformin use and cancer mortality in a prospectively followed cohort. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - in 1998 and 1999,1,353 patients With type 2 diabetes were enrolled in the Zwolle Outpatient Diabetes project Integrating Available Care 0 (ZODIAC) study in the Netherlands. Vital status was assessed in January 2009. Cancer mortality rate was evaluated using Standardized Mortality ratios (SMRs), and the association between metformin use and cancer mortality was evaluated with a Cox proportional hazards model, taking possible confounders into account. RESULTS - Median follow-up time was 9.6 years, average age at baseline was 68 years, and average A1C was 7.5%. Of the patients, 570 died, of which 122 died of malignancies. The SMR for cancer mortality was 1.47 (95% CI 1.22-1.76). In patients taking metformin compared with patients not taking metformin at baseline, the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for cancer mortality was 0.43 (95% Cl 0.23-0.80), and the HR With every increase of I g of metformin was 0.58 (95% CI 0.36-093), CONCLUSIONS - in general, patients with type 2 diabetes are at increased risk for cancer mortality. In our group, metformin use was associated with lower cancer mortality compared with nonuse of metformin. Although the design cannot provide a conclusion about causality, our results suggest a protective effect of metformin on cancer mortality

Zeros of analytic functions, with or without multiplicities

The classical Mason-Stothers theorem deals with nontrivial polynomial solutions to the equation a+b=ca+b=c. It provides a lower bound on the number of distinct zeros of the polynomial abcabc in terms of the degrees of aa, bb and cc. We extend this to general analytic functions living on a reasonable bounded domain ΩC\Omega\subset\mathbb C, rather than on the whole of C\mathbb C. The estimates obtained are sharp, for any Ω\Omega, and a generalization of the original result on polynomials can be recovered from them by a limiting argument.Comment: This is a retitled and slightly revised version of my paper arXiv:1004.359

Confirmation of a pi_1^0 Exotic Meson in the \eta \pi^0 System

The exclusive reaction πpηπ0n\pi^- p \to \eta \pi^0 n, ηπ+ππ0\eta \to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0 at 18 GeV/c/c has been studied with a partial wave analysis on a sample of 23~492 ηπ0n\eta \pi^0 n events from BNL experiment E852. A mass-dependent fit is consistent with a resonant hypothesis for the P+P_+ wave, thus providing evidence for a neutral exotic meson with JPC=1+J^{PC} = 1^{-+}, a mass of 1257±20±251257 \pm 20 \pm 25 MeV/c2/c^2, and a width of 354±64±60354 \pm 64 \pm 60 MeV/c2/c^2. New interpretations of the meson exotics in neutral ηπ0\eta \pi^0 system observed in E852 and Crystal Barrel experiments are discussed.Comment: p3, rewording the paragraph (at the bottom) about the phase variations. p4, rewording paragrath "The second method ..." . p4, at the bottom of paragrath "The third method ..." added consistent with the results of methods 1 and 2

Cosmological Non-Linearities as an Effective Fluid

The universe is smooth on large scales but very inhomogeneous on small scales. Why is the spacetime on large scales modeled to a good approximation by the Friedmann equations? Are we sure that small-scale non-linearities do not induce a large backreaction? Related to this, what is the effective theory that describes the universe on large scales? In this paper we make progress in addressing these questions. We show that the effective theory for the long-wavelength universe behaves as a viscous fluid coupled to gravity: integrating out short-wavelength perturbations renormalizes the homogeneous background and introduces dissipative dynamics into the evolution of long-wavelength perturbations. The effective fluid has small perturbations and is characterized by a few parameters like an equation of state, a sound speed and a viscosity parameter. These parameters can be matched to numerical simulations or fitted from observations. We find that the backreaction of small-scale non-linearities is very small, being suppressed by the large hierarchy between the scale of non-linearities and the horizon scale. The effective pressure of the fluid is always positive and much too small to significantly affect the background evolution. Moreover, we prove that virialized scales decouple completely from the large-scale dynamics, at all orders in the post-Newtonian expansion. We propose that our effective theory be used to formulate a well-defined and controlled alternative to conventional perturbation theory, and we discuss possible observational applications. Finally, our way of reformulating results in second-order perturbation theory in terms of a long-wavelength effective fluid provides the opportunity to understand non-linear effects in a simple and physically intuitive way.Comment: 84 pages, 3 figure

    Exotic Meson Production in the f1(1285)πf_{1}(1285)\pi^{-} System observed in the Reaction πpηπ+ππp\pi^{-} p \to \eta\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{-} p at 18 GeV/c

    This letter reports results from the partial wave analysis of the πππ+η\pi^{-}\pi^{-}\pi^{+}\eta final state in πp\pi^{-}p collisions at 18GeV/c. Strong evidence is observed for production of two mesons with exotic quantum numbers of spin, parity and charge conjugation, JPC=1+J^{PC} = 1^{-+} in the decay channel f1(1285)πf_{1}(1285)\pi^{-}. The mass M=1709±24±41M = 1709 \pm 24 \pm 41 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=403±80±115\Gamma = 403 \pm 80 \pm 115 MeV/c^2 of the first state are consistent with the parameters of the previously observed π1(1600)\pi_{1}(1600). The second resonance with mass M=2001±30±92M = 2001 \pm 30 \pm 92 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=333±52±49\Gamma = 333 \pm 52 \pm 49 MeV/c^2 agrees very well with predictions from theoretical models. In addition, the presence of π2(1900)\pi_{2}(1900) is confirmed with mass M=2003±88±148M = 2003 \pm 88 \pm 148 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=306±132±121\Gamma = 306 \pm 132 \pm 121 MeV/c^2 and a new state, a1(2096)a_{1}(2096), is observed with mass M=2096±17±121M = 2096 \pm 17 \pm 121 MeV/c^2 and width Γ=451±41±81\Gamma = 451 \pm 41 \pm 81 MeV/c^2. The decay properties of these last two states are consistent with flux tube model predictions for hybrid mesons with non-exotic quantum numbers
