Existence theorems in the geometrically non-linear 6-parametric theory of elastic plates
In this paper we show the existence of global minimizers for the
geometrically exact, non-linear equations of elastic plates, in the framework
of the general 6-parametric shell theory. A characteristic feature of this
model for shells is the appearance of two independent kinematic fields: the
translation vector field and the rotation tensor field (representing in total 6
independent scalar kinematic variables). For isotropic plates, we prove the
existence theorem by applying the direct methods of the calculus of variations.
Then, we generalize our existence result to the case of anisotropic plates. We
also present a detailed comparison with a previously established Cosserat plate

Observation of String Breaking in QCD
We numerically investigate the transition of the static quark-antiquark
string into a static-light meson-antimeson system. Improving noise reduction
techniques, we are able to resolve the signature of string breaking dynamics
for n_f=2 lattice QCD at zero temperature. This result can be related to
properties of quarkonium systems. We also study short-distance interactions

O VI Observations of the Onset of Convection Zones in Main-Sequence A Stars
If magnetic activity in outer stellar atmospheres is due to an interplay
between rotation and subsurface convection, as is generally presumed, then one
would not expect to observe indicators of activity in stars with T_eff > 8300
K. Any X-ray or ultraviolet line emission from hotter stars must be due either
to a different mechanism or to an unresolved, active, binary companion. Due to
their poor spatial resolution, X-ray instruments have been especially
susceptible to source confusion. At wavelengths longward of 1216 Angstroms, the
near ultraviolet spectra of stars hotter than this putative dividing line are
dominated by photospheric continuum. We have used FUSE to obtain spectra of the
subcoronal O VI emission lines, which lie at a wavelength where the
photospheric continuum of the mid- and early-A stars is relatively weak. We
observed 14 stars spanning a range in T_eff from 7720 to 10,000 K. Eleven of
the 14 stars showed O VI emission lines, including 6 of the 8 targets with
T_eff > 8300 K. At face value, this suggests that activity does not fall off
with increasing temperature. However, the emission lines are narrower than
expected from the projected rotational velocities of these rapidly-rotating
stars, suggesting that the emission could come from unresolved late-type
companions. Furthermore, the strength of the O VI emission is consistent with
that expected from an unseen active K or M dwarf binary companinon, and the
high x-ray to far uv luminosity ratios observed indicate that this must be the
case. Our results are therefore consistent with earlier studies that have shown
a rapid drop-off in activity at the radiative/convective boundary expected at
T_eff about 8300 K, in agreement with conventional stellar structure models
Rotational elasticity and couplings to linear elasticity
It is the aim of the paper to present a new point of view on rotational
elasticity in a nonlinear setting using orthogonal matrices. The proposed
model, in the linear approximation, can be compared to the well known
equilibrium equations of static linear elasticity. An appropriate kinetic
energy is identified and we present a dynamical model of rotational elasticity.
The propagation of elastic waves in such a medium is studied and we find two
classes of waves, transversal rotational waves and longitudinal rotational
waves, both of which are solutions of the nonlinear partial differential
equations. For certain parameter choices, the transversal wave velocity can be
greater than the longitudinal wave velocity. Moreover, parameter ranges are
identified where the model describes an auxetic material. However, in all cases
the potential energy functional is positive definite. Finally, we couple the
rotational waves to linear elastic waves to study the behaviour of the coupled
system. We find wave like solutions to the coupled equations and can visualise

Epidemiology of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Florida – Part I: A Statewide Report
The increasing incidence ofhepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has become a burgeoning public health problem. The effect has been most notable at liver transplant centers. Traditional reports of liver cancer include many non-HCC variants. This study aims at determining the incidence of HCC in the state of Florida, utilizing data from Florida Cancer Data Systems. This study pertains exclusively to HCC. Of 2,296,794 cancer cases, 4,447 HCC and variants were identified (68.7%). Incidence rates were as follows. The incidence of HCC in the state of Florida was 6.1 cases /100,000 population/year; Male: 9.6/100,000 population/year vs. Female: 2.7; Whites: 6.5/100,000 population/year vs. Blacks: 5.3; Hispanics: 4.6/100,000 population/year vs. Non-Hispanics: 6.5. Limitations of the study included lack of etiology of liver disease, treatments and survival. The classification of tumors and under-reporting in the database are also concerns. The study elaborates on guide- lines for screening and diagnosis ofHCC. The incidence ofHCC in Florida in this study was three times higher than previous reports from 2 decades ago. This is the most updated study reporting the incidence of HCC in Florida, although data was 5 years old. The incidence of this cancer is expected to continue to increase over the next decade. The study is a preamble to so- cioeconomic and county studies currently being performed at this liver transplant center
