Spin dynamics in p-doped semiconductor nanostructures subject to a magnetic field tilted from the Voigt geometry
We develop a theoretical description of the spin dynamics of resident holes
in a p-doped semiconductor quantum well (QW) subject to a magnetic field tilted
from the Voigt geometry. We find the expressions for the signals measured in
time-resolved Faraday rotation (TRFR) and resonant spin amplification (RSA)
experiments and study their behavior for a range of system parameters. We find
that an inversion of the RSA peaks can occur for long hole spin dephasing times
and tilted magnetic fields. We verify the validity of our theoretical findings
by performing a series of TRFR and RSA experiments on a p-modulation doped
GaAs/Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}As single QW and showing that our model can reproduce
experimentally observed signals.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures; corrected typo
Studies of aging and HV break down problems during development and operation of MSGC and GEM detectors for the Inner Tracking System of HERA-B
The results of five years of development of the inner tracking system of the
HERA-B experiment and first experience from the data taking period of the year
2000 are reported. The system contains 184 chambers, covering a sensitive area
of about 20 * 20 cm2 each. The detector is based on microstrip gas counters
(MSGCs) with diamond like coated (DLC) glass wafers and gas electron
multipliers (GEMs). The main problems in the development phase were gas
discharges in intense hadron beams and aging in a high radiation dose
environment. The observation of gas discharges which damage the electrode
structure of the MSGC led to the addition of the GEM as a first amplification
step. Spurious sparking at the GEM cannot be avoided completely. It does not
affect the GEM itself but can produce secondary damage of the MSGC if the
electric field between the GEM and the MSGC is above a threshold depending on
operation conditions. We observed that aging does not only depend on the dose
but also on the spot size of the irradiated area. Ar-DME mixtures had to be
abandoned whereas a mixture of 70% Ar and 30% CO2 showed no serious aging
effects up to about 40 mC/cm deposited charge on the anodes. X-ray measurements
indicate that the DLC of the MSGC is deteriorated by the gas amplification
process. As a consequence, long term gain variations are expected. The Inner
Tracker has successfully participated in the data taking at HERA-B during
summer 2000.Comment: 29 pages, 22 figure

Comparison of contrast enhanced color Doppler targeted biopsy to conventional systematic biology: Impact on Gleason score
Purpose: Prostate cancer grading with Gleason score is an important prognostic factor. This prospective randomized study compares ultrasound systematic biopsy vs contrast enhanced color Doppler targeted biopsy for the impact on Gleason score findings.
Materials and Methods: We examined 690 men (mean age 56 years, range 41 to 77) with a serum total prostate specific antigen of 1.25 ng/ml or greater, a free-to-total prostate specific antigen ratio less than 18% and/or a suspicious digital rectal examination. Contrast enhanced color Doppler targeted biopsies with a limited number of cores (5 or less) were performed in hypervascular areas of the peripheral zone during administration of the ultrasound contrast agent SonovueTM(Bracco, Milano, Italy). Ten systematic biopsies were obtained in a standard spatial distribution. Cancer detection rates and Gleason score were compared.
Results: Prostate cancer was identified in 221 of 690 subjects (32%) with a mean prostate specific antigen of 4.6 ng/ml (range 1.4 to 35.0). Prostate cancer was detected in 180 of 690 subjects (26%) with contrast enhanced color Doppler targeted biopsy and in 166 of 690 patients (24%) with systematic ultrasound biopsy. The Gleason score of all 180 cancers detected on contrast enhanced color Doppler targeted biopsy was 6 or higher (mean 6.8). The Gleason score of all 166 cancers detected on systematic biopsy ranged from 4 to 6 and mean Gleason score was 5.4. Contrast enhanced color Doppler targeted biopsy detected significantly higher Gleason scores compared to systematic biopsy (Wilcoxon rank sum test p \u3c0.003).
Conclusions: Contrast enhanced color Doppler targeted biopsy detected cancers with higher Gleason scores and more cancer than systematic biopsy. Therefore, contrast enhanced color Doppler seems to be helpful in the grading of prostate cancer, which is important for defining prognosis and deciding treatment
Issues and Opportunities in Exotic Hadrons
The last few years have been witness to a proliferation of new results
concerning heavy exotic hadrons. Experimentally, many new signals have been
discovered that could be pointing towards the existence of tetraquarks,
pentaquarks, and other exotic configurations of quarks and gluons.
Theoretically, advances in lattice field theory techniques place us at the cusp
of understanding complex coupled-channel phenomena, modelling grows more
sophisticated, and effective field theories are being applied to an ever
greater range of situations. It is thus an opportune time to evaluate the
status of the field. In the following, a series of high priority experimental
and theoretical issues concerning heavy exotic hadrons is presented.Comment: White paper from INT workshop, "Modern Exotic Hadrons". References

Measurement of the transverse target and beam-target asymmetries in meson photoproduction at MAMI
We present new data for the transverse target asymmetry T and the very first
data for the beam-target asymmetry F in the
reaction up to a center-of-mass energy of W=1.9 GeV. The data were obtained
with the Crystal-Ball/TAPS detector setup at the Glasgow tagged photon facility
of the Mainz Microtron MAMI. All existing model predictions fail to reproduce
the new data indicating a significant impact on our understanding of the
underlying dynamics of meson photoproduction. The peculiar nodal
structure observed in existing T data close to threshold is not confirmed.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in PR
Decoherence-assisted initialization of a resident hole spin polarization in a two-dimensional hole gas
We investigate spin dynamics of resident holes in a p-modulation-doped
GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum well. Time-resolved Faraday and Kerr
rotation, as well as resonant spin amplification, are utilized in our study. We
observe that nonresonant or high power optical pumping leads to a resident hole
spin polarization with opposite sign with respect to the optically oriented
carriers, while low power resonant optical pumping only leads to a resident
hole spin polarization if a sufficient in-plane magnetic field is applied. The
competition between two different processes of spin orientation strongly
modifies the shape of resonant spin amplification traces. Calculations of the
spin dynamics in the electron--hole system are in good agreement with the
experimental Kerr rotation and resonant spin amplification traces and allow us
to determine the hole spin polarization within the sample after optical
orientation, as well as to extract quantitative information about spin
dephasing processes at various stages of the evolution.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures; moderate modifications, one new figur
Measurements of double-polarized compton scattering asymmetries and extraction of the proton spin polarizabilities
The spin polarizabilities of the nucleon describe how the spin of the nucleon responds to an incident polarized photon. The most model-independent way to extract the nucleon spin polarizabilities is through polarized Compton scattering. Double-polarized Compton scattering asymmetries on the proton were measured in the Δ(1232) region using circularly polarized incident photons and a transversely polarized proton target at the Mainz Microtron. Fits to asymmetry data were performed using a dispersion model calculation and a baryon chiral perturbation theory calculation, and a separation of all four proton spin polarizabilities in the multipole basis was achieved. The analysis based on a dispersion model calculation yields γE1E1=−3.5±1.2, γM1M1=3.16±0.85, γE1M2=−0.7±1.2, and γM1E2=1.99±0.29, in units of 10−4 fm4
Search for the Flavor-Changing Neutral Current Decay with the HERA-B Detector
We report on a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decay using events recorded with a dimuon trigger in
interactions of 920 GeV protons with nuclei by the HERA-B experiment. We find
no evidence for such decays and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the
branching fraction .Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures (of which 1 double), paper to be submitted to
