The SAWA corpus: a parallel corpus English-Swahili
Research in data-driven methods for Machine Translation has greatly benefited from the increasing availability of parallel corpora. Processing the same text in two different languages yields useful information on how words and phrases are translated from a source language into a target language. To investigate this, a parallel corpus is typically aligned by linking linguistic tokens in the source language to the corresponding units in the target language. An aligned parallel corpus therefore facilitates the automatic development of a machine translation system and can also bootstrap annotation through projection. In this paper, we describe data collection and annotation efforts and preliminary experimental results with a parallel corpus English- Swahili.
A new method for the spectroscopic identification of stellar non-radial pulsation modes. I. The method and numerical tests
We present the Fourier parameter fit method, a new method for
spectroscopically identifying stellar radial and non-radial pulsation modes
based on the high-resolution time-series spectroscopy of absorption-line
profiles. In contrast to previous methods this one permits a quantification of
the statistical significance of the computed solutions. The application of
genetic algorithms in seeking solutions makes it possible to search through a
large parameter space. The mode identification is carried out by minimizing
chi-square, using the observed amplitude and phase across the line profile and
their modeled counterparts. Computations of the theoretical line profiles are
based on a stellar displacement field, which is described as superposition of
spherical harmonics and that includes the first order effects of the Coriolis
force. We made numerical tests of the method on a grid of different mono- and
multi-mode models for 0 <= l <= 4 in order to explore its capabilities and
limitations. Our results show that whereas the azimuthal order m can be
unambiguously identified for low-order modes, the error of l is in the range of
pm 1. The value of m can be determined with higher precision than with other
spectroscopic mode identification methods. Improved values for the inclination
can be obtained from the analysis of non-axisymmetric pulsation modes. The new
method is ideally suited to intermediatley rotating Delta Scuti and Beta Cephei
stars.Comment: 12 pages, 14 figure

Four cycles of BEP versus an alternating regime of PVB and BEP in patients with poor-prognosis metastatic testicular non-seminoma; a randomised study of the EORTC Genitourinary Tract Cancer Cooperative Group.
We have investigated whether an alternating induction chemotherapy regimen of PVB/BEP is superior to BEP in patients with poor-prognosis testicular non-seminoma. A total of 234 eligible patients were randomised to receive an alternating schedule of PVB/BEP for a total of four cycles or four cycles of BEP. Poor prognosis was defined as any of the following: lymph node metastases larger than 5 cm, lung metastases more than four in number or larger than 2 cm, haematogenic spread outside the lungs, such as in liver and bone, human chorionic gonadotrophin > 10,000 IU l-1 or alphafetoprotein > 1000 IU l-1. The complete response (CR) rates to PVB/BEP and BEP were similar, 76% and 72% respectively (P = 0.58). In addition, there was no significant difference in relapse rate, disease-free and overall survival at an average follow-up of 6 years. The 5-year progression-free and survival rates in both treatment groups were approximately 80%. The PVB/BEP regime was more toxic with regard to bone marrow function; the frequencies of leucocytes below 1000 microliters-1, leucocytopenic fever and platelets below 25,000 microliters-1, throughout four cycles were 28% vs 5% (P < 0.001), 16% vs 5% (P = 0.006), and 10% vs 1% (P = 0.001) respectively. Neuropathy also occurred more often in the PVB/BEP arm: 47% vs 25% (P = 0.001). This study shows that an alternating regimen of PVB/BEP is not superior to BEP and that it is more myelo- and neurotoxic
Real Field Deployment of a Smart Fiber Optic Surveillance System for Pipeline Integrity Threat Detection: Architectural Issues and Blind Field Test Results
This paper presents an on-line augmented surveillance
system that aims to real time monitoring of activities
along a pipeline. The system is deployed in a fully realistic
scenario and exposed to real activities carried out in unknown
places at unknown times within a given test time interval (socalled
blind field tests). We describe the system architecture that
includes specific modules to deal with the fact that continuous
on-line monitoring needs to be carried out, while addressing
the need of limiting the false alarms at reasonable rates. To
the best or our knowledge, this is the first published work in
which a pipeline integrity threat detection system is deployed
in a realistic scenario (using a fiber optic along an active gas
pipeline) and is thoroughly and objectively evaluated in realistic
blind conditions. The system integrates two operation modes:
The machine+activity identification mode identifies the machine
that is carrying out a certain activity along the pipeline, and the
threat detection mode directly identifies if the activity along the
pipeline is a threat or not. The blind field tests are carried out
in two different pipeline sections: The first section corresponds
to the case where the sensor is close to the sensed area, while
the second one places the sensed area about 35 km far from
the sensor. Results of the machine+activity identification mode
showed an average machine+activity classification rate of 46:6%.
For the threat detection mode, 8 out of 10 threats were correctly
detected, with only 1 false alarm appearing in a 55:5-hour sensed
period.European CommissionMinisterio de EconomĂa y CompetitividadComunidad de Madri
Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis 10 years post bone marrow transplantation: a case report
Abstract Introduction Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in bone marrow transplant recipients. Establishing the diagnosis remains a challenge for clinicians working in acute care setting. However, prompt diagnosis and treatment can lead to favourable outcomes Case presentation We report a case of invasive aspergillosis occurring in a 39-year-old Caucasian female 10 years after an allogeneic haematopoietic bone marrow transplant, and 5 years after stopping all immunosuppression. Possible risk factors include bronchiolitis obliterans and exposure to building dust (for example, handling her husband's dusty overalls). There are no similar case reports in the literature at this time. Conclusion High clinical suspicion, especially in the setting of failure to respond to broad-spectrum antibiotics, should alert clinicians to the possibility of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis, which, in this case, responded to antifungal therapy.</p
Next Generation Sequencing to Determine the Cystic Fibrosis Mutation Spectrum in Palestinian Population
An extensive molecular analysis of the CF transmembrane regulator (CFTR) gene was performed to establish the CFTR mutation spectrum and frequencies in the Palestinian population, which can be considered as an understudied population. We used a targeted Next Generation Sequencing approach to sequence the entire coding region and the adjacent sequences of the CFTR gene combined with MLPA analysis of 60 unrelated CF patients. Eighteen different CF-causing mutations, including one previously undescribed mutation p.(Gly1265Arg), were identified. The overall detection rate is up to 67%, and when we consider only CF patients with sweat chloride concentrations >70 mEq/L, we even have a pickup rate of 92%. Whereas p.(Phe508del) is the most frequent allele (35% of the positive cases), 3 other mutations c.2988+1Kbdel8.6Kb, c.1393-1G>A, and p.(Gly85Glu) showed frequencies higher than 5% and a total of 9 mutations account for 84% of the mutations. This limited spectrum of CF mutations is in agreement with the homozygous ethnic origin of the Palestinian population. The relative large portion of patients without a mutation is most likely due to clinical misdiagnosis. Our results will be important in the development of an adequate molecular diagnostic test for CF in Palestine
