    Boundary control of a rotating Timoshenko beam

    The boundary control of a rotating beam is investigated. The beam is modelled by the Timoshenko beam equations, which are a system of two coupled wave equations that include the effects of shearing and the rotational inertia of cross-sections of the beam. The beam, which is pivoted at one end and free at the other, has physical parameters that may vary along the length of the beam. Conditions are found for which both the angle of rotation and the vibrations of the beam may be controlled by applying a force at the free end and a torque at the pivoted end. This is an improvement on previous work of the first author, who showed only that the vibrations may be controlled

    Since the definition of the High Performance Fortran (HPF) standard, we have been maintaining a suite of application kernel codes with the aim of using them to evaluate the available compilers. This paper presents the results and conclusions from this study, for sixteen codes, on compilers from IBM, DEC, and the Portland Group Inc. (PGI), and on three machines: a DEC Alphafarm, an IBM SP-2, and a Cray T3D. From this, we hope to show the prospective HPF user that scalable performance is possible with modest effort, yet also where the current weaknesses lay

    The Utilization of Heat Exchangers for Energy Conservation in Air Conditioning

    This paper investigates the characteristics of heat exchanger (HPHE) as an efficient coolness recovery unit in air conditioning through experimental studies. It was conducted under a multiple-nozzle code tester based on the ASHRAE standards. The wind tunnel was subjected to airflow with considerable variation in its inlet air temperature. Among the factors being investigated are the air velocity, inlet and outlet air temperatures, overall efficiency and the number of rows in longitudinal direction. The data obtained were compared with the results predicted by previous theoretical studies. Good agreement was observed

    The surge in the popularity of the World Wide Web (WWW) has corresponded to a decreasing market for specialised high performance computers. This paper discusses how, by making use of technology developed from the broader end of the computing pyramid, much of the past decade\u27s work in distributed computing can be realised in the context of the larger WWW market. Not only do these new technologies offer fresh possibilities, but their pace of development is unlikely to be matched by the traditional high performance research community.     Analysis of two pairing-based three-party password authenticated key exchange protocols

    Password-Authenticated Key Exchange (PAKE) protocols allow parties to share secret keys in an authentic manner based on an easily memorizable password. Recently, Nam et al. showed that a provably secure three-party password-based authenticated key exchange protocol using Weil pairing by Wen et al. is vulnerable to a man-in-the-middle attack. In doing so, Nam et al. showed the flaws in the proof of Wen et al. and described how to fix the problem so that their attack no longer works. In this paper, we show that both Wen et al. and Nam et al. variants fall to key compromise impersonation by any adversary. Our results underline the fact that although the provable security approach is necessary to designing PAKEs, gaps still exist between what can be proven and what are really secure in practice

    Delayed presentation of symptomatic breast cancers in Hong Kong: Experience in a public cancer centre

    Objective Delayed presentation is an important obstacle to improving cancer treatment outcomes. We aimed to study the magnitude of this problem in Hong Kong and the factors associated with delayed presentation of patients with symptomatic breast cancers. Design Retrospective study using self-administered questionnaires. Setting Clinical Oncology Department in a regional public hospital in Hong Kong. Patients A total of 158 Chinese women with breast cancer referred to our hospital between October 2006 and December 2007 consented to participate in this study. Among these, 59 (37%) patients were referred after having surgery in private sector. Results The mean total delay (from first symptom to treatment) was 22 weeks. The mean patient delay (from first symptom to first consultation) was 13 weeks, constituting the largest component (60%) of the total delay. After symptom onset, the delay exceeded 12 weeks for consulting a doctor in 29%, and for receipt of treatment in 52% of them. Low family income (<HK$5000 per month; P<0.001) and surgery in public hospitals (P=0.013) were both independent predictors of patient delay. Surgery in public hospitals (P=0.006) and low family income (P=0.005) were the only predictors of doctor/system delay and total delay, respectively. Conclusions Delayed presentation and treatment of symptomatic breast cancer remains an important issue in Hong Kong. Apart from socio-economic factors, limited access to public medical care was likely an important contributing factor in delays related to patients as well as to doctor/system.published_or_final_versio

    The Relationship between Mold Exposure and Allergic Response in Post-Katrina New Orleans

    Objectives. The study's objective was to examine the relation between mold/dampness exposure and mold sensitization among residents of Greater New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. Methods. Patients were recruited from the Allergy Clinic of a major medical facility. Any patient receiving a skin prick test for one of 24 molds between December 1, 2005 and December 31, 2008 was eligible for the study. Exposure was assessed using standardized questionnaires. Positive mold reactivity was defined as a wheal diameter >3 mm to any mold genera. Results. Approximately 57% of participants tested positive to any indoor allergen, 10% to any mold. Over half of respondents had significant home damage, 34% reported dampness/mold in their home, half engaged in renovation, and one-third lived in a home undergoing renovation. Despite extensive exposure, and multiple measures of exposure, we found no relationship between mold/dampness exposure and sensitivity to mold allergens. Conclusions. These results along with results of earlier research indicate no excess risk of adverse respiratory effects for residents living in New Orleans after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina

    Phase Segregation Dynamics in Particle Systems with Long Range Interactions I: Macroscopic Limits

    We present and discuss the derivation of a nonlinear non-local integro-differential equation for the macroscopic time evolution of the conserved order parameter of a binary alloy undergoing phase segregation. Our model is a d-dimensional lattice gas evolving via Kawasaki exchange dynamics, i.e. a (Poisson) nearest-neighbor exchange process, reversible with respect to the Gibbs measure for a Hamiltonian which includes both short range (local) and long range (nonlocal) interactions. A rigorous derivation is presented in the case in which there is no local interaction. In a subsequent paper (part II), we discuss the phase segregation phenomena in the model. In particular we argue that the phase boundary evolutions, arising as sharp interface limits of the family of equations derived in this paper, are the same as the ones obtained from the corresponding limits for the Cahn-Hilliard equation.Comment: amstex with macros (included in the file), tex twice, 20 page
