Dual purpose optical instrument capable of simultaneously acting as spectrometer and diffractometer

    Get PDF
A dual purpose optical instrument is described capable of simultaneously acting as a spectrometer and diffractometer to respectively perform elemental and structural analysis of an unknown sample. The diffractometer portion of the instrument employs a modified form of Seeman-Bohlin focusing which involves providing a line source of X-rays, a sample, and a detector, all on the same focal circle. The spectrometer portion of the instrument employs a fixedly mounted X-ray energy detector mounted outside of the plane of the focal circle

Jet array impingement flow distributions and heat transfer characteristics. Effects of initial crossflow and nonuniform array geometry

    Get PDF
Two-dimensional arrays of circular air jets impinging on a heat transfer surface parallel to the jet orifice plate are considered. The jet flow, after impingement, is constrained to exit in a single direction along the channel formed by the jet orifice plate and the heat transfer surface. The configurations considered are intended to model those of interest in current and contemplated gas turbine airfoil midchord cooling applications. The effects of an initial crossflow which approaches the array through an upstream extension of the channel are considered. Flow distributions as well as heat transfer coefficients and adiabatic wall temperatures resolved to one streamwise hole spacing were measured as a function of the initial crossflow rate and temperature relative to the jet flow rate and temperature. Both Nusselt number profiles and dimensionless adiabatic wall temperature (effectiveness) profiles are presented and discussed. Special test results which show a significant reduction of jet orifice discharge coefficients owing to the effect of a confined crossflow are also presented, along with a flow distribution model which incorporates those effects. A nonuniform array flow distribution model is developed and validated

Structural and magnetic properties of an InGaAs/Fe3_3Si superlattice in cylindrical geometry

The structure and the magnetic properties of an InGaAs/Fe3Si superlattice in a cylindrical geometry are investigated by electron microscopy techniques, x-ray diffraction and magnetometry. To form a radial superlattice, a pseudomorphic InGaAs/Fe3As bilayer has been released from its substrate self-forming into a rolled-up microtube. Oxide-free interfaces as well as areas of crystalline bonding are observed and an overall lattice mismatch between succeeding layers is determined. The cylindrical symmetry of the final radial superlattice shows a significant effect on the magnetization behavior of the rolled-up layers

Thermodynamic formalism for contracting Lorenz flows

We study the expansion properties of the contracting Lorenz flow introduced by Rovella via thermodynamic formalism. Specifically, we prove the existence of an equilibrium state for the natural potential ϕ^t(x,y,z):=tlogJ(x,y,z)cu\hat\phi_t(x,y, z):=-t\log J_{(x, y, z)}^{cu} for the contracting Lorenz flow and for tt in an interval containing [0,1][0,1]. We also analyse the Lyapunov spectrum of the flow in terms of the pressure

Energy Spectra Between 10 and Several Hundred GeV/Nucleon for Elements from _(18)Ar to _(23)V: Results from HEAO-3

We report updates of recently published results on cosmic ray energy spectra of the sub-iron nuclei. This paper is based on the following analysis and improvements : a) a better analysis of the charge resolution of the instrument, b) availability of more recent charge-changing cross sections necessary to correct the abundances for interactions inside the detector, and c) a recent revision of the results from the French-Danish C2 experiment on HEA0-3 that were included in our analysis
